i keep getting no desk space messages, even tho i deleted so many files and i kno for a fact the space is free, i tried disk clean up, and it goes as far as MB, disk defragmenter tells me that i need over 15% space
im using windows xp, there is only one drive, which is C:i have 74.52 GB capacity,
Files on one of my storage drives have disappeared. It is not a hidden file problem. The properties says that there is the same amount of occupied space as before the files disappeared but I can't see them. Anyone know how to fix this? running win xp pro. storage drive is a maxtor 500 gig scsi internal. I think windows may have run check disk at a boot up
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having some issues with my Free Space on my C: partition. The C partition has 40GB of space. When I add Program files, Windows, Documents and Settings, it shows that I use around 6GB of space. With nothing in Temp and Recycle Bin, I should have 34 GB of free space. However, I have only 5.5 GB. Does anyone know where my 34 GB of free space may have disappeared? I tried defragmenting my C partition but it couldn't defragment all files. Here is the report. It doesn't tell me much. You may be able to "read" it.
View 19 Replies View RelatedToday I deleted some files totaling about 4 gigs in size (also emptying the recycling bin) and it did not free up any space on my hard drive (NTFS, SATA, 320GB, 16MB Cache, 7200 RPM, Western Digital WD3200KS). It reported the same free space as before I had deleted the files. When I select all the files and hit properties the size on disk is reported as 272 GB (292,118,638,592 bytes), but when I go to properties on the disk itself it reports used space as 276 GB (297,209,229,312 bytes). I was wondering if anyone knew a way to "reclaim" this space (I don't know if windows just didn't mark the space as free or what). This has happened to other drives of mine, reformatting fixes them

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I look with the Explore facility the size of all my directories in C: I found roughly 8.3 GB, When I look at the used space with Property on C: I found 26.2 GB or 3 times more ! The remaining free space si 1.5 GB.I cannot understand why.I have deleted all the temp files, try to delete the maximum unnecessary

First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

If so, is there any way of removing the deleted "Recycle Bin" items without affecting anything else on the Hard Disk? My original and now #2 computer has a very small Hard Disk (15 GB). I have cleaned out everything but the OS and installed programs. I would like to remove the one GB of My Documents files I put into the Recycle Bin and then further deleted from there, if indeed they are still resident on the Hard Disk. My intent is to hopefully increase performance of that machine, which also has a very slow processor and only 190 MB RAM. Right now the OS and programs occupy one-half of the Hard Disk. I am running "XP Home" on that computer. I will only use C #2 for reaching the Internet should my #1 computer "go down. (I would be lost without that daily exercise!) C #1 is fully backed up weekly to an external Hard Disk.

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?

When i turned the PC back on again i had lost all the files, pictures, internet history and word documents off my user side of the PC, i checked the other user area and the the files and folders are still intact. The thing that is puzzling me is the fact whenever i save a file/picture/document to my desktop and subsequently turn off the pc after use. It seems to automatically delete the file/picture/document off my desktop and is no were to be found on countless searches i've done on all my harddrives.

Files which are being deleted are flashed so quickly that I can't determine what they are. Afterwards there is some corruption, the extent of which I haven't determined, except that my Connection Settings for MSN9 Dial-up are clobbered, and I can't get online. I've been successfully recovering from this situation by doing a System Restore, which has been working well for the past two months, but I need to determine what can be done to resolve the problem.

And when I go to recycle bin properties c: drive is just not there. I can see my d: and g: drive but the c: drive is just not there. Does anybody know what the problem might be, and how to fix it?

I have fixed the problem temporarily by renaming the c: Recycle folder and then letting Windows create a new bin, then deleting the renamed folder. This lasts for a day or two then the problem returns. I'm looking for a more permanent fix short of reformatting.

I think one of my kids may have delete some criticle files.i found a bunch of family jpegs and 2 cab files in the recycle bin. I restored all the files but have been having slow performance. I am unable to send large emails without getting memory errors if i try to access Device Manager i get the following error:MMC cannot open the file c:windowssystem32devmgmnt.msc. This may because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. I have adminstrator rights and have tried logging in as another admiinistrator. I've reinstalled SP2 but that didn't help. Short of reinstalling XP (which would be a PITA)

When I try and empty Deleted file I get an error message saying they can not be deleted and there may be some damaged section on the main drive. It then says I should run Scan Disk or similar.
There is no ScanDisk but I went control Panel, c drive, properties and ran Ckdisk.
It takes a while to run and I have done it several times, as well as Disk Cleanup

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently deleted a folder that i wasn't supposed to delete inside my EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Inside that folder were 2 other very important sub folders. It was over 8 gigs so when i deleted it, i unfortunately commited the same mistake of pressing the "yes" button again when it asked the files to bypass the recycling bin being permanently deleted from the computer. In fact it happened so fast it seemed like it vaporized. It was hard to believe that over 8 gigs of files were eliminated that fast, whereas usually any big file i would delete would normally take a while for the computer to process
