System Restore To Save Space - Backup System Files

Aug 12, 2002

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

I've removed all of the unnecessary programs that I don't need or use or at least the one's that have an uninstall program or if I'm able to remove them from the control panel. System Displays Many Fragmented Files

Jan 21, 2008

I have noticed on several occasions that when my system displays many fragmented files and I'm waiting for the message stating that I should defrag, it appears that the system defrags on it's own!? All the red is gone and everything is blue. Does keeping the browser cache clean and deleting all but the most recent restore points have any bearing on this issue?

Losing My Free Space - Fragmented The C Disk

Aug 8, 2008

I have an old laptop with only 4GB of memory between the two disks. The last time I fragmented the C disk, last week, it had 15% of space or about 700MB. Suddenly the next day it jumped to under 200MB. It did that the month before, as well. I have known for some time I have to get another hard disk, but I am trying to hang in there a little longer. I have taken off everything I can think off and have moved everything to the other drive. When it is so low, I can't even System Restore

Large File Downloading / Taking Long Time

Jul 31, 2005

I recently purchased Visual Studio 6.0 and want to download a 132MB file with samples of the several venues comprising the Studio. Yesterday, I spent 15 hours at my machine trying to download this large file (56k Modem) and at 131+MB, my connection to my ISP broke and I lost it. I have tried several times before and after this crushing loss and have had similar problems.

Is there any software or other means to "restart" when a downloading process has been broken off and continue the download? That seems possible, say, when downloading Microsoft service packs and upgrades.but can I do it too?

System Restore Problem - Space On My Hardrive

Mar 26, 2005

I just restored my xp computer to an earlier system restore point. After checking the properties of my c drive I found that the used space on my hardrive had increased by about 3/4 of a gigabyte. I couldn't understand why that was, so I used a program called dirgraph to analyze, and chart what amount of space the individual directories each use on my c drive, and then took a snapshot of the chart.
I then undid my restore, and instead of regaining the .75gb back, I lost another .75gb. So I used dirgraph again, compared snapshots, and found where the extra space is being taken from. Dirgraph shows a subdirectory of c called "System Volume Information". It has a subdirectory called "restore". In it was another subdirectory with a large 5gb file, and 2 smaller .75gb files, named rp1064, and rp1066. One of the .75gb files was not in the snapshot I took before I undid my restore. I know the system restore put them in(it added the 1st when I did the restore, and the 2nd when I undid the restore). But the thing is that my system restore is set to use 12% of my hardrive, or 4010mb(max allowed). And the file(csystem volume information

Pro Taking Up 5Gb Of Space

May 12, 2005

I have a 5Gb partition purely for XP Pro. Its got to the stage now where that partition is completely full. I've tried clearing temp. internet files etc as the ballon suggests (baloon tells me I'm running out of space on that partition), but this only takes off a few hundred Mb at best, and the extra space is soon filled again. It then suggests removing windows components that aren't used. To be honest, there's very little to remove in here as most things aren't installed. I've had a look through a lot of folders on that partition to seeif there's much I can remove, but I haven't found much to clear out.Han anyone suggest why there is now so much room taken by XP Pro? When I first installed it, it took up about a Gb (I think), and also anyone think of what files I could look to removing?

Files To Large To Access In XP?

Sep 19, 2009

I have a WD 1TB hard drive installed as an extra drive to hold a large series of video files. When it was install I formatted it as NFTS. Now I have ssome folders that have become quited large in actual size (20+GB) and in number of files(800+).When the folders on this drive are accessed that have any size to them (2-6GB or more) the system hangs with a 'windows explorer has encountered a problem.' error. Sometimes I get the Dr. Watson debugging error. Is there a fix for this? The event log states an explorer.exe error. The error as perviously stated states a 'windows explorer problem' not an Internet explorer error.
Running Windows XP home, SP3

I would delete some of these, (some I need) but I can't stay in the folder long enough to access the actual file or files themselves before the system hangs. I can play the files in media player

System Restore In XP - Exe, Toejam - 190,000 Files

Jan 26, 2005

A few months ago I had to do a clean install on my operating system and all is fine with it but before I did the install I tried a few rounds of system restore to try to avoid doing that. It didn't work, but it brings to mind a question. While I was looking around my HD to make sure I had backed everything up I noticed that certain files were named toejam(1).exe, toejam(2).exe, toejam(3).exe, ect all the way up to toejam(8).exe. If you take your computer back in time dosen't this replicate certain system files each and every time you do it? and if so, can you delete the extra files. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that the ones in the middle, toejam(2) through (8), would be OK to delete?I ask this question because I'm helping a friend sort out her computer and every time we do any kind of system scans it takes for EVER. There are over 190,000 files on her computer. I know that she has a lot of music and picture files on there, but I think that most of these files are from the many times she has done a system restore. I have a lot of picture files and MORE music files than she does but I barely break 80.000.Does anyone know how to do this and if it can even be done?

System Restore / Lose All Software And Files

Aug 28, 2005

PC model W2785. It is a 2700+ AMD Athlon XP Processor. 512 MB DDR RAM, I have recently upgraded my graphics to a G-Force FX5500 AGP 8X with 128 MB DDR. I gave all this info just to get to the question: I am having a problem with Window's System Restore. I have through time created several restore points so that I could go back if I needed to replace something that I lost by messing up and deleting some part of some software that's on my computer.

Everytime I try to use Window's System Restore it acts like it is working. It goes through all the procedure, then reboots, but when my computer gets back up and running I get the message that my computer could not be restored to the chosen restore point. It doesn't matter which restore point I choose it is always the same. What do I do to get Window's System Restore to start working again, short of reinstalling my computers original software, which will lose all software and files
