i can't switch user it just cancels and doesn't do anything. I go to control panel and Fast User Switching is off, but i try to trun it on. i press Apply Option and i go back to it and its off again. I was tweaking the computer earlier and i think i by accidently messed up the the registry or turned off a service.
View 14 RepliesI'm going to create 30+ user accounts. They will be all running at the same time, running the same program. (the only way I've figured out how to dual-boot the same program) and I was wondering... Is there anyway to make it somehow use less resources doing so? Like, so far I've gone into Advanced > Performance and killed the switch on everything. I was just wondering, after days of running non-stop, it is bound to start eating up RAM or even cache to much, right? If so, what can I do to stretch the time this happens in? What else can I switch off/disable for each user to eat up less resources?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI messed up my registry and now I can't get any audio, and my DVD and CD ROM drives won't play music/movies. Luckly I have a copy of the registry saved on my hard drive. When I try to merge the file I get this error " Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes" How do I go around this? I really do not want to re-install windows again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a big problem, I was trying to change the icons for my file types in explorer specificaly under tools/folder options/file types. Well I changed the icons for the AudioCD,DVD,Drive,File Folder and Folder there was no bad results from the audio and dvd nor the others, it just didnt change my icons to what i wanted it to be so whatever i moved on. Well after i did those things i started to notice that when im using explorer every time i open a folder it would open in a different window so im like maybe i forgot to put a check in the open in the same window in the folder options. So I checked and to my suprise it was checked. I started to search the web for answers and I found a forum and saw that the problem could be in my registry specificaly in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT so I deleted the Folder,Directory and Drive registry folders in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT now I cant access my C drive and my folders fortunatly i can use my browser and other apps i just cant access my drive and documents .
View 3 Replies View Relatedso i installed service pack 2 today and had restarted the computer only to find that the welcome screen didn't appear, but the normal log in screen that i was used to seeing with earlier windows os. i logged in as both myself and my mom trying to make the welcome screen return, but nothing i've tried works. we are also unable to do the quick switch thing so we're being forced to completely log off and then log on again under our respective user names. whenever i try to switch accounts i get this message:This computer is in use and has been locked.'Only *insert name here* or an administrator can unlock it

View 1 Replies View RelatedTo mess around and make a new account on the PC as he was logged in as the Administrator of the computer. They had no other accounts except for the default Administrator account that they had used. So the son made a new account which he also granted th permission of computer amdinistrator. since that overworte the previous Administrators account that was on there everytime they log in they get the new account and there is no way to delete the new one that has been created... Even when I tried to go into safe mode and log in as the default administrator for some reason it won't let me delete the account even though you are the Administrator and Microsoft even says."You must be an administrator to delete another administrators account" you can't even change it to a limited Account.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine. I would turn on the computer and it'll go straight into my desktop and I'll see all my files and icons on the desktop. Just 2 days ago, my son decides to "create" his own user account and he happens to set it him up also as the "administrator". When ever we turn on the computer, it would go to a screen and it would ask us to select a user to log on as (only one avail, it's his). We'd click his user account and it goes to a desktop, however, there is only 2 icons (recycle bin and adobe reader), nothing else. Where are my files/icons? How do I fix it? I rather undo what he did but it appears that I can't delete his user account because he is the administrator.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently have XP make me password login when I turn it on, but I'm just wondering, is there a way to have it automatically log me in, then go to the switch user screen? I ask this because it usually takes mine a while to load up to the logon screen, but then I have to go back and login before it works properly, so yeah, I'd just like to get it to log me in, load up, then got to the switch user screen so that I can go watch TV for half an hour, come back, and be ready to go.

Note: You cannot decide what text you want to appear; it's predefined, based on the version of Windows you are running. For example, the text for Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 will be along the lines of:

Procedure:
1) Click the Start button, click Run, type regedit and click OK

Windows ME then my daughter downloaded windows XP,so she could use her IPOD as she couldn't use it with Windows ME, now nothing seems to work and I keep getting messenger service messages saying my registry is corrupt and other similar messages. My laptop was in perfect working order last night but when I came to turn it on this morning it wouldn't. No screen, no sound. Tried again and got a high pitched continuos beep from it so turned it off/on again, nothing. Pressed F8 to try start it up in safe mode but it wont do that either. There is NO screen at all coming up. If i cant start it up in safe mode is it DEAD?
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off. When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message. the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes. the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.
