Huge Files Of Games Defrag
May 8, 2008For a while now i had a few HUGE files for these games i have and i can't seem to defrag them. does anyone no why or if its even a that much of a big deal.

Defrag Process Defrag All Files
Dec 16, 2007Win xp pro, pen 4, norton antivirus, Win firewall. After I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger the defrag process wouldn't defrag all the files. I reformatted my computer without WLM and defragging was not a problem, worked like a charm. So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. I uninstalled WLM and defrag process still wouldn't defrag all the files. How do I solve this problem of not being able to defrag all of my files without reformatting my computer.

Jun 29, 2007I have large number of very big TMP files (averaging 300mb) that appear in WinTemp, with no applications open. They can appear in a very short period of time (a couple of hours), and I have to boot into Safe Mode w/command prompt to delete them. In a short period of time, they can obliterate as much as 30 gb of disk space. Is there a way to determine what program or utility is writing these files? And if found, is there a way to prevent them from being written? I'm running XP Pro, version 2002, SP2.

Jul 5, 2004I've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?

Feb 28, 2005I am running a disk defrag and I get the message that not all the files could be defragmented.I ran chkdsk and repaired the errors but I would get the same message.I then copied the disk to a brand new hard drive and I get the same message form the defrag. When I go to details it refers to outlook.pst and archive.pst being the problem.I ran scanpst.exe on both files and it repaired errors.I run it again and it says no errors are found yet it still holds up defrag.What is wrong with these files and what can I do to repair them?

Jan 19, 2005Defrag runs for 2-3 minutes maybe and the computer freezes or defrag stalls. I have checked for viruses. I have run defrag in safe mode.

Aug 11, 2008I happen to notice the size of the WindowsSystem32 folder to be a surprising 892 MB. Checking the size of the Windows folder showed a 383 GB size on disk. Aren't these numbers a tad on the large side? Is my system failing to purge trash and temp files by attaching some strange extention on files? Are log files ever labled as anything other than .log? Or temp files ever something besides .tmp? Fellow tech freaks, I await thy wisdom. I'm working on a Dell Dimension 2400 running XPHE, SP1 which has, roughly, a 38 gb harddrive. All but five percent of the drive is filled, mostly with fragmented files huge, solid "chunks" of red, fragmented files. Programs installed and related files total almost 2 gb. Searches for photo, video and other possibly huge files found nothing. All installations considered, less than 10 gb of this drive should be used, yet there is only just over 2 gb available.

Oct 12, 2005I hadn't changed my desktop wallpaper for a while and decided it was time for a change. After trying a few different images and changing them (with right click > properties > desktop> browse), I found one I liked and clicked apply. Then, for some reason about an hour later, the desktop wallpaper turned gray after I closed an explorer window. I restarted, but the desktop was still gray. I right clicked > properties. however, when i clicked the desktop tab, The cpu usage went to 100% for about a minute, but then the tab showed up. the weirdest thing is that now it not only shows the default windows choices, but it seems that it additionally has everything in my "My Pictures" folder listed. That is about 5 thousand images. This is probably why it takes so long to load the tab. My computer has never done this before. I want it back the way it was.

Huge Vertical Lines On Right Side Of LCD Screen
Jan 5, 2010I have a serious problem with some huge vertical lines on my right side of the LCD screen of my Inspiron 9300. ( see picture below)The green(left side) bordered area is the area I can actually see on my screen. The red(right side) marked area is the area covered by the vertical lines. Jun 8, 2008Basically today I bought a 250gb hitachi sata HDD, dvd drive and computer case, got home, assembled the lot. worked fine. Got my Win XP SP2 installation cd and stuck it in the drive... and started to boot it up... it read the disk just fine, but for some reason every damn time it gets to (Mylex EXR2000, 3000/AR160, 170, 352 Raid Controllers) at the bottom of the screen it just stays there and never progresses.
It's causing me so much hassle. I went into the BIOS, turned off all RAID related options since he doesn't even have a RAID. Then that did nothing, figured I would get rid of the SATA drive for now incase that was the issue, put back in the old IDE 20GB drive... same thing happened. Got another Win XP installation disc that i've used loads of times with no problems... but that one came with it's own error.... a missing file apparently? Anyways the PC is sat downstairs with the old 20GB IDE drive in it and the CD drive and not much else really. All raid options in the BIOS are disabled and my mind is falling to pieces.

For example: I deleted nearly 7 gigs worth of stuff from it and checked properties on it, and during the course of a half hour it dropped from 7 gigs to approximately 8megs all by itself. Aug 15, 2007My general understanding is that it isnt necessary to defrag very often. An occasional defrag should do the trick. Unless, maybe, youve done a lot of stuff recently. I do have several questions though that I hope someone can clear up for me and anyone else that might be interested.
1. Does a pre windows defrag program help any at all? If so, how often should it be run?
2. Is this different than the pre installed Microsoft chkdsk program? Isnt it also a pre windows defrag program?
3. Is one or the other better? Or are they basically the same?
4. What happens if, on occasion, you use a pre windows defrag program and the chkdsk program? Is there a conflict?
5. Does one try to write a certain way and the other rewrites a different way and therefore your wasting your time and effort?
6. Does a pre windows defrag program make a windows defrag program unnecessary?
7. Since it has been stated that the windows defrag program works fine, but isnt the greatest, what if you use a different combination, like, JkDefrag and a pre windows program? I mention JkDefrag because, if you wanted, it can be set to defrag daily or weekly. Set and forget.
8. Assuming one is doing a lot of stuff, when does a registry defrag program enter the picture? Or is one ever needed? Is this just a marketing thing?
9. And, of course, there are also registry cleaners. Again, assuming your doing lots of stuff.
10. And also theres also programs like CCleaner program, which cleans out cookies, temp files, etc.
11. Is there an order that one might want to run these programs? Even if it is only monthly or even less often?
So, my inquiry, isnt which program is better, as I would assume there would be a lot of opinions about that. But rather, what combo might one want to have on hand, or run, on those occasions that you feel the need to defrag. Again, if we look at the CCleaner program, in basically one step, it does a pretty good job of cleaning out all sorts of stuff. If you wanted, it can even be set to clean automatically. Set and forget. If one were to do the same steps, manually, it would take much longer, and maybe, still not be as effective as the CCleaner program. I have Zone Alarm firewall. Basically its set and, for the most part, forgotten about. I have the AVG anti virus program, set to do auto scans on a daily basis. Set and forget.
Defrag Will Not Start
Apr 10, 2009I have a Toshiba Qosmio running on XP. More than 50GB available and defragment wont start. Don't know what to do, it never did it before.
