Laptop Keeps Needing Reinstall Every 1 2 Days
Aug 23, 2009
1. Within hours or days of installing XP I get blue screen of death even though I formatted C drive. I try to repair it with boot CD but it NEVER finds a previous version of windows to repair. So I try stuff in recovery console such as replacing my ntfs file (was told to do this by someone) but that doesn't help. Then I attempted to chkdsk but 30 minutes later it's only at 20%. May as well just reinstall!
2. My laptop often just cuts the power. I think this is due to overheating but to be honest when it cuts sometimes it's hot and sometimes it is not. I have ordered a cooling mat and in the meantime I have a big office fan blasting it on full power, seems to help. I'm also considering buying compressed air can.................

I recently purchased a HP Laptop, model DV7-1020US. Here are a few specifications.
Processor
# Processor Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 / 2 GHz
# Multi-Core processor technology Dual-Core
# 64-bit processor Yes
# Data bus speed 1066 MHz
#
Cache Memory
# Type L2 cache
# Cache size 3 MB.........
So, unhappy with the amount of processes from HP and also vista taking up the laptop's performance, I decided to re-install Windows Xp 64 Bit OS. The first thing I do is pop in the install CD, which takes me to the "WIndows setup starting.. etc, and says loading drivers, etc, and as soon as it gets to "Windows setup is starting up.. (the one after it loads the neccessary files) I immediately bluescreen with this message : A problem has been detected.......

reinstalling win 2000 on a laptop. In the past when I have needed to wipe an installation, I have just pulled the drive and put it into another of my machines to clean the hard drive to start all over and proceed that way. That being said, I have never done one with a laptop. I have a laptop that an aunt asked me to wipe. She does not remember the login password.

I didn't use the laptop for about 3-4 months and when I powered it on and it would not boot into Windows. It would get to the Windows 2000 start up screen and just stop responding after the status bar reach about 3/4 way. I tried booting into last known good config with no success and tried booting into Safe Mode with no success so finally I just decided to re-install windows from scratch. I was able to boot from CD and re-format the drive but now I get the blue screen of death after getting about 3/4 of the way through install stating something about a possible hardware change. There have been no changes to the hardware and I have tried several times with the same results.

I have a Gateway laptop which has XP loaded on it. One day the laptop just decided to not turn on anymore. I turn it on, see the Gateway Screen with it's options, then it goes to a black screen. I have my startup disk and i'm FULLY prepared to reinstall windows and erase everything on my computer, but when I get to that screen to do so (choosing destructive reformat or whatever) it starts, but then never finishes. I gave it to my tech people at the college, but they're seemingly incompetent, so I've come to you guys looking for an answer.

I have recently deleted my XP partition and attempted reinstalling XP due to degrading performance. Yes I took that way out. While installing, or often before, the power randomly cuts off with no warning at random places. Last time I did this I just had to keep trying all night until one time it worked long enough to install.

I'm trying to reinstall XP on my Sony Vaio laptop after having to replace the hard drive. It won't boot from the CD - it just tells me that the operating system is not found. I had that much figured out. I'm no computer whiz, but it looks to me like the drive IS recognized in the BIOS. I even loaded the XP onto a flash drive and tried to boot from that.

I decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??

I want to reinstall Windows XP on our Toshiba laptop but I don't want to reinstall from the Toshiba disks due to the bloatware that the disks installs (like the disk utility, antivirus, etc software). I'd like to install the OS from a Microsoft Windows XP CD but wondered if the Microsoft disk would even install onto the Toshiba and if so, would the laptop function properly? Thanks.

i've scanned my computer with every single anti-virus and spyware program i could find yet nothing will fix the problem Sometimes when i reboot it will start loading normally but when it gets to the windows XP logo the loading bar is going like it's supposed to...then after a few seconds it completely stops...then shortly after a blue screen flashes and my computer restarts....and when this starts happening the only way to fix it is to do a system restore to the date i first installed windows xp to it....even if the problem started happening a week after i restore...it won't work if i restore it to a couple days before...ONLY the day i first installed windows.....i have to keep going into safe mode and restore....then it will begin working again....but no matter what it always ends up doing it again...and i'm getting sick of constantly losing programs i install then having to reinstall every single one of them.

I have been having the slow downs hard core. Defrag has been going for 24+ hours and its only at 9%. Folders take 5 seconds to load and the icon pictures within the folders take about 10 seconds to appear. Games run fine and programs do to once they load, but its almost like the computer has a 5 second hicup every 10 seconds and freezes. I have ran registry fixer, spy bot, avg, I have ran tests on all my components with a program called cpu tester (r something like that). I was grabbing wi-fi spots within my neiborhood to get internet with a wireless usb adapter. Funny thing is this is when all the problems starting happening or at least getting worse after a couple weeks of installing the Belkin software for the usb adapter. For the past week I can't get a signal I usually could always get. I guess my question is should I just wipe the drives and start fresh? or should I try something else?

My Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

I've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.I hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive. My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

A possible client of mine has a system with three hard drives. He was not able to install the updates from Windows Update, so somehow, he installed the OS again on another hard drive and booted up with it (not sure how he did that), and it asked him to authenticate the software by buying a new key (the OS was already installed with the same disk and key on the C drive). When he rebooted, it booted from the orginal hard drive (drive C) and original installation of the OS, which was unable to install the Windows Updates. Basically, the OS on the C drive either needs to be repaired, or it needs to be reinstalled. And the drive that has the second instance of the OS needs to be wiped out and formatted.
The question is, if the repair does not fix it and the OS needs to be reinstalled, if the second instance of the OS is wiped out, will it still ask him to buy another key? My guess is no, since he will be reinstalling it, but I'm not sure if the second install triggered it so that any future installs, whether they are on the original system or not, will be asked to be authenticated.

I have a friend with an IE problem which I think may be corrected by reinstalling IE 6 but if she deinstalls it and has no browser how would she go about reinstalling it ? Can she still use her windows updates without a browser ? or will she have to do it from her XP cd? I do believe they will probably have a recovery cd because I think they bought a branded ( yuck) computer.

Alright, so I acquired a computer to use as my HTPC; the only issue is that it is an HP computer that has an OEM copy of XP Home installed, and it is full of crap and has so many corrupt files it makes my head hurt to simply think about. A fresh install is necessary, but I can't do it because I don't have the recovery cd. It has the product key plain as day on the side, so I only need the software to run it. I can get this via torrents, I'm sure, but the only one I've found so far is an OEM copy with SP3. I think the computer is about 5 years old, and I'm pretty sure only SP 1 was around at that time. Did Windows use the same algorithm for SP1-SP3? I.E. will my cd key work with this OEM SP3 cd? I don't want to uninstall everything and then be left with absolutely no OS.
