I happen to notice the size of the WindowsSystem32 folder to be a surprising 892 MB. Checking the size of the Windows folder showed a 383 GB size on disk. Aren't these numbers a tad on the large side? Is my system failing to purge trash and temp files by attaching some strange extention on files? Are log files ever labled as anything other than .log? Or temp files ever something besides .tmp? Fellow tech freaks, I await thy wisdom. If I'm just being paranoid, and my OS folders aren't bloated, please pass on anything I can do to keep an eye out for commonly overlooked bad habits of windows xp sp2 including file and folder build-up, leading to sluggish start-up and general degrading of simple operations.
I had 1% free space on my laptop hard drive (OS: Windows XP). After deleting nearly all my music, emails, photos, and documents, there is now 7% free space. I think the problem is my Windows folder, which is 22.2 GB (18,391 Files; 1,819 Folderswhy this folder is big so.
I had my thumb on the left mouse key with a folder selected in wdws explorer tree and was startled by a sound outside. I inadvertantly "dragged" that folder to the left of the tree -- and now that whole huge folder has disappeared. It is not in the recycle bin, and I have even searched the drive with wdws "find files."
OS: windows XP sp2, physical memory:1.5 GB any one knows why my windows folder size is 5 GB.it was 2 GB when my windows was new installed .but after the automatic updates installed , and after i installed Visual studio 2005 ,and other softwares it became 5 GB in size.
Am trying to do a bit of tidying and my F (main) drive has a WINDOWS folder that is 59.6Gb. When I do properties on the folder's contents (including show hidden files) IT ONLY COMES OUT AT 3.3 gB. there there's over 55Gb of stuff that I can;t access to see what I need and what I can delete.
i updated my windows XP home edition to service pack2, but i recently found out that my system32 folder is missing from C:WINDOWS.I also use search to look for it and i couldn't find it anywhere on My Computer.I have also been getting an Application error recently and i have noticed this after i deleted my AVG anti-virus (I'm not sure whether deleting AVG was the problem). The error says:"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.Sometimes the application is rundll32.exe, explorer.exe and when i turn on my computer it says that the error is userinit.exe at the welcome screen.
It appears that I have a corrupt - dll - file in my system32 folder. Can someone please walk me through copying a backup dll file or a new dll zip file to the system32 folder?
I need to overwrilte reg.exe file in the system32 folder, but when I do this XP replace the original automatically. How can I disable this?I need to use "reg update" that there isn't in reg.exe XP version.
Well, reciently I've discovered that my C:WindowsSystem32 folder is gone. Just gone. And it seems that any time a program tries to open something in that folder, it just pops up and says that the file is missing or whatnot.
1. The files are still there. I can access them through IE by typing in the dir in the address bar.
2. The folder is supposedly "Hidden," but I have it set to view all hidden files and folders.
For some reason when ever I start up the folder "system32" appears on my desktop. It's not a big deal it's more annoying than anything but I'm sure when I go to START UP what uncheck to stop this from popping up everytime.
problem #1. why do i always have the system32 folder pop up as soon as im on the desktop? its such a pain, for no reason it comes up... problem #2. why can i not delete the bar on the left side of the screen... its annoying too, and i tried alot of things too problem #3.is there too many svchost things running? i dont know what to terminate if i dont know what its doing other than eating tons of memory
On startup, the System32 folder pops up on the desktop in full screen. Also happens sometimes when starting IE and AOL.Where in the registry do I look for the cause of this?
I made a huge mistake on a friend's computer. I removed a file when a virus software told me to. Unfortunately it was wrong and it thought it was a virus. Now I have to know how I can put the file back. It is csrss.exe
For some reason, my services.exe file on my computer is hogging my CPU, usually holding around 70% of my CPU usage. I'm not sure at all why this is happening. I recently installed a Kensington Bluetooth adapter, could that be the problem? I started having this problem a few days ago, about 5 days after I installed the adapter...
I have large number of very big TMP files (averaging 300mb) that appear in WinTemp, with no applications open. They can appear in a very short period of time (a couple of hours), and I have to boot into Safe Mode w/command prompt to delete them. In a short period of time, they can obliterate as much as 30 gb of disk space. Is there a way to determine what program or utility is writing these files? And if found, is there a way to prevent them from being written? I'm running XP Pro, version 2002, SP2.
At least twice per day Explorer.exe hogs the CPU to 99%. I can only stop it by rebooting. It has started doing so only the last two weeks or so. I use Windows XP Pro, Norton Security, Stopzilla, Counterspy, Microsoft anti spyware, Norton Ghost, Retrospect Express for my backup drive. I have a Pentium 4 2.25 Ghz, 1.5 Gb memory, Nvidia graphic card. I have searched Microsoft Knowledge Base as well as Google groups and have found no answers.
I'm not really sure if this is a Windows problem or a hardware problem, but I'm gonna start here and see where it goes... I'm working on a Dell Dimension 2400 running XPHE, SP1 which has, roughly, a 38 gb harddrive. All but five percent of the drive is filled, mostly with fragmented files huge, solid "chunks" of red, fragmented files. Programs installed and related files total almost 2 gb. Searches for photo, video and other possibly huge files found nothing. All installations considered, less than 10 gb of this drive should be used, yet there is only just over 2 gb available.
For a while now i had a few HUGE files for these games i have and i can't seem to defrag them. does anyone no why or if its even a that much of a big deal.
i just installed windows xp and my quick launch buttons are about 4 times the size they should be is this new in sp2? can i change it? because it's really annoying
I hadn't changed my desktop wallpaper for a while and decided it was time for a change. After trying a few different images and changing them (with right click > properties > desktop> browse), I found one I liked and clicked apply. Then, for some reason about an hour later, the desktop wallpaper turned gray after I closed an explorer window. I restarted, but the desktop was still gray. I right clicked > properties. however, when i clicked the desktop tab, The cpu usage went to 100% for about a minute, but then the tab showed up. the weirdest thing is that now it not only shows the default windows choices, but it seems that it additionally has everything in my "My Pictures" folder listed. That is about 5 thousand images. This is probably why it takes so long to load the tab. My computer has never done this before. I want it back the way it was.
I just typed a huge descriptive letter, went to send it andGone I'll just list whats going on. I ahve a hp pavilion 521n upgraded from maxtor 80g hd to western digital 150g hd upgraded from 384g to 1g of ram(system limit)everest shows that i have 1 stick of 512 ram and 1 stick of 128pc wizard says the same i right click on my computer and it says i have the full 1g of ram.i ran the prime95 "torture test" and it immediately showed errors and said they were hardware related.
I have a serious problem with some huge vertical lines on my right side of the LCD screen of my Inspiron 9300. ( see picture below)The green(left side) bordered area is the area I can actually see on my screen. The red(right side) marked area is the area covered by the vertical lines. Because I'm not replacing this LCD AGAIN, and I don't have the money right now to buy a new computer, I was wondering if there is a program or anything that could let me resize and relocate the "screen", as the buttons on the normal desktop computer monitors, which let you move/stretch/reduce/center/etc the screen display,so that i can relocate the complete screen on the left viewable area of my laptop's LCD.
Basically today I bought a 250gb hitachi sata HDD, dvd drive and computer case, got home, assembled the lot. worked fine. Got my Win XP SP2 installation cd and stuck it in the drive... and started to boot it up... it read the disk just fine, but for some reason every damn time it gets to (Mylex EXR2000, 3000/AR160, 170, 352 Raid Controllers) at the bottom of the screen it just stays there and never progresses.
It's causing me so much hassle. I went into the BIOS, turned off all RAID related options since he doesn't even have a RAID. Then that did nothing, figured I would get rid of the SATA drive for now incase that was the issue, put back in the old IDE 20GB drive... same thing happened. Got another Win XP installation disc that i've used loads of times with no problems... but that one came with it's own error.... a missing file apparently? Anyways the PC is sat downstairs with the old 20GB IDE drive in it and the CD drive and not much else really. All raid options in the BIOS are disabled and my mind is falling to pieces.
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close I get this dozens of times a day and do not know why it keeps happening. I looked at the error report details which was huge and indecipherable and it said the following will be included in the report
I have win xp and my hard drive is literally vanishing while I watch. For example: I deleted nearly 7 gigs worth of stuff from it and checked properties on it, and during the course of a half hour it dropped from 7 gigs to approximately 8megs all by itself. I have not downloaded anything, but I have noticed for some time my space has been vanishing on me. I have msn internet service and it has been creating duplicate emails at an alarming rate. I m not sure if this is the culprit or not but when I deleted it i suddenly had 6 gigs back.
When I click on my Programs Menu and it shows my programs the columns are huge. I don't know how they got so big but I would like to make them smaller because there is no room for new installed programs to show in the columns.
How can we post an attachment "inside" the message in this site when we post either a new post or a reply... versus just having the attachment as a separate item at the bottom of the message that the viewer has to click on to see it? I'm just dying to be able to do that. I have seen huge attachment such as "Print Screen" right along with the written message.
I am trying to copy/paste a clean ntdll.dll into the Windows/System32 folder and to no surprise I cannot as the message I get is another resource is using that file. How can I determine what resource(s) and if so, am I able to disable it in order to replace that file?
I'm doing so as per Windows explorer errors that nobody can seem to resolve and I really dont want to reinstall Windows, I just did it about 7 or 8 months ago.
