User Login To New Desktop Issue

Oct 19, 2010

This one has been hard to research, because all of the search terms are so common and generic. Windows XP desktop user new alternate login temp...Background: The PC in question has Win XP Home SP3. I recently reformatted the hard drive and restored the entire system including all updates, drivers, etc. Each person in my family has a logon. After doing the reinstall of Windows and setting up the user accounts, I logged into each to set up their "My Documents" folder set and restore their files, etc. from backup (on a secondary hdd.) I also restored a few other personalizations like wallpaper and jumped through the "Welcome to Windows XP" hoops. When I was done, all user accounts were established and had been logged into at least once if not more

Error C:Windowsdsr.dll - Change Or Login With A Specific Desktop User Profile

Jan 27, 2006

I seem to get an error message C:Windowsdsr.dll when windows is running and I attempt to change or login with a specific desktop user profile. Does anyone have any thoughts? I also noticed that the virus software, althought up-to-date with subscription and definitions, was disabled. This is an additional backup work station at the office of my employment and is used by many different people. One of those individuals must have disabled Norton about 45 days ago.

User Administrator - User Login Screen

Aug 30, 2005

In recently restoring my crashed machine, I noticed that when the machine was
idle, it would go back to the user login screen. I found this tedious as I
just wanted it to go to screen saver but stay within the user session. I ran
'control userpasswords2' and de-clicked 'Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer.' (It's a home computer so not worried). Now
when I reboot, it brings up a Windows login for Administrator and says,
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." I can bypass that
and log in as Owner or anybody else so it's more cosmetic than anything else.Question - who is this "Administrator?" The account doesn't show up under
User Accounts. 'Owner' is the Administrator. Do I care about this account
(which appears to be hidden? Should I allow it to log in under the covers? If
so, do I have to re-click 'Users must enter a user name and password, etc."

No User Login Screen

Jan 26, 2009

I have a Dell laptop that I have tried many times to password but it sort of doesn't work. The laptop has Windows XP Professional on it, Version 2002 with Service pack 2.My husband bought it from a buddy at work who's wife wanted a laptop, but then decided she didn't like it. She didn't delete her account so it's still under her name.I have set up a user account in my name on it and passworded it. When I reboot the laptop, it goes straight into "her" account. I want the screen where it gives me the User names so you have to type my password in order to even access the laptop. It always totally bypasses that screen.

I tried setting up a dummy account and turned on the Guest account and rebooted the laptop. I STILL don't get the User login screen.I really want this to work because for 1. the laptop is being used only for backing up personal family pictures and I'd really rather be able to password my children out of it and 2. when I go to my girlfriends' house, her mother seems to think she can just help herself to my laptop whenever she feels like it. I'd logged off - it's the only way to get the User login screen - but somehow she managed to bypass it. I KNOW the only way around it is to reboot the laptop, but she swears up and down she just opened the lid and the account was open.

Newly Assigned User - Now No Administrator Login

Jul 12, 2008

I recently assigned a new user (the first one) to an XP machine. Previously, as it started up, it prompted with "Administrator" and a password field (which I had left blank), and a message about being able to setup users once I logged in. Now, having assigned a user, all I get is the offering of the new user, and when clicking on that I get prompted for the password. When I type in the password, the desktop is nothing like what it used to look like when I went in through "Administrator" - the desktop image is gone and the shortcuts that were on the desktop are gone. And my drive mappings to my network are gone. How do I get back to the "Administrator" login screen? and/or assign the Administrator desktop to the new user?

Making Auto-login / Go To Switch User Screen

Apr 28, 2007

I currently have XP make me password login when I turn it on, but I'm just wondering, is there a way to have it automatically log me in, then go to the switch user screen? I ask this because it usually takes mine a while to load up to the logon screen, but then I have to go back and login before it works properly, so yeah, I'd just like to get it to log me in, load up, then got to the switch user screen so that I can go watch TV for half an hour, come back, and be ready to go.

No Login Screen - Screensaver / Desktop Tab?

Jul 15, 2008

I have a Sony Vaio VGC-RA810G (click here for a picture) and i am running Windows XP. About a month ago i was installing some programs on my computer and it didnt seem to like one of the programs that i had installed. It was being very slow and not responding most of the time so i restarted the computer and was attempting to go into safe mode then use "System Restore", but i must have pressed the wrong F key when i should have pressed F8. I cant really remember what my computer said to me but i got the message "Missing ******** *********" ([the **'s are the words i dont remember]) and the screen was just blank with that one error message on it. The only thing i was able to do was to use "Vaio Recovery Wizard". It all worked perfectly no problems with that, but when i was reinstalling programs i had and all that stuff i forgot to set my popup blocker on internet explorer to high. I was surfing the web and i got a popup, but i just closed it like you would normally do.

I have ZoneAlarm installed as my firewall so right away it asked me if two weird named EXE files could connect to the internet. I denied both of the files. The files were just random letters but one began with a b and the other began with an L something like "bdojvcodsi" and "Ljfiodjoidoo". I thought nothing of it and just continued what i was doing. After leaving my computer for a little, i came back and i saw a blue error message similar to the one here. the only thing is it would go away whenever i pressed a key or moved the mouse.......

No Desktop, Taskbar, Login Screen, Task Manager, Only Mouse Pointer?

May 26, 2007

I consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.

Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).

Log On My User Out Before Even Get To Desktop

Sep 7, 2007

I have a Dell 1.80 Ghz running Windows 2000 NT Professional. The main problem is that I cant get to the desktop anymore when I start my computer. The computer boots and gets to the screen where I type in my username and password to get to my desktop. It accepts my user and password, starting loading the desktop, gets as far as loading my background wall paper, and then the "saving user settings" dialog comes up and I am taken back to the initial user/password screen again automatically. The computer does this same thing in safe mode.

I was using the computer today and started having the "Auto Protect" application window come up frequently telling me I might have some sort of spyware. It was coming up more frequently than ever in the last day or two, and I'm not sure what triggered it.I also noticed that some of my program aliases would not work anymore. I would get an error if I tried to open certain programs telling me that the application could not be found any more. Very strange. Then I tried rebooting, and now I have the problem I described above. All of this makes me think I have some sort of virus. Seeing as I can't even get to my desktop or pretty much do anything on the computer, I don't know what to do!

After working on the IE 8 problem for a week, I finally decided to scrubbed the hard drive with zeros an accomplished a clean install. Same problem appeared again. I accomplished a Mem-Test on the memory without any problems.

Created New User Account / Now Desktop All Messed Up

Oct 17, 2006

My computer was working fine. I would turn on the computer and it'll go straight into my desktop and I'll see all my files and icons on the desktop. Just 2 days ago, my son decides to "create" his own user account and he happens to set it him up also as the "administrator". When ever we turn on the computer, it would go to a screen and it would ask us to select a user to log on as (only one avail, it's his). We'd click his user account and it goes to a desktop, however, there is only 2 icons (recycle bin and adobe reader), nothing else. Where are my files/icons? How do I fix it? I rather undo what he did but it appears that I can't delete his user account because he is the administrator.

Changing Resolution For User Accounts - Removing Desktop Files?

Feb 22, 2007

We've just purchased a new monitor for out PC with a better resolution than our previous one. Basically, my dad wants to have his user account set at 1280x768, whereas I want to use the best resolution of the monitor which is 1440x900.

On the previous monitor, I seemed to be able to make it so that different user accounts could have their own resolutions. However, when I've tried changing the resolution in my dad's account, when I go back to my account, it is set as my dad's resolution. If I change it back to mine, then my dad's account changes to mine too.

Is there a way I can make it so that each account can have their own resolution set?

installed a file manager for his mobile phone and it's put a folder on the desktop which I cannot seem to remove. I right click it but there is no delete option for it. Even when I open it, I can't find any options to remove it either. Does any one have any idea as to how I might be able to remove this folder from my desktop? It's appeared on all user accounts

Thanks for all the help in advance, everyone.
