May 16, 2007i am likely going to reformat my computer due to a severe virus (see my other post). my brother told me to find the reboot disc before i reformat it, but i cant find the disc! do i even need this disc? i'm not even sure if my computer came with one

Oct 28, 2009Let me thank anyone checking this out in advance for your assistance. It's truly appreciated. Here is the situation, I will try to be as detailed as possible. I have a laptop I am trying to re-install Windows XP on. I am not worried about backing up any of the data. The machine seems to be have been infected with a nasty virus that is keeping me from being able to reformat. The virus has locked the system registry as well as the task manager. It also seemingly has disabled the CD-Rom.My first move was to go into Command Prompt and go with "format c:" when I do that it tells me the file system is RAW. I was able to find a find for this and have tried "format C: /fs:ntfs".
The system then tells me that format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. It attempts to dismount the volume by forcing a dismount and fails. It tells me it cannot lock the drive and the volume is still in use. I also tried switching the BIOS order so that the system boots from CD-Rom with both a XP install cd and a Vista install DVD with no luck. The Vista DVD fails to load and the XP leads to a blank blinking prompt. Again, I don't need anything on the computer, is there any way I can whipe this machine clean and re-install windows? Reformatting Hard Drive After Virus Attack?
Jun 14, 2005I'm running XP with a downloaded, update SP2. I got a virus around Christmas and now want to reformat the drive and XP won't let me.It says I cannot dismount the drive to start the process.Something is using it?I just want to learn from my mistakes and start over. Also can I install XP from the discs from my other machine to this one? I do not have a copy of the original OS disc.

On Tuesday, I turned on my computer like usual and I noticed that my monitor was not normal. I could not see anything on my desktop. It was black. And also, the power button was blinking green every 3 seconds and would not stop, until I actually removed the plug from the surge protector. Yesterday the same thing happened when I turned on my computer, but today, when I turned it on, I could see my desktop and the power button was normal green and not blinking. I was happy, until I moved the mouse and the cursor was frozen. Now, it seems like my desktop monitor is fine, but my mouse isn't normal? I unplugged the mouse from the tower and plugged it back in, cleaned out the mouse, and it's still frozen.

Jan 31, 2005I restarted my computer in safe mode to see if it would get a program to work. Not only did it not work, it seems to have severely crippled my system.The first thing I noticed (after restoring to normal boot mode) was that my GUI was very simplified not what it usually is for Windows XP. A simple example is that the minimize maximize close buttons look like the Windows 98 version rather than Windows XP. Also, more advertisements were popping up than I was used to which quickly led me to discover that my Norton Personal Firewall and System Works were disabled. When I tried to open them manually, I was greeted instead with an error message which instructed me to reinstall Norton. Though I knew it wouldn't help, I tried to uninstall Norton System Works but the uninstall program didn't execute properly. I then used Symantec's website instructions for uninstalling Norton manually. When I tried to reinstall it, another error message popped up and I have since been unable to install it.Various system utilites are disabled. Device manager displays no devices. None. I attempted to use system restore to restore it to an earlier date. It instructed me to click on a date in bold but the only date in bold was from two minutes after I had destroyed my computer. I restored to that point just for the heck of it with predictable (no) results. Also, my computer doesn't detect a sound card so I can't even listen to music while I fix my computer. I'm still not sure of the full extent of the problem.The internet is working decently (how else would I be posting this?) but certain sites aren't working. The obvious notable one is the Windows Update site. Also, when I tried to update HijackThis to post my log (I'll post it on request) I got the now familiar, "Cannot connect to server," error. Even programs like AIM don't connect properly and I'm currently using an old version-- not even the newest one-- of AIM Express to chat.

Oct 16, 2006My mom brought me her e-machines computer today with the complaint that Windows won't load.I think it might have a virus.So I hook it up and turn it on and am greeted with the loading screen before it brings up a windows error screen prompt that looks like a DOS screen.It says how there might have been a power failure or a virus or God knows what, but it gives you three options for proceeding.1) Safe Mode.2) Start with the last known good configuration.3) Start Windows Normally.I tried starting with all three options and it starts to do each one and then restarts and takes me right back to the loading screen before presenting me with the same DOS-looking screen again and the same endless three options.
