View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problems with win98 are a thing of the past.I still have to install all of the previous programs.Just got WinXP installed with AMD Athlon XP 1800+ and 512 Mb RAM.I am gonna do read the walk through, the help section but is there anything i need to do first. The XP firewall is on so does this means that i no longer need Zone Alarm? However, there is no Antivirus. I previously used Norton.I figure I'd download another free Norton version later. XP had some recommendations but which should i choose?http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/viruses/wsc/en-us/default.mspx.There's a free 1 year trial with Computer Associates but I'm not familiar with them.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just got the trial version of XP x64. I have a 64-bit processor and TuneUp utilities recommends I upgrade to x64. I have a couple of concerns, though. First, just because I have a 64-bit processor does not necessarily mean I have 64-bit drivers and 64-bit compatible programs, does it? Second, if I install the trial version and the trial ends; what then? Will I just go back to XP Pro or will I have sold my soul and be forced to purchase the full version?

I try to repair it with boot CD but it NEVER finds a previous version of windows to repair. So I try stuff in recovery console such as replacing my ntfs file (was told to do this by someone) but that doesn't help. Then I attempted to chkdsk but 30 minutes later it's only at 20%. May as well just reinstall!
2. My laptop often just cuts the power. I think this is due to overheating but to be honest when it cuts sometimes it's hot and sometimes it is not. I have ordered a cooling mat and in the meantime I have a big office fan blasting it on full power, seems to help. I'm also considering buying compressed air can.................
i've scanned my computer with every single anti-virus and spyware program i could find yet nothing will fix the problem Sometimes when i reboot it will start loading normally but when it gets to the windows XP logo the loading bar is going like it's supposed to...then after a few seconds it completely stops...then shortly after a blue screen flashes and my computer restarts....and when this starts happening the only way to fix it is to do a system restore to the date i first installed windows xp to it....even if the problem started happening a week after i restore...it won't work if i restore it to a couple days before...ONLY the day i first installed windows.....i have to keep going into safe mode and restore....then it will begin working again....but no matter what it always ends up doing it again...and i'm getting sick of constantly losing programs i install then having to reinstall every single one of them.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been having the slow downs hard core. Defrag has been going for 24+ hours and its only at 9%. Folders take 5 seconds to load and the icon pictures within the folders take about 10 seconds to appear. Games run fine and programs do to once they load, but its almost like the computer has a 5 second hicup every 10 seconds and freezes. I have ran registry fixer, spy bot, avg, I have ran tests on all my components with a program called cpu tester (r something like that). I was grabbing wi-fi spots within my neiborhood to get internet with a wireless usb adapter. Funny thing is this is when all the problems starting happening or at least getting worse after a couple weeks of installing the Belkin software for the usb adapter. For the past week I can't get a signal I usually could always get. I guess my question is should I just wipe the drives and start fresh? or should I try something else?

I have enjoyed the much faster OS, and have grown to have many files, of many variety and size, and DO NOT WANT TO LOSE EVERYTHING by reinstalling windows.I was wondering if anybody, had any suggestions as to how I could extend the trial or reuse the trial while retaining all of my precious information? Are there any loop holes? Should I get a free linux distribution? Should I buy some whiskey and a gun? What would you reccommend? (PS- Currently I can only have my computer on for 2 hours, after 1 hour of usage, a window pops up saying 'your windows has expired, you have 16 days left to restore access to this installation of Windows, your computer will restart in 1 hour.
