C:Drive Completely Full Of Fragmented Files, Unable To Defrag ?
Mar 18, 2007
C: Drive and it just filled up fragmented files to 95%. I've moved the pagefile to its own drive and added 4gigs more to almost 20 gigs on C. Here's what I did that may or may not have something to do with it. Yesterday I resized the drive that C is on and made four partitions each one for a particular person so that the files didn't get mixed.I used Norton Partition Magic and at the end of each task a window would pop up stating that I should make a new rescue disk
I have a 20 gb NTFS drive that i partitioned to C: 6gb for system files and E: 14gb for programs. I have a second hard drive for data I: 40gb. The C: drive is getting full. when trying to defragment C:, the report shows a bunch of fragmented files in a path called "/RECYCLED". I cannot seem to find that path anywhere on that drive, so I cannot delete those files! Any advice? I also would like to resize the partitions, will QTparted work for NTFS partitions? OR, any chance I can move my system to the 40gb I: drive (probably not).
Tried to defrag hard drive and after action report shows 14.05 GB file that cannot be defragged. Searched for file Documents and Settings Default User Application Data Microsoft ProtectS-1-5-21-676439804-2044662667-630 and got an invalid folder message. Report on volume fragmentation:Total fragmentation=25% File fragmentation=50% Free space fragmentation=0%
I run systemworks o n two computers. Both have XP media center edition. It works fine on the desktop but my laptop it defrags very little. I ususally get the desktop down below 2 percent fragmentation in one try, while my laptop rarely get below 4 percent fragmentation. about a fourth of the time it actually ends up more fragmented after running speed disk.
I have an Acer Aspire notebook, w/ 37 gig hard drive partitioned into two drives. D (backup, archive) is 98% empty. C (everything else) is91% full. Windows NT will not let me defragment the heavily fragmented C partition for lack of minimum 15% free space on the drive. How can I go in and reasign the drive sizes, without dumping everything and reformating? I'm handy with a power tool, but computers frustrate me.
My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
something really weird is happening to my pc.in my hard drive, with a size is 60 gb, i have a folder, inside my docs, that says that i have 42 gb of things. but when a look inside that folder there is nothing. i saw in each folder inside documents and setings and nothing.i saw in temps folders inside of windows folder and i ran the windows utility to clean up and mantainance of my hard drive and i got nothing as a result.i tried crap cleaner, and its usefull, but the problem persist. i dont have a lot of apps installed or mp3 org jpg, files, so i dont know how to start.
I am using Win XP and try to defrag often since I work with a lot of photos and images that i move to CD and then erase from hd. I have a 60gb hd that now has 13% fragmented files that will not defrag. Some are System Volume information_restore others are in my Documents and Settingsapplicationoutlook and some are Documents and SettingsapplicationData1clickDvdcopyvideo
Win xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.
I have noticed on several occasions that when my system displays many fragmented files and I'm waiting for the message stating that I should defrag, it appears that the system defrags on it's own!? All the red is gone and everything is blue. Does keeping the browser cache clean and deleting all but the most recent restore points have any bearing on this issue?
I'm not really sure if this is a Windows problem or a hardware problem, but I'm gonna start here and see where it goes... I'm working on a Dell Dimension 2400 running XPHE, SP1 which has, roughly, a 38 gb harddrive. All but five percent of the drive is filled, mostly with fragmented files huge, solid "chunks" of red, fragmented files. Programs installed and related files total almost 2 gb. Searches for photo, video and other possibly huge files found nothing. All installations considered, less than 10 gb of this drive should be used, yet there is only just over 2 gb available.
i have a HP Pavilion laptop which is about a month or so old. The D drive is labeled as the HP Recovery drive and it is roughly 12 gb. It is formatted in FAT32. I just analyzed it with the disk defrag and it was almost 100% red. The report says the total fragmentation is 47% and the file fragmentation is 97%. Should I defragment this or is it supposed to be this way? And if it's not supposed to be this way does anyone know how or why this happened?
i had to system restore and when i came back all my files where gone but i still ahd the same hard disk space left and then i ran my diskk defragmentor and i found some files that i had that are now fragmented and still takeing up large parts of my memory here is what the Analysis report for the defragmentor said and when i go in to USERDATA to try delte some files it says USERDATA is not assable ,acces is denied and i tryed goin in it on safe mode and im administator on my computer so idk y it wont let me in plase help i only got 4% disk space left and when i click run dick defragmentor it says i need 15% space to run efectively sould i still run it and c what happens?
Unable to defrag my computer. Get message Disk Defragmenter has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run on volume HP-Pavilion(c Please Run Chkdsk /f When I tried to run Chkdsk /f, I get the message: The type of system is NTFS Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts (Y/N)Yes or No I still Can't Defrag and continue to these messages.
When I defrag my system, it appears to be defragmenting, but when it finishes, there are still loads of 'red' fragmented files, hardly anything has changed from before it started. This has been happening now for quite a while.
I'm running Windows XP sp2. Problem is, my C drive fills up. I have removed all but the latest restore point, reduced the max amount of restore point storage to 5%, and removed all of the programs that I don't use very often, moved all of my files to the D drive, clean the cache and remove cookies regularly, and use disk cleanup a lot. After all of this, I only have 1.25GB left in C drive. Not even enough space left to defrag the drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Before long I won't have ANY programs left. I don't use a TV card or anything like that, although I do have the capability to record but never use it.
When I try to defrag I get a message that a Chkdsk/f. is schedualed to run and to run it first I have tried everything to find this Chkdsk/f and can find it no where please some one help me I need to defrag my computer is so slow because of the nee dto defrag.
i cannot use disk defragmenter, when i click analyze or defragment it says "Disk Defragmenter could not start."i try to check the disk and it says "Windows was unable to complete disk check."last, i hope windows system restore could solve my problems, but after i select the restore point, i cannot click 'next', i clicked it and nothing happened.
I think I have a corrupted OS in my hands. My computer worked fine yesterday. This morning I added an extended SATA hard drive. When it booted, Windows XP (Pro SP2) startup seemed unusually slow. After I used the hard drive manufacturer's CD to partition the HD and rebooting, I could not get on any of the limited XP accounts because it required a password when it should not have. I am posting this from Firefox, which with a number of other programs unrelated to Microsoft seem to work for the moment. I think I'm missing system files or they are corrupt. I've recently had a Vundo infection which I did clean up, but now I can't even open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.This would be extremely horrifying had I not had past computer problems of equal horror. I beseech all you benevolent souls reading this to provide some suggestions. Is there anything I could do aside from reinstalling XP?
on my laptop, I use Windows7, IE8, set up yahoo mail as my home page, when I log in to my yahoo mail and click on the internet icon to open new browser it comes with yahoo ID and ask me to insert my password, how to fix this?I use the same on my desktop PC windows XP, and when I click to open new browser it comes a blank yahoo mail page with no any specific ID etc.. For a while now i had a few HUGE files for these games i have and i can't seem to defrag them. does anyone no why or if its even a that much of a big deal.
I've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?
I am running a disk defrag and I get the message that not all the files could be defragmented.I ran chkdsk and repaired the errors but I would get the same message.I then copied the disk to a brand new hard drive and I get the same message form the defrag. When I go to details it refers to outlook.pst and archive.pst being the problem.I ran scanpst.exe on both files and it repaired errors.I run it again and it says no errors are found yet it still holds up defrag. What is wrong with these files and what can I do to repair them?
I just finished doing a defrag on c drive everything went fine but i noticed it was not completely defragged.there are still a lot of red patchesin the progress bar,any ideas on what might cause this?
Trying to help a friend of mine. He had added a shortcut to his desktop, says was active shortcut, ever since then has not been able to change desktop, its white (none) . I went to the sreen to change it and selected the one he wanted . I then closed the system and rebooted, when it first comes up,the background is correct, but when loads icons it reverts to a white background.
i have a brand new computer from crappy MDG and they have alot of stuff that i cant seem to uninstall or remove and id like to change the opperating system. to be honest i would like to just completely remove xp from the hard drive without having to reformat, i just want a clean hard drive so i can do a completely fresh install of windows xp, is this possible?
