Starting Boot - Update Installation Huge
Jun 8, 2008
Basically today I bought a 250gb hitachi sata HDD, dvd drive and computer case, got home, assembled the lot. worked fine. Got my Win XP SP2 installation cd and stuck it in the drive... and started to boot it up... it read the disk just fine, but for some reason every damn time it gets to (Mylex EXR2000, 3000/AR160, 170, 352 Raid Controllers) at the bottom of the screen it just stays there and never progresses.
It's causing me so much hassle. I went into the BIOS, turned off all RAID related options since he doesn't even have a RAID. Then that did nothing, figured I would get rid of the SATA drive for now incase that was the issue, put back in the old IDE 20GB drive... same thing happened. Got another Win XP installation disc that i've used loads of times with no problems... but that one came with it's own error.... a missing file apparently? Anyways the PC is sat downstairs with the old 20GB IDE drive in it and the CD drive and not much else really. All raid options in the BIOS are disabled and my mind is falling to pieces.

A new 250 gig seagate SATA 7200.8 hard drive and a win xp home upgrade edition. enabled SATA in BIOS, connected SATA cable to SATA1 on mobo, BIOS didn't recognize the drive, connected to SATA2 and BIOS did recognize drive so I tried to partition and format using Seagate's DiscWizard from floppy. Things seemed to go fine until I got a message that format wasn't completed because of some error.I went ahead and tried to install from xp cd, loaded SATA drivers from floppy, cd started loading but then hangs up at "setup is starting windows"I've never used SATA before.

I'm currently trying to reinstall XP onto my Sata hard drive. At first I reformatted the existing partition using the longer and more through option. Upon starting a black screen came up saying there was corruption. I attempted to reformat it once more Via the XP install setup, and the drive was not listed. After reformatting the drive once more on another computer, attempting to boot off the CD results in "NTLDR is missing". As a result, I unplugged the SATA cable from the hard drive, and reinserted it while windows install was loading.

While trying to download and install the updates during the last Microsoft "Patch Tuesday" my PC locked up on the very last one KB922770. FIle name: NDP20-KB922770-X86.exe. A security update for .NET Framework 2.0. I waited patiently and still it did not install after 25 minutes. So, I had to shut down using the power button, rebooted and downloaded the file manually and tried installing it.

hope someone can help me! I have windows XP and a while ago IE stopped being able to download, i have resolved that by reinstalling IE, however about the same time my windows update installations were failing and i thought it was because of my download problem in IE however now IE is fixed but i still cannot install windows updates. Before anyone tells me to go into tools, options, security blah blah, i have done that already but it has not resolved the problem. The error message i get is just a box that says updates were unable to be successfully installed then a list of the updates it was unable to install, but no reason for the error or number is given.

Windows update shield informs me I need to install Office XP SP3. I click on it, but the installation hangs up halfway through asking me to insert the Office XP CD - which I don't have.
Went to Microsoft download page and clicked on full file version (SINCE I don't have the CD), but still get the request to insert the CD halfway through the installation. Since I can't complete the download, the update icon pops up every time I log on. Any suggestions?

For several weeks now I haven't been able to download/update Windows updates. I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time.

When I start my non-brand PC with an MSI mobo I receive the following message:disk boot failure insert system disk and press enterAt first I thought it was the SATA hard drive but when hooked up to another machine I can see all the files. When I went into the Phoenix/Award Bios all the drives are IDE drives. Not an SATA drive option anywhere. The computer was working great for a number of years. I hooked a brand new SATA drive and the BIOS does not recognize the drive.

Last night Windows automatically began to install updates as I was logging off. By the time I realised, I had turned the power supply off the computer had therefore not shut down properly.Tried to swith on today and I get a "Windows did not start successfuly message" with a range of options including safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start normally. No matter which one I choose, it gets as far as the XP loading screen then reverts back to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen.I therefore did the F8 after the Bios which took me to the advanced options menu. I disabled the auto restart and I get an error Unmountable Boot Volume - error code 0x000000ED.

I am having probllems installing Windows XP, first of all the installation is unusually slow, it has more than 5 hours installing. Then i have a boot error from Windows NOT from the BIOS, i have tried getting into the Repair Console an using FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, unsuccesfully; removed every suspecious setting on my BIOS..... The installator copies small parts, copy 1% or 2% and stops for a while (I think it is decompressing the files, but that slow!?). After that i get a booting error (I dont remember what does it says; i will post it later, when my 4th attemp ends).

Turn the computer on, it starts to boot, I see the compaq splash screen then the blue windows is starting. Then it just restarts the process over. I have tried to repair windows: The F8 to last known good config & F8 safe and it just restarts from both of those as well. Win XP SP3 Currently doing this: You can boot from the cd and press R to go to the recovery console. Your best bet is to try running Checkdisk. So once in the recovery console, type chkdsk /r and press enter. It could take from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the repairs it needs to make

I installed Windows XP Home Edition with SP1 on a brand new home built computer and downloaded the beginning programs, firefox, spyware blaster, I visited microsoft.com to install all the updates; SP2 I believe among other things, and when I shut the computer down to finalize the installation of the updates it did not boot back up. It just stays on the Windows XP screen with the moving blue bars then goes black and goes to the first boot screen again. I system restored to before the updates and tried to install them before I installed all my other programs and when I restarted it after the installation it failed to boot up again?

I had to re-install the boot manager GRUB Now, Windows does not boot no more and even worse I cannot even boot from CD either (-> recovery console)"Examining your hardware." flashes shortly and then the screen turns black and that's it. I think a fixmbr may help but since I cannot boot from CD. it's a notebook and I have a recovery partition at the beginning of the hard drive.

I have an extremely old computer which I wanted to see if it could boot from USB. I checked the motherboard to see if I could change the boot order to USB but all I could change it too was "Removable Devices" which I then put in the #1 spot to boot. I restarted my computer with my USB drive plugged in, but it booted to XP like normal. Is there a bios update that I can update my mobo too, so that it can boot to usb or is it just too old?

I had my thumb on the left mouse key with a folder selected in wdws explorer tree and was startled by a sound outside. I inadvertantly "dragged" that folder to the left of the tree -- and now that whole huge folder has disappeared. It is not in the recycle bin, and I have even searched the drive with wdws "find files."

I happen to notice the size of the WindowsSystem32 folder to be a surprising 892 MB. Checking the size of the Windows folder showed a 383 GB size on disk. Aren't these numbers a tad on the large side? Is my system failing to purge trash and temp files by attaching some strange extention on files? Are log files ever labled as anything other than .log? Or temp files ever something besides .tmp? Fellow tech freaks, I await thy wisdom. If I'm just being paranoid, and my OS folders aren't bloated, please pass on anything I can do to keep an eye out for commonly overlooked bad habits of windows xp sp2 including file and folder build-up, leading to sluggish start-up and general degrading of simple operations.

I have large number of very big TMP files (averaging 300mb) that appear in WinTemp, with no applications open. They can appear in a very short period of time (a couple of hours), and I have to boot into Safe Mode w/command prompt to delete them. In a short period of time, they can obliterate as much as 30 gb of disk space. Is there a way to determine what program or utility is writing these files? And if found, is there a way to prevent them from being written? I'm running XP Pro, version 2002, SP2.

I hope I never need it, but just as a precaution, I made a Boot disk using a freeware program "PE Builder". The process seemed to go ok, but there was a warning that "building from an OEM version of Windows can mean trouble..."

I am trying to install a second copy of XP Pro on my system. I have the first installation on my first hard disc which is partition C: . I have another hard disc which has two partitions D: and Z:. D: has my data and Z: (20gb) is going to be for testing programs and settings and such without installing them on my main disc.
I loaded my XP Pro CD into the optical drive and went through the menus to install a new OS on partition Z. I did a quick format of partition Z in NTFS format. Installation proceeded and the computer rebooted just like usual. Then as it got to the preparing windows installation screen it froze. Just stopped. I restarted and it tried to resume but would freeze immediately again. I checked the boot.ini file and it is just like it should be. With both OS listed. I tried doing this three times and I got the same results each time. My original OS still works fine. I am considering completely reformating the partition and removing all traces of the installatiuon from the boot.ini file but if anyone has any other ideas that are easier I would like to know.

I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.

I tried to update my BIOS on my Acer AOA150 Netbook (I know, terrible idea, I wanted it to be updated in case I used a 9 cell battery). I downloaded the BIOS, version 3310, from http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...&LC=en&SC=PA_7
I clicked on one of the readme files and it said to click on one of the executable files included in the download and to then click "sure." Once I clicked sure, my computer immediately shut down. I tried to turn it on after only about 5 seconds. It simply will not start up completely but I *can* get to the F2 screen. If I choose not to go with the F2 option, the normal Windows XP flashing image will come up, except it flashes slightly slower than normal. Then, right before the screen can display my various accounts to start windows, the netbook completely shuts off. This is an Acer AOA 150 model netbook. I downloaded the BIOS.
I may have tried to turn it on while the computer was still trying to flash the BIOS. Or, I just messed up from the start by trying to do it from Windows.
