Making Auto-login / Go To Switch User Screen
Apr 28, 2007
I currently have XP make me password login when I turn it on, but I'm just wondering, is there a way to have it automatically log me in, then go to the switch user screen? I ask this because it usually takes mine a while to load up to the logon screen, but then I have to go back and login before it works properly, so yeah, I'd just like to get it to log me in, load up, then got to the switch user screen so that I can go watch TV for half an hour, come back, and be ready to go.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but my XP switches to the 'switch user' setting every time the screen saver comes on. It gets really annoying so I wondered if anyone could tell me how to turn it off.

Is there a way to hide user accounts on the XP start-up screen without switching to the "CLASSIC" mode? XP created the default 'Administrator' account, which is what it's supposed to do, but I don't what it to be visible to other users. I know how to switch to the classic view, but would like to keep the new XP view for ease of use by the other users.

In recently restoring my crashed machine, I noticed that when the machine was
idle, it would go back to the user login screen. I found this tedious as I
just wanted it to go to screen saver but stay within the user session. I ran
'control userpasswords2' and de-clicked 'Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer.' (It's a home computer so not worried). Now
when I reboot, it brings up a Windows login for Administrator and says,
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." I can bypass that
and log in as Owner or anybody else so it's more cosmetic than anything else.Question - who is this "Administrator?" The account doesn't show up under
User Accounts. 'Owner' is the Administrator. Do I care about this account
(which appears to be hidden? Should I allow it to log in under the covers? If
so, do I have to re-click 'Users must enter a user name and password, etc."

I have a Dell laptop that I have tried many times to password but it sort of doesn't work. The laptop has Windows XP Professional on it, Version 2002 with Service pack 2.My husband bought it from a buddy at work who's wife wanted a laptop, but then decided she didn't like it. She didn't delete her account so it's still under her name.I have set up a user account in my name on it and passworded it. When I reboot the laptop, it goes straight into "her" account. I want the screen where it gives me the User names so you have to type my password in order to even access the laptop. It always totally bypasses that screen.
I tried setting up a dummy account and turned on the Guest account and rebooted the laptop. I STILL don't get the User login screen.I really want this to work because for 1. the laptop is being used only for backing up personal family pictures and I'd really rather be able to password my children out of it and 2. when I go to my girlfriends' house, her mother seems to think she can just help herself to my laptop whenever she feels like it. I'd logged off - it's the only way to get the User login screen - but somehow she managed to bypass it. I KNOW the only way around it is to reboot the laptop, but she swears up and down she just opened the lid and the account was open.

I'm going to create 30+ user accounts. They will be all running at the same time, running the same program. (the only way I've figured out how to dual-boot the same program) and I was wondering... Is there anyway to make it somehow use less resources doing so? Like, so far I've gone into Advanced > Performance and killed the switch on everything. I was just wondering, after days of running non-stop, it is bound to start eating up RAM or even cache to much, right? If so, what can I do to stretch the time this happens in? What else can I switch off/disable for each user to eat up less resources?

I have XP Entertainment Home Edition. My system boots up to the user profile screen where I can choose between the two profiles If I select either profile a blank desktop appears (no icons/no windows task bar) and freezes Trying to boot into Safe Mode also hangs after choosing a profile. It's a Dell so I don't have the XP cds to try a repair. I do have other computers with different versions of XP installed that are working fine

I have Windows XP Pro and powertoys allows me to set auto-login for my administrator account. It's a single user system and it's convenient not to have to enter a password each time I fire up. If I hibernate, however, instead of shutdown then the auto-login doesn't work and I'm forced to the login window. Any way around this?

so every time I log in to windows xp pro the system starts to load the user settings background and startup programs then I get a message that the system can't load one of the startup programs because the system is shutting down. then the system completely shuts off. After an exhaustive search online I found the recovery/copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe fix and tried that but I still get the auto logoff. I've tried repairing the installation using the OEM CD, but that only works for the first login. after that, same issue. I've run antivirus and spyware apps to check the system, but found nothing (I did this inbetween repairs). After 6 times of going through this I'm ready to reinstall from scratch. It just annoys me that windows can break so easily. Did I meniton I hate windows? Anything you could suggest, would be appreciated. I wait to here from someone in the forum before tackling such a HUGE project as to reinstall Windows and all my programs and data.

Recently, when trying to access the User Accounts option in Control Panel, it keeps opening a blank NotePad with the error message "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." Although I can still log in and log off normally and everything. Also, I have set my computer to Auto-login.

I only have 1 user on my computer, but it doesn't automatically log-in for me anymore. I never changed the settings, it just did on it's own this morning for some reason. Also, now for some reason instead of going to a screen saver when I'm inactive for like 10 minutes, it will instead take me back to the log in screen. Also, how can I stop Windows Messenger (a weak version of MSN Messenger) from starting when I turn on my computer? I'm using Windows XP.

I'm using Win XP sp2 and I usually leave my computer on 24/7. This morning I tried to open a file but it never opened. I went into the task manager to see if its even processing and it was there but the ccapp was taking all the cpu. So i tried to shutdown and restart. After that windows boots up to the login screen just fine but when i click on my account it take a long time to show my wallpaper. I can pull up task manager and the cpu isnt being used. the hdd is only accessed in little bursts. After a while the start menu pops up. any keyboard commands like to bring up win explorer takes a long time and all the commands pop up in a big burp of of command executions. I'm trying to reach system restore but cant. I'm not sure how to get into safemode with this system because just after post when f8 is usually used to bring up the menu the system opens a boot drive selection screen. During the RAM tests during post theres text stating press del to enter bios and f8 to enter boot drive selection so im not sure how to get to safemode now.

This one has been hard to research, because all of the search terms are so common and generic. Windows XP desktop user new alternate login temp...Background: The PC in question has Win XP Home SP3. I recently reformatted the hard drive and restored the entire system including all updates, drivers, etc. Each person in my family has a logon. After doing the reinstall of Windows and setting up the user accounts, I logged into each to set up their "My Documents" folder set and restore their files, etc. from backup (on a secondary hdd.) I also restored a few other personalizations like wallpaper and jumped through the "Welcome to Windows XP" hoops. When I was done, all user accounts were established and had been logged into at least once if not more

I recently assigned a new user (the first one) to an XP machine. Previously, as it started up, it prompted with "Administrator" and a password field (which I had left blank), and a message about being able to setup users once I logged in. Now, having assigned a user, all I get is the offering of the new user, and when clicking on that I get prompted for the password. When I type in the password, the desktop is nothing like what it used to look like when I went in through "Administrator" - the desktop image is gone and the shortcuts that were on the desktop are gone. And my drive mappings to my network are gone. How do I get back to the "Administrator" login screen? and/or assign the Administrator desktop to the new user?
