Virtual Memory Error : Needing To Increase The Paging File
Jun 2, 2006I have started getting na error message about the virtual memory on my laptop being low and needing to increase the paging file. I have increased the size of it but I am still getting it. The laptop is only 3 months old, and the usage has not changed in any way whatsoever, i done a full cleanup a few weeks ago and all was running smooth.It was only appear the last 3 days for some reason and its really really bugging me as the entire laptop slows down and has to be rebooted the whole time.

Mar 14, 2006To silverduck441: The Paging File is Windows virtual RAM, and generally it is about 1.5 times the total RAM. Go to Contol Panel/System on the Advanced page, go to Perfomance and then Settings. Select "For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory". If you get this problem often, the answer may be to increase the settings in the virtual RAM settings manually and/or buy more RAM

Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. How can I expand C: drive? I have partition magic installed on my PC.

Oct 19, 2005Last night I reformatted my laptop with my XP disk. it was just that time to clean out the hard drive something that I've done many times. But some weird things happened.1- It never asked me to type in my XP Key 2- when it finally installed some things seemed to be overlooked. Like the drivers. When windows restarted and came up normally the screen was set to 640x480 at 16 bit and wont let me make it larger. I went into the adv tab to see if i could update the driver but the properties button under the monitor type was grayed out. This along with other hardwares on my computer never installed. I tried the recovery cd after that to install the drivers but nothing helped. It seems like the plug-play never was activated.

Jan 11, 2005I'm just wondering whether this is a healthy maneuver, I have 1 hard drive in my computer, I want to install a fresh copy of XP, naturally I want a separate partition for the windows paging file so to avoid fragmentation of it (and no I don't care about lack of stop error message dumps) but I'd also like to maximize the speed of access so I thought I'd put the Paging partition at the front (outer rim) of the disk and the boot partition a gig and a half in (That's before the boot cut off), then just have a storage partition after that. I've already set up a computer this way, it seems okay and runs like a dream. But I have an inkling it actually isn't a good idea, mostly cause I've always just dumped the Boot/System partition at the start of the disk. Is this a really silly thing to do, if so why?

Increase Virtual Memory?
Dec 12, 2006A drop down window recently appeared stating that my computer was low on virtual memory and windows was going to increase it. I have never seen this message before. After conducting some research the site said the virtual memory should be at least 100MB. My computer shows the minimum at 384 and the maximum at 768. I don't know how much Windows increased the memory but should it be changed higher than 384?

My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. Jan 9, 2007I am trialing drive encryption (TrueCrypt) and have created an encrypted D drive. I set my paging file to exist on the D drive so it is also encrypted and therefore safe and done the same with the temp directories.The problem is the screen goes all funny at boot time (splits into 4 sqiggly screens) and then comes up. It was unable to create the pagefile as there is not yet a d drive.
You have to use truecrypt to make the d drive by putting in the password, which makes sense since that's what keeps the data safe.The temp directories are used after the d drive becomes available but the pagefile.sys is not created or used that I can tell. This is a problem because either it means I have to keep the pagefile on the unencrypted C drive which is a security risk or I have to do without a pagefile entirely.
