i have an upgraded comp from windows 98 2nd edition to windows xp. i frequently get messages telling me my virtual memory paging file size is too low causing progs to disappear. i have tried help&support pages at microsoft but i dont know what size my min or max page file size should be.the ram on my comp is 192mb.

I have started getting na error message about the virtual memory on my laptop being low and needing to increase the paging file. I have increased the size of it but I am still getting it. The laptop is only 3 months old, and the usage has not changed in any way whatsoever, i done a full cleanup a few weeks ago and all was running smooth.It was only appear the last 3 days for some reason and its really really bugging me as the entire laptop slows down and has to be rebooted the whole time.

Go to Contol Panel/System on the Advanced page, go to Perfomance and then Settings. Select "For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory". If you get this problem often, the answer may be to increase the settings in the virtual RAM settings manually and/or buy more RAM

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently, as the available free space on my 60 gigs hard drive dropped to 3 gigs, I started getting an error message at bootup that said that the virtual memory page was too low or zero along with intructions on how to change it in the Control Panel.I have since changed hard drives, installing a 100 gig drive in my HP Pavillion laptop. I have changed the virtual memory setting in the control planel from "Let Windows Manage Memory" to setting actual limits. It is currently set to 2048 megs. Nothing I do will eliminate the error message at bootup. While the responsiveness of the computer was very slow when I had the nearly full drive, it seems to have returned to normal with the new, large hard drive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm just wondering whether this is a healthy maneuver, I have 1 hard drive in my computer, I want to install a fresh copy of XP, naturally I want a separate partition for the windows paging file so to avoid fragmentation of it (and no I don't care about lack of stop error message dumps) but I'd also like to maximize the speed of access so I thought I'd put the Paging partition at the front (outer rim) of the disk and the boot partition a gig and a half in (That's before the boot cut off), then just have a storage partition after that. I've already set up a computer this way, it seems okay and runs like a dream. But I have an inkling it actually isn't a good idea, mostly cause I've always just dumped the Boot/System partition at the start of the disk. Is this a really silly thing to do, if so why?

Have over 6 Gig space after a reboot, 0 bytes after about 24 - 36 hours, then back to 6 Gig after a reboot. Checked the windows page file and that's not at 6 gig when my HD is full.Virus scan and usual spyware cleaners come up clean.

My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.
When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?
I don't really have a problem on my hands, but I would like to ask a few questions relating to Virtual Memory and Memory Leak.
I downloaded a game back in December, but hasn't been installed as yet. I heard that it is created using "C++" or "C" (whatever it is), and I learned that it has a memory leak. My Virtual Memory was running low (it may already have beforehand) by the time the game was installed. My computer crashed two days later as a result.
But some users haven't experienced any problems with the game. My question is, is it a better idea for me to install the game on a CD-ROM or USB Drive and play it from that media type (instead of from the hard drive) so that I can protect my PC from crashing due to low virtual memory?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trialing drive encryption (TrueCrypt) and have created an encrypted D drive. I set my paging file to exist on the D drive so it is also encrypted and therefore safe and done the same with the temp directories.The problem is the screen goes all funny at boot time (splits into 4 sqiggly screens) and then comes up. It was unable to create the pagefile as there is not yet a d drive.
You have to use truecrypt to make the d drive by putting in the password, which makes sense since that's what keeps the data safe.The temp directories are used after the d drive becomes available but the pagefile.sys is not created or used that I can tell. This is a problem because either it means I have to keep the pagefile on the unencrypted C drive which is a security risk or I have to do without a pagefile entirely.
I have a laptop, and a file named 1.tmp has appeared (how or why I do not know) in my c/windows/system32 folder that throws up an error message window saying it cannot find the program to run the tmp file, and that appears on my screen every time I log on.So; I thought I could simply go into the sys32 folder and delete the 1.tmp file by putting it in the trash can, as it obviously does not belong there.BUT it will not let me, if I try I get an error message telling me I do not have access or the disc is full even when I use the administrator level so now I am completely at a loss and I do not understand.
View 8 Replies View Relateda program called "System Guard 2008" has installed itself. It slowed down quite a bit and eventually crashed on me. Now it wont boot up all the way. I turn it on, it will get all the way to the Windows password screen, then once I enter my password and click on the green arrow, I get a warning message that my paginf file is either non existant or too small. Then once I click "OK" on that warning message, the screen blacks out, restarts the boot process, gets to the password screen, and that cycle just continues over and over. Ive tried to boot into safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having problem of virtual memory on this laptop,when I boot my laptop,it takes a long time to get to the desktop screen and then an error messege appears saying something like "The system is too low on virtual memory and need to increase the size of virtual memory".I do understand something about virtual memory usage I have checked the Peformance tab in Task Manager and the paging file usage is 960MB.Under Physical Memory(K),it says available memory is 35888 or something less then that. The CPU usage goes down and than shoots up to 60% or sometimes even higher. Could it be an over heating issue?Please note that the base of my laptop gets really hot.I have even checked the virtual memory performance in System Properties and the paging file is happening at Drive C:I wanted to know that should I change the setings of virtual memory?Should the remaining partitions like D: and E: be assigned paging file instead of C drive?
