Accessing Old User Desktop From Old HD

Dec 1, 2006

I have an old 80gb HD that has some old files I would really like to get back. I think something went wrong with the boot.ini or something but it will no longer boot. It still has all the files. I am now using it as a slave drive on my current system(XP PRO SP2). The problem is that I need the files off a pw protected user. It is my old loggin so I know the pw but it wont let me into it. I was thinking that if my current loggin was the same I might be able to access it but no such luck.

Accessing User-Specific Files From Old Hard Drive

Jul 16, 2005

I had my hard drive transferred to a new pc. I cannot access the numerous (and important!) files under Documents and Settings/My Username on the new pc. Apparently, Windows has restricted access to those files since it does not recognize me on the new PC. The files all seem to be there (based on the info from the properties of the documents and settings folder), but I cannot see them. Both old and new pc use XP Home. How can I regain access to these files?

Accessing Desktop Files On Hard Drive

Jul 20, 2009

I am running windows xp sp2. My primary computer seems to have had a motherboard meltdown. Left on thursday, would not boot on friday. Cannot get to cmos, or anything. I removed the harddrive and put it in another computer to get work files off of the drive and transfer them to server. On boot it says"error loading operting system".I hooked up the hard drive as a slave and used explorer to go through and get the files. I can see the Desktop directory in documents and settings****desktop, but i get an access denied when i try to get to the files on desktop. I have tried using the Dos Command prompt and have the same result. I have booted in safe mode w/ prompt, same results. I have tried making a user profile with same name and passwords, no luck. These are files on the desktop, not shortcuts. Does anyone know how i can copy these files?

Log On My User Out Before Even Get To Desktop

Sep 7, 2007

I have a Dell 1.80 Ghz running Windows 2000 NT Professional. The main problem is that I cant get to the desktop anymore when I start my computer. The computer boots and gets to the screen where I type in my username and password to get to my desktop. It accepts my user and password, starting loading the desktop, gets as far as loading my background wall paper, and then the "saving user settings" dialog comes up and I am taken back to the initial user/password screen again automatically. The computer does this same thing in safe mode.

I was using the computer today and started having the "Auto Protect" application window come up frequently telling me I might have some sort of spyware. It was coming up more frequently than ever in the last day or two, and I'm not sure what triggered it.I also noticed that some of my program aliases would not work anymore. I would get an error if I tried to open certain programs telling me that the application could not be found any more. Very strange. Then I tried rebooting, and now I have the problem I described above. All of this makes me think I have some sort of virus. Seeing as I can't even get to my desktop or pretty much do anything on the computer, I don't know what to do!

User Login To New Desktop Issue

This one has been hard to research, because all of the search terms are so common and generic. Windows XP desktop user new alternate login temp...Background: The PC in question has Win XP Home SP3. I recently reformatted the hard drive and restored the entire system including all updates, drivers, etc. Each person in my family has a logon. After doing the reinstall of Windows and setting up the user accounts, I logged into each to set up their "My Documents" folder set and restore their files, etc. from backup (on a secondary hdd.) I also restored a few other personalizations like wallpaper and jumped through the "Welcome to Windows XP" hoops. Desktop Icons Always Disappear After First User Is Selected

Aug 12, 2009

Desktop ICONS always disappear when first user is selected, Computer motherboard is ASUS M3A78PRO/w AMD Phenon Quad Core 9500 CPU with 4GB Memory. OS is XP Pro. I am utilizing the on-board graphics card only. When I initially built and installed the XP-Pro Operating System, the system installed and worked perfect. After approximately six (6) months of use, and while attempting to utilize IE 8, the pop-up screens would only display in white, without any information. After working on the IE 8 problem for a week, I finally decided to scrubbed the hard drive with zeros an accomplished a clean install. Same problem appeared again. I accomplished a Mem-Test on the memory without any problems.

Created New User Account / Now Desktop All Messed Up

Oct 17, 2006

My computer was working fine. I would turn on the computer and it'll go straight into my desktop and I'll see all my files and icons on the desktop. Just 2 days ago, my son decides to "create" his own user account and he happens to set it him up also as the "administrator". When ever we turn on the computer, it would go to a screen and it would ask us to select a user to log on as (only one avail, it's his). We'd click his user account and it goes to a desktop, however, there is only 2 icons (recycle bin and adobe reader), nothing else. Where are my files/icons? How do I fix it? I rather undo what he did but it appears that I can't delete his user account because he is the administrator.

Changing Resolution For User Accounts - Removing Desktop Files?

Feb 22, 2007

We've just purchased a new monitor for out PC with a better resolution than our previous one. Basically, my dad wants to have his user account set at 1280x768, whereas I want to use the best resolution of the monitor which is 1440x900.

On the previous monitor, I seemed to be able to make it so that different user accounts could have their own resolutions. However, when I've tried changing the resolution in my dad's account, when I go back to my account, it is set as my dad's resolution. If I change it back to mine, then my dad's account changes to mine too.

Is there a way I can make it so that each account can have their own resolution set?

installed a file manager for his mobile phone and it's put a folder on the desktop which I cannot seem to remove. I right click it but there is no delete option for it. Even when I open it, I can't find any options to remove it either. Does any one have any idea as to how I might be able to remove this folder from my desktop? It's appeared on all user accounts

Thanks for all the help in advance, everyone.

CPU Jumps When Accessing Mapped Drive

Mar 4, 2007

I have a brand new install of XP Professional on a Dell with a 3.2Ghz CPU, with 1.5Gig of RAM in it. I setup a mapped drive to my file server from this XP workstation (all this is runing on my home network). As soon as I access this share and start to drill down through its folders, the CPU jumps to near 100%, rendering it useless. The task manager shows explorer.exe and system as being the two biggest resources of the CPU. If I close the share, the CPU doesn't let go. However, if I click on "disconnect" on that network drive, it lets go and returns to normal.I have disabled my anti virus and firewall to rule that out, but it keeps happening anyways. usually I just reboot to get back the CPU, but as I said above, last time I tried just disconnecting from the mapped drive, and that worked. What could be the issue? I never had any issues on my Windows 2000 machine accessing this same share, what could be XP's problem? I spent hours setting this machine up, but I am about ready to go back to 2000.

Accessing An IDE Raid To Copy Files

Feb 9, 2008

I am trying to get files off of a computer that has an IDE raid setup. The IDE Raid is on the motherboard and I have all the drivers. Win XP is installed but will not boot.I have tried many of the MS fixes that deal with XP stopping during the boot up. Frankly I do not care about getting XP to run again on this system, but I do need some files as the owners did not back up their files.I used the XP CD to boot up the computer, F6 to enable raid and gained access to the hard drive.I installed a second IDE drive in the computer to transfer the files to. Everything seemed fine. I could see both drives, look at any directory and so on. However, I was not allowed access to copy any files, make any directories, etc. Just to get to the raid drive in the first place I had to enter the admin, so shouldn't I have had permission on both drives? I also wanted to try just booting to a command prompt, but had no access to the raid drive that way.I tried UBCD Win XP to no avail for the same reason, no drivers for the raid so it just wasn't there.
