View 2 RepliesI have Windows XP and there are apparently a lot of programs starting up that don't need to be. (I remember when I had another version of Windows that allowed me to see what the heck was running in the background easier than the XP does--make sense?). Anyway, I think that I'm having too many programs starting up and running in the background that don't need to be. I am sure that this has been asked on this forum a bazillion times, and I've searched but I can't seem to find the answer to my question. How do I stop all of these programs from running in the background?

View 7 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop I had partitioned the main Hard Disk into 2 and had XP Pro on one half and Windows 7 on the other. When I used to boot up the PC the windows boot menu came up asking if I wanted to boot to XP or 7.Soon afetr this XP started crashing a lot. So I decided to scrap 7 and I've re-partitioned the Hard Disk into one big lump with only XP remaining. The partition that had 7 on it no longer exists. Why does my PC still start with the windows boot menu when I start it up?It still asks me if I want to boot to windows 7 or an earlier version of windows? Is there a way of stopping this?
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen I start up, I get the blue windows screen saying it needs to "check file and folders," but at the bottom of the screen where it gives the percentage scanned, it stays at zero, and after a couple of minutes, goes to a black screen and and says "machine_check_exception STOP:OV000009c,."whatever that means. If I hit anything on the keyboard (on the first screen) before it attempts to scan, it starts up fine, and runs fine. I tried defrag and doing the "correct error" thing from the Properties tab in My Computer C Drive. I used to get this if the computer was not shut down properly, but it would scan up to 100%. Now it does nothing. how to correct this, or should I expect the whole thing to crash if I keep using it this way?

When I log on and all I want to do is load my desk top and click on AOL, I have all these programs I need to click thru til I can actually get to the process of getting on the internet. I thought I could go to start menu - control panel - start menu and select what I wanted to start running when I logged on to the computer, I don't see anything there that will allow me to not have spybot, spysweeper, aim, yahoo start running when I log on. I know I researched this before but cannot for the life of me remember how to start up my computer and stop all these processes from running and holding me up
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I startup, the computer usage runs way up to 80-100% and it takes forever to start a program. It immidiately starts this whenever I just turn the computer on, and I hear it because the sound that Windows makes at startup gets scratchy and stutters. Once it has started up, if I click on iTunes (for example), once the program pops up and I click on Play, every song stutters. It stutters only at the beginning and then it smooths out, but it does it for every single song played.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a few things that I can't stop from loading on start-up. I don't use the programs (or very rarely use them) so I just end up right-clicking on them on the toolbar to stop them. I tired going into the options for each program to stop them from loading on start-up but can't find a way to do it.
Is there a way to view what loads on start-up so I can remove them from the list?
I want to know how you can stop programs minimising. I want to watch a google video while using another program, however when I go to it the google video is minimised.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend has a new HP desktop with Win XP Home. He told me that something pops up - usually every two minutes - and nothing happens.I saw the following: stop all active programs, click the desktop, wait a while, and sure enough, the cursor gets a small hourglass and then returns to normal. If you are in any other program when this happens, you lose focus and have to regain it manually.I'm at a loss as to how to detect what, exactly, is going on.Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to monitor this to determine the culprit?

I am working on my mother in laws computer so I am not sure what happened when the errors first started happening. She has a Dell and is running XP home edition. When I got the computer and booted it up, I got the following errors:
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal and iastor.sys address F861A25F base at F860B000 date stamp 42b2df42. At this point I could not boot up at all, not even in safe mode.
When I start my non-brand PC with an MSI mobo I receive the following message:disk boot failure insert system disk and press enterAt first I thought it was the SATA hard drive but when hooked up to another machine I can see all the files. When I went into the Phoenix/Award Bios all the drives are IDE drives. Not an SATA drive option anywhere. The computer was working great for a number of years. I hooked a brand new SATA drive and the BIOS does not recognize the drive.
Basically today I bought a 250gb hitachi sata HDD, dvd drive and computer case, got home, assembled the lot. worked fine. Got my Win XP SP2 installation cd and stuck it in the drive... and started to boot it up... it read the disk just fine, but for some reason every damn time it gets to (Mylex EXR2000, 3000/AR160, 170, 352 Raid Controllers) at the bottom of the screen it just stays there and never progresses.
It's causing me so much hassle. I went into the BIOS, turned off all RAID related options since he doesn't even have a RAID. Then that did nothing, figured I would get rid of the SATA drive for now incase that was the issue, put back in the old IDE 20GB drive... same thing happened. Got another Win XP installation disc that i've used loads of times with no problems... but that one came with it's own error.... a missing file apparently? Anyways the PC is sat downstairs with the old 20GB IDE drive in it and the CD drive and not much else really. All raid options in the BIOS are disabled and my mind is falling to pieces.
Last night Windows automatically began to install updates as I was logging off. By the time I realised, I had turned the power supply off the computer had therefore not shut down properly.Tried to swith on today and I get a "Windows did not start successfuly message" with a range of options including safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start normally. No matter which one I choose, it gets as far as the XP loading screen then reverts back to the "Windows did not start successfully" screen.I therefore did the F8 after the Bios which took me to the advanced options menu. I disabled the auto restart and I get an error Unmountable Boot Volume - error code 0x000000ED.
View 8 Replies View RelatedTurn the computer on, it starts to boot, I see the compaq splash screen then the blue windows is starting. Then it just restarts the process over. I have tried to repair windows: The F8 to last known good config & F8 safe and it just restarts from both of those as well. Win XP SP3 Currently doing this: You can boot from the cd and press R to go to the recovery console. Your best bet is to try running Checkdisk. So once in the recovery console, type chkdsk /r and press enter. It could take from 20 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the repairs it needs to make

It seems to do it either sporadically when im away from it or using it for long periods of time. I recently installed a brand new power supply Ultra 400 watts ATX power supply. It seems to be getting worse with time. Im currently running disk defragmenter hoping this issue can be resolved soon. I have a bad feeling it may be my motherboard

For security reasons, windows can not synchronize with the server because your date does not match. Please fix the date and try again.

When trying to start XP Media Center 2005 in safe mode, it completes loading Mups.sys, the screen goes blank and flickers slightly like it's changing video modes, and i get a "BSOD"/blue screen (photo attached)The computer boots normally in XP when booted normally, and in Kubuntu 7.04/Feisty and Kubuntu 7.10/ Gutsy when booted normally and in recovery mode.I suspect the problem may have to do with the failed install of the Netscape Activex Wrapper Plugin from buzzen.com which (supposedly) lets Gecko-based browsers run Activex scripts intended for IE7, but I'm not sure as I haven't used safe mode in some time
