A drop down window recently appeared stating that my computer was low on virtual memory and windows was going to increase it. I have never seen this message before. After conducting some research the site said the virtual memory should be at least 100MB. My computer shows the minimum at 384 and the maximum at 768. I don't know how much Windows increased the memory but should it be changed higher than 384?

I am trying to increase my virtual memory and am doing so the way I am
supposed to by running "control sysdm.cpl" and going to the appropriate steps
and then restarting my computer. What is happening, though, is when I go back
to it my settings are saved in the "custom sized" places as the new values I
put in, but the "currently allocated" amount doesn't change at all. Shouldn't
the currently allocated amount change to the minimum I designate in the
custom allocation box?Right now, the only way to get my graphics program to work faster is by overloading my memory so that Windows will automatically increase the virtual memory. Why don't my custom settings change anything?

My OS is Windowns XP. Lately while on-line, I have been getting a "virtual memory is low" error message and then my computer either locks up or I am booted off AOL. Can you tell me what might cause this type error? I have noted added any new software in weeks. The last install was my IPOD Nano.

I've set up a 2 GB logical drive in my extended partition which I have dedicated to the Windows virtual memory swap file ("pagefile.sys"). I went into the "Performance Options" panel, clicked "Change. " within the "Virtual Memory" section, then set the size of the swap file for the logical drive. I then tried to set the size of the swap file on drive C: to zero.

I keep getting the error message that my Windows virtual memory minimum is too low. I have Microsoft Windows 2000 and the following settings: total paging file size 205 MB; minimum 2 MB; Recommended 190 MB; Currently allocated 205 MB; current registry size 21 I'm not the system administrator so I can't change these numbers. I also couldn't find the pagefile.sys that someone suggested looking for. My IT guys don't know what's wrong; they reformatted my computer but I got this error message again. What should I tell them to do?

Looking for some assistance please with the virtual memory settings on my laptop. I'm continually getting 'low virtual memory' messages which either result in th explorer page shutting down or with applicatons being unable to run (including games). I've tried adjusting the settings under 'system properties' but when I re-boot and re-check this it always reverts to zero. I'm following the correct procss in hitting 'apply', etc but this problem continues to appear. There is also a 'paging' error where apparently there's a problem with the paging file configuration when i start the computer.

I get a message telling me my virtual memory is too low. This usually happens when I run an anti spy/ad programme. This happened once after I ran an AVG anti spy system scan and twice when I ran a panda scan. Is this a genuine message or a fake from a virus/spywear?

I run Windows XP professional sp2 on a P4 2.4GHz/512DDR/845MotherBoard/300GB 7400rpm HDD. I have noticed that if I keep my system running at night, which is when I generally download stuff from rapidshare and some torrents, it shows some kind of low virtual memory message when I have a look at it in the morning. Why is it happening? The applications that keep running throughout night are firefox, uTorrent, McAfee Security Center, and my DSL connection tool.

I booted up my computer and left it running for a while I noticed I got a Low virtual memory warning. So I opened up task manger and saw the my PF usage was extremely high (around 1.5 GB) and I didn't have anything open or running. Then I restarted it and had the same problem later. After a while some times it will render the computer useless as I can't get anything to run as its so slow. Even as I'm typing this message my PF usage is slowly increasing. I also notice that my "Handles" are slowly increasing too. All that I've done to the computer recently is install a Dynex Wireless G USB adapter. I dont think it's the cause of the problem because when I take the USB adpater out the computer and leave it running.

I was replying to an e-mail when a message something like 'Virtual memory exceeded, microsoft can fix this' came up. I believe I selected a 'go ahead' button and left it to fix the problem. When I came back sometime later the computer was not reacting to anything so I reset. The screen that shows my hardware etc came up and windows then started, however, when the start up appeared to have progressed to the stage where the screen goes blank and an arrow eventually appears it didn't! It went back to the screen that shows the hardware build and kept cycling in that mode.

I'm just wondering whether this is a healthy maneuver, I have 1 hard drive in my computer, I want to install a fresh copy of XP, naturally I want a separate partition for the windows paging file so to avoid fragmentation of it (and no I don't care about lack of stop error message dumps) but I'd also like to maximize the speed of access so I thought I'd put the Paging partition at the front (outer rim) of the disk and the boot partition a gig and a half in (That's before the boot cut off), then just have a storage partition after that. I've already set up a computer this way, it seems okay and runs like a dream. But I have an inkling it actually isn't a good idea, mostly cause I've always just dumped the Boot/System partition at the start of the disk. Is this a really silly thing to do, if so why?

To silverduck441: The Paging File is Windows virtual RAM, and generally it is about 1.5 times the total RAM. Go to Contol Panel/System on the Advanced page, go to Perfomance and then Settings. Select "For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory". If you get this problem often, the answer may be to increase the settings in the virtual RAM settings manually and/or buy more RAM

I've got Windows XP home and two external hard drives (connected via USB) and I'm trying to give one or both of those drives paging files. My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?

I re-installed one of my games that I used to play a year back and it tells me that I need 12MB of video memory for it to work. I had played this game on the same PC before one year ago, so I do not know why it is telling my PC now that it doesn't have sufficient video memory. Everything was running smoothly when I played the game a year ago.Has it got anything to do with the increasing number of files I downloaded or some of the programs I have installed over the year? How do I check how much video memory I am currently using? More importantly, how do I physically increase video memory?

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:
Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.
When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?
