After my old lodger totally corrupted by pc with adult downloads and viruses, I have had to get it rebuilt. I now have a new lodger moving in, and she needs the pc for studying. I have set her a limited account up, but how do I restrict her from a) downloading and b) accessing my folders.I have tried the share /unshare, but when I log on her as her, I can still view my own folders. If I right click on one of my folders, and then go to properties/sharing, it does say 'to share this folder with other users on the computer' drag to shared documents - I have not done this, so thoughtit would not be shared. Where it says' To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you can access, select the follwing box' - That box is greyed out, so I cannot do anything!

For security reasons, Microsoft does not allow parents (computer administrators) to check on, maintain, adjust or otherwise enter their kids' (limited users) XP profiles without either resetting their passwords or waiting for them to come home and being confrontational about it.Ideally I would like to be able to log on to a limited user account from my administrator account without tampering with anyone's passwords-resetting them or otherwise. Actually, I have little interest in the (step) kids' personal life and stuff. Alternately, perhaps you may help me with my ultimate goal: limiting screensaver activity:

I have created a second account for me (a limited on) in order not to use the lapton under the admin account. However, after I log-in to the limited, I can't connect to the internet. When I go the Network area in order to try and connect or set uo the connection to the Internet by setting up the connection I get a message saying that I do not have the right to change the settings. Where do I go in the admin account in odrer to set the connection to the Internet for the limited account?

I've recently setup a limited user account on a XPSP2 Home machine. The intent is to use it for internet and email. When I switch to this account, and try to setup, say, my email client, the configuration or settings do not stick. On a couple other apps too, when I click on them to start them, it's as if it's the first time they are being executed. I enter the info, apply or save, and when I shut the app and come back into it, the same thing happens. For instance; in the email client, each time I go in, the setup wizard starts and asks for my pop3 and smtp etc..I enter it, save, shut the app, come back in and the wizard starts again, asking for the same things.

I contacted Nero about the lightscribe icon not showing up in Nero Ultra 7 and these are the directions they sent me....where do you find local securitypolicy in Windows XP home edition??? How can I find the "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only". they have listed? Double-click on the entry "Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only". Choose the option "Disabled". Confirm this change by clicking on "Apply and "OK".

I have an old 80gb HD that has some old files I would really like to get back. I think something went wrong with the boot.ini or something but it will no longer boot. It still has all the files. I am now using it as a slave drive on my current system(XP PRO SP2). The problem is that I need the files off a pw protected user. It is my old loggin so I know the pw but it wont let me into it. I was thinking that if my current loggin was the same I might be able to access it but no such luck.

I was wondering if anyone could help me in solving a little problem that I overlooked.I had XP OS on C drive and my documents on D drive. I recently had to reinstall my OS on C drive from scratch due to a bug, trying to make sure that I installed it in the same manner.Everything proceeding fine, until I went to access my documents on D Drive. In the inital setup I had set security/privacy access to limit only me seeing my documents, now after reinstallation I can no longer access my documents due to it not recongnising me as the account holder or administator. I can access all other documents shared etc.. but not mine.

From my XP SP2 (Media Center Edition) computer, I can access shared folders on my other computers (a Vista, a W7, and another XP computer). However, those computers cannot access shared folders on this computer (the XP SP2 machine). The shared folders are visible from the other computers, but when they attempt to access them, they get a dialog box to log in with userid and password. I have tried various combinations of userid and password, including "thiscomputernameprimaryaccountname" with the associated password. Authentication fails.I am using simple file sharing.

I recently installed a program to block my internet at night so I can get back in to a normal routine. The only problem is I can simpley go in to task manager and end process and repair connection and i can do what I want again. I want to stop me from using computer at night so i can get in to a good happier routine. In order to stop me acessing program i passworded it with password i could not remember off top of my head, tried to make it as random as possible. but because i can just go in process and end it... its kinda pointless.
I left it so I can uninstall it because well there maybe a valid reason why I need to uninstall it sometime... and i know better then to never leave one safe clause. I know I wont uninstall it tho but because its so easy to just go to processes and end it... its just to easy. So I wanted away in which I can block processes from been closed or hide it so I can't close it like that.

I had my hard drive transferred to a new pc. I cannot access the numerous (and important!) files under Documents and Settings/My Username on the new pc. Apparently, Windows has restricted access to those files since it does not recognize me on the new PC. The files all seem to be there (based on the info from the properties of the documents and settings folder), but I cannot see them. Both old and new pc use XP Home. How can I regain access to these files?

Unfortunately my brother is a limited user and is unable to many things on the computer. Is there like a default administrator password? He is using windows XP home. When I restart the computer it has a log in screen where you type in a username and password, not the traditional windows xp login screen.

I'm able to run MSCONFIG just fine as administrator, but I can't run it as limited user. The message is "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account".But I'm pretty sure I've previously run MSCONFIG as limited user. Is my memory wrong, or is something wrong?

Decided to add limited accounts for wife & kids.
Every time the accounts are logged in to, they get the error message - Error - Access Denied. The process for this is LVCOMSX.EXE somethin to do with the logitech webcam me thinks.

I need a program to block certain actions on limited user accounts. I am the administrator on my computer, however my mom and sister use the computer as well. They have limited user accounts. My sister and my mom have accidentally screwed up some settings before, and deleted files and such, there better then they used to be, but i don't want to take any chances. I am looking for a program of some kind to block certain actions, such as right click properties on the start menu tool bar, etc. i have made there accounts have classic folders, i have hidden the my computer icon from the desktop and start menu so that they only see "my documents." however, because they have messed my system up before, i just want piece of mind and have a program block certain things that i select.

1. I have set an account as a limited user in Windows XP. It has to temporarily run as an administrator when he wants to install a program. Most of the time it works but I encountered a few cases where the programs have problems or simply doesn't run in limited user account. What can I do to fix or minimize those problems?2. Sometimes a program installs but only install on that user, in this case, it would be the administrator, so the limited-user account can't run that program. What can I do to instruct the program to install on all users?

Sometime today, after I installed 4 new MS updates, my wife's limited user account became corrupted. Windows cannot find her settings, even though her account still appears when we boot up. So it creates a TEMP user for her name. That lets her use the machine, but it breaks the link between her settings and where Windows should find all her documents and data files.
I tried to use System Restore but no matter which restore point I chose, System Restore told me, after trying to restore, shutting down, and restarting, that it was unable to restore to the point I chose. There was a system checkpoint this morning, which didn't work. There were 2 later points, created when I was downloading the latest updates, which I have installed, as I said. The most current restore point today was created when I ran Spybot S&D 1.6.0,
