Stop The Programs That Run Automatically After Startup?
May 9, 2007
there are a few programs that automatically start when I start up my computer. Now ive run acrossed it before but now I can't find it and I was wondering how I get those things from automatically starting.
When I start PC, it automatically takes me to the startup options part to reboot in safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, safemode w/ prompt, last known good config, & normal startup. Getting Stop c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file) SystemRootSystem32Config
I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My new xp pro machine is adding a folder to docs & settings that has name of user - dot - name of machine. Example: Steve.Office. Why is this happening?each time I delete it, it is recreated. How can I stop xp from doing this?
here is the problem: when I plug in an USB device, windows will install the driver for the device automaticlly if: 1. the driver comes with the system.
2. the device driver has been installed.
I wanna stop windows installing driver automatically but ask me the location of the driver when I plug in a device every time. How do I do that?
I use earthlink DSL and the offered a clean up system for free (PC finetune) so I tried it because my computer was a little slow. Well, after installing and rebooting up dates came up. I let in automatically install updates. I know 'stupid'. I now have it set to notify me before installing. Anyway, one of the updates was some version on windows explorer. It is always attempting to Install. It doesn't say what what it is installing. I look on the internet and one told me how to find out what it is attempting to install. It came back as "3.1.400.5512" I'm think that is internet explorer 3.1 not sure. It slows my computer, won't let me go online because it interfers with the sign on window pop up.
Recieved this error, STOP : 0x0000000A, 0xFEFD7000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804FA497,Memory tested fine with mem86.I am suspecting a defective Video Card?
Is there any way in XP to install a device driver manually. I've tried using update driver in the device manager but it tells me I already have the best driver. If I unistall the driver, when I use the add hardware wizard, windows automatically installs its own driver.?
Win XP Home edition. I'm in the Speed Up Windows Startup class. I currently have a very long list of startup programs running. Is it safe for me to disable all except security programs (Symantec Norton,AdAware,Spyguard)?Charles
my computer has started to close programs automatically after 5 to 10 minutes. this includes games, java programs and sometimes even norton. im not too sure why this is happening. I recently installed a new fan into my computer with LED lights, could it be because of this?
my family have damaged the computer in some way that im not sure about. I do not know whether its a virus or something else. On startup, all the programs that run automatically fail to and the "Program not responding" message is displayed for each one, and programs continue try to open to no effect. Any program which i try opening after that also has this problem. When i look at the task manager, no processes are given any memory usage.
I have an XP Pro and I know there is some place I can go to remove all of the darn icons in the lower right hand corner. All I need there is my fire wall and my antivirus. It takes so darn long for the computer to boot and wondering if this is part of the problem. If I just delete them are they still running in the background some where?
Every time I re-boot I get different programs automatically started and placed on the task bar (Lower right on the screen). Certain programs always start, others start at different times - very confusing. Changing the start up table doesn't seem to affect the situation.
2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.
Computer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.
Problem is that on startup, a window is automatically opening. The window is: C:program filesdell This only started happening a few days ago after trying to watch a DVD
Recently my computer folder automatically opens at startup. I've tried going to msconfig and regedit to fix the problem per the instructions I've seen on the web but it doesn't work.
I have my Windows 2K and Windows 98 PC running fine. It brings up a startup option and I select the option that I want. My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt. Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.
how to stop programs stating up on their own,i.e. I have real player which I rarely use, however it is permantely in my system tray, I think that what you call it, where the little icon tell you what is running, I would like not to have real player there.
It got infected with Windows Police Pro. After disabling that, there are several 'remnants' left over. The only way I can run any spyware/malware removal programs is to install it fresh. The program(s) will open, then it'll shut down 2 seconds into the scan. It even shuts down my registry cleaner as soon as it begins to clean (after it finds all the errors). All these programs simply terminate themselves. It does this in SafeMode as well.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a freeware program or some sort of tweak that will allow me to automatically rotate the sounds I hear during Windows XP startup. Can't for the life of me find any advice on this anywhere.I don't want a whole Desktop Theme changer I just want to hear different wav files when I fire up the computer.
I've got a few things that I can't stop from loading on start-up. I don't use the programs (or very rarely use them) so I just end up right-clicking on them on the toolbar to stop them. I tired going into the options for each program to stop them from loading on start-up but can't find a way to do it.
Is there a way to view what loads on start-up so I can remove them from the list?
I want to know how you can stop programs minimising. I want to watch a google video while using another program, however when I go to it the google video is minimised.
Is there a program which locks programs in place so I can watch the google video while I type something in Word etc.
I have Windows XP and there are apparently a lot of programs starting up that don't need to be. (I remember when I had another version of Windows that allowed me to see what the heck was running in the background easier than the XP does--make sense?). Anyway, I think that I'm having too many programs starting up and running in the background that don't need to be. I am sure that this has been asked on this forum a bazillion times, and I've searched but I can't seem to find the answer to my question. How do I stop all of these programs from running in the background?
A friend has a new HP desktop with Win XP Home. He told me that something pops up - usually every two minutes - and nothing happens.I saw the following: stop all active programs, click the desktop, wait a while, and sure enough, the cursor gets a small hourglass and then returns to normal. If you are in any other program when this happens, you lose focus and have to regain it manually.I'm at a loss as to how to detect what, exactly, is going on.Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to monitor this to determine the culprit?
I am working on my mother in laws computer so I am not sure what happened when the errors first started happening. She has a Dell and is running XP home edition. When I got the computer and booted it up, I got the following errors:
driver_irql_not_less_or_equal and iastor.sys address F861A25F base at F860B000 date stamp 42b2df42. At this point I could not boot up at all, not even in safe mode.
This started happening a few months ago, & I have just been living with it, but now I'm very tired of it. When ever I boot, or restart my computer, the startup folder automatically opens on the desktop. Can someone tell me how to stop this from happening? Also recently, whenever I open a Microsoft program, Word, Excell Office Project tries to load. I have to cluck Cancel several times to stop it.
