View 1 RepliesIn recently restoring my crashed machine, I noticed that when the machine was
idle, it would go back to the user login screen. I found this tedious as I
just wanted it to go to screen saver but stay within the user session. I ran
'control userpasswords2' and de-clicked 'Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer.' (It's a home computer so not worried). Now
when I reboot, it brings up a Windows login for Administrator and says,
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." I can bypass that
and log in as Owner or anybody else so it's more cosmetic than anything else.Question - who is this "Administrator?" The account doesn't show up under
User Accounts. 'Owner' is the Administrator. Do I care about this account
(which appears to be hidden? Should I allow it to log in under the covers? If
so, do I have to re-click 'Users must enter a user name and password, etc."
Someone told me that my computer is running slow because I have too many programs running in the background. Could this be true and if so, how do I delete the unnecessary programs and more to the point, how do I recognize which programs are necessary and which are not?

Well I restart and now everytime I get an error message saying that the password is incorrect, I press accept, then it shows me the blue logn screen where I can choose the other account.Where can I make Windows not try to automatically load the previous user, and automatically load the new one?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to find this easily anywhere, but this morning I started my comp. and I was taken to the welcome screen to select my user account - only, I never created a user account because i'm the only one using my computer and don't want an extra step between me and the desktop. View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to change this XP Home so that there is no need to select a user account from the two that are listed onscreen? One user is on the other side of the US, doesn't use this thing, did once, never will again but the second user account is the one that we use all the time.If it can be set to load up to that account all the time instead of giving an onscreen choice it would be a big help. Turn it on and forget it kind of thing.Courtesy to a family member we wouldn't want to deleted the unused account either just bypass the choices screen and load the same user account all the time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery so often I check around and make sure everything is as it should be. A few days ago I discovered a new user account on my computer called ASP.net. When I googled it , it told me it came from Microsoft. If they have a user account on my machine don't they have acess to everything on my computer? I seem to remember downloading Update so maybe it came from that. I deleted the account right away anyway
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell laptop that I have tried many times to password but it sort of doesn't work. The laptop has Windows XP Professional on it, Version 2002 with Service pack 2.My husband bought it from a buddy at work who's wife wanted a laptop, but then decided she didn't like it. She didn't delete her account so it's still under her name.I have set up a user account in my name on it and passworded it. When I reboot the laptop, it goes straight into "her" account. I want the screen where it gives me the User names so you have to type my password in order to even access the laptop. It always totally bypasses that screen.
I tried setting up a dummy account and turned on the Guest account and rebooted the laptop. I STILL don't get the User login screen.I really want this to work because for 1. the laptop is being used only for backing up personal family pictures and I'd really rather be able to password my children out of it and 2. when I go to my girlfriends' house, her mother seems to think she can just help herself to my laptop whenever she feels like it. I'd logged off - it's the only way to get the User login screen - but somehow she managed to bypass it. I KNOW the only way around it is to reboot the laptop, but she swears up and down she just opened the lid and the account was open.

I tried my email program and it was asked me to set it all up. I then went into mydocuments and it was empty. So if I go into my drive and look at Documents and Setting I normally only had Administrator, AllUsers and my other ID motopsycho. Now I have the following....Administrato Administrator.Chris
Administrator.Chris.000 AllUsers AllUsers.WinNT motopsycho Now if I go into just the regular Administrator I can see all MyDocuments, MyFavorites etc. but I seem to be booting up with the Administrator.Chris.00
I don't want my computer to automatically log in to a user's account on startup, and it does so even if there is more than one administrator account, and the 'Welcome screen' is disabled.

Windows XP desktop user new alternate login temp...Background: The PC in question has Win XP Home SP3. I recently reformatted the hard drive and restored the entire system including all updates, drivers, etc. Each person in my family has a logon. After doing the reinstall of Windows and setting up the user accounts, I logged into each to set up their "My Documents" folder set and restore their files, etc. from backup (on a secondary hdd.) I also restored a few other personalizations like wallpaper and jumped through the "Welcome to Windows XP" hoops. When I was done, all user accounts were established and had been logged into at least once if not more

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently assigned a new user (the first one) to an XP machine. Previously, as it started up, it prompted with "Administrator" and a password field (which I had left blank), and a message about being able to setup users once I logged in. Now, having assigned a user, all I get is the offering of the new user, and when clicking on that I get prompted for the password. When I type in the password, the desktop is nothing like what it used to look like when I went in through "Administrator" - the desktop image is gone and the shortcuts that were on the desktop are gone. And my drive mappings to my network are gone. How do I get back to the "Administrator" login screen? and/or assign the Administrator desktop to the new user?
View 6 Replies View RelatedComputer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP. It was running fine until last night, when it automatically installed 8 updates before shutting down. This morning, there is a problem. I turn on the computer. It works fine for about 2 minutes, then slows down and won't respond for at least 20 seconds to anything. The fan is running loud as though it is "thinking" about something or working really hard even though I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. If I want to shut down, I have to do it manually. Then, when I restart, it works for 2 minutes and slows again. In those first 2 minutes, I tried checking my email, using a couple programs, etc. and they work fine until it decides to slow down. I have restarted it about 5 times with the same results every time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have XP make me password login when I turn it on, but I'm just wondering, is there a way to have it automatically log me in, then go to the switch user screen? I ask this because it usually takes mine a while to load up to the logon screen, but then I have to go back and login before it works properly, so yeah, I'd just like to get it to log me in, load up, then got to the switch user screen so that I can go watch TV for half an hour, come back, and be ready to go.
