Limited User Having Some Administrator Privileges?
Nov 10, 2006
I have verified that all updates available to Windows XP, have been installed I am attempting to create a Limited access account on a computer Unfortunately when I create the account, it still has access to some administrative features that it shouldn't. The limited account can install software, change firewall settings, and change internet security settings.
Operating system: XP home. When creating a user account for my husband with limited access, I lost my user account as administrator. My guest account has also disappeared. I cannot download or do anything because of the limited access that my husband has. How do I get back/show my user account with administrator access?
im trying to help my brother out with his computer. It used to be our family computer and when my dad gave it to my brother he deleted all users except my brother. Unfortunately my brother is a limited user and is unable to many things on the computer. Is there like a default administrator password? He is using windows XP home. When I restart the computer it has a log in screen where you type in a username and password, not the traditional windows xp login screen.
I just installed (clean) XP Pro and set up some user accounts.I'm familiar with Win2K and thought that XP would be similar with regard to user accounts, but it appears that's not true. When I go to user accounts, I only see limited user and administrator accounts. How can I set someone to power user or in between admin and user?
I didn't establish User a/cs when I first set up my PC. I have since done so but now I can't access some progs because they are for Admin. I have tried starting in Safe Mode pressing F8 but I get an error mssge - Keyboard error. This means that when I do get into Safe Mode I can't do anything to change the settings.
I am trying to run cmd.exe with admin privileges, but I get "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." I get this error on two of my three XP PCs. I was able to run this last week on at least one of the PCs where it is now not working. I can't find any obvious reason why it no longer works. Any suggestions what to check? ADDITIONAL INFO1. All three computers are running the same firewall/virus software. 2. All three are XP SP3 and at the same MS patch level.
I have used my own name as Administrator and deleted the original administrator account in my Xp. Now my bluetooth software refused to be installed and kept saying I do not have administrator privileges. Is there any way to revive the original one?
even though i am an administrator on my computer, i am treated as a user. i have no admin privileges including installing programs, viewing C:/programs files, or running McAfeethis started happening about a week ago, and it is the same for everyone but my dad, who for some reason seems to have all of his admin privileges
I ran some registry software and now I can't have administrator privileges, I don't know what happen. This happen since I ran that program. I try to created control panel, users and I see my own computer as a administrator, but still when I run any software ask me for administrator privileges, I don't have copy of my registry, so should I restore windows xp pro or reinstall fresh or what.
Computer I have came with Windows XP pro. It had one account available called Administrator. I wanted to change this and found it would not let me change the name. So I opened another account (with my name) and gave it administrator privileges. As far as I know, you can have more than one administrator account. Every thing seemed OK until I logged out. When I came to log back in, only one account (this time mine) was available.Problem is that there seems no way to get back in to the Administrator account. Since most of the files went to that account when I used the files and settings wizard, it effectively stops me using the files.
All of a sudden, I don't seem to be an administrator here any more. I've been trying to download some stuff that requires that I be an administrator on this computer to install. It so happens that I'm the only one using it. Could some setting have been inadvertently changed? I'd appreciate anything you can say or do to fix me up.
My wife inherited a DELL D600 notebook with Win 2000. The Administerator (user) was deleted. I upgraded to XP SP2 without knowing Administrator had been deleted. Administrator does NOT appear in SAFE MODE, nor can Administrator be used to boot the machine. Is there any way to add Administrator with privileges to the system??
Our network consists of five Win XP computers networked to a separate server machine running on Linux with a SAMBA interface that provides IMAP e-mail service, full internet access, and full inter-communication between the five resident computers so any one of them can be used interchangeably by users. We have about 150 residents registered but only a fraction of those use the computers regularly.is there some Win XP permission that will allow us to access these settings. We really don't know whether our problem lies in the server, in the SAMBA interface, or some subtle difference in the way Win XP handles user privileges compared to Win 2000.
I have a family PC running XP Home with six user accounts. All are administrator accounts and I prefer to keep them that way. The PC is firewalled and has AV and anti-spyware SW and I try to educate my family in safe computing practices. My problem is that the 8, 11, and 15 y-o boys keep screwing up each others accounts (on purpose) by changing each other's passwords, or changing them to limited accounts. My 11 y-o for example, thinks his 8 y-o brother should not be allowed to install "Sponge Bob Whatever"; so he changes his account to limited. (Somehow he thinks it is ok though to install Limewire or Bearshare even after I tell him not to).Is there a way in XP Home to give users "Power User" privileges which will allow them to do most everything administrators can do, but not be able to access other user accounts?
For security reasons, Microsoft does not allow parents (computer administrators) to check on, maintain, adjust or otherwise enter their kids' (limited users) XP profiles without either resetting their passwords or waiting for them to come home and being confrontational about it.Ideally I would like to be able to log on to a limited user account from my administrator account without tampering with anyone's passwords-resetting them or otherwise. Actually, I have little interest in the (step) kids' personal life and stuff. Alternately, perhaps you may help me with my ultimate goal: limiting screensaver activity:
In all the years I've been running Windows, I never used the features provided in setting up Users Some of my friends and family have told me that care must be used to set up Users because the wrong setup can bite you or, you can lock yourself out of the logon if you're not careful.Where can I get a comprehensive guide? Folks are telling me I need to browse the Internet (I use Firefox) with a restricted user, rather than as Administrator, but the Windows Help is a bit esoteric about that.
I run across certain things that won't allow me to view (such as downloaded games) and I get a message saying
"There has been an unknown error! If you are running windows 2000, you may need a user with more privileges. Please contact your system administrator".
I am trying to uninstall a program and it says I need to have administrator or power user privileges to uninstall the program. When I set my computer up I set it up so it assumes I am logging on and I am the administrator. How do I get the privilege? It says I am an administrator in computer management, local users and groups.
I have a pc thats running XP home edition and I have set it up so that I am the admin and my two young children have limited user accounts, however when I set the kids accounts to limited the internet connection is cut off but if I put them back to admin all is fine! any ideas what I can do?
I'm able to run MSCONFIG just fine as administrator, but I can't run it as limited user. The message is "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account".But I'm pretty sure I've previously run MSCONFIG as limited user. Is my memory wrong, or is something wrong?
Just set up a new PC (Dell XPS Gen 4) and was running OK for a week with just myself as user with admin rights.
Decided to add limited accounts for wife & kids.
Every time the accounts are logged in to, they get the error message - Error - Access Denied. The process for this is LVCOMSX.EXE somethin to do with the logitech webcam me thinks.
I'm trying to set up a functional limited-user account (windows 2000 pro) that runs painlessly. I know it's a pain setting them up, or I am just really struggling. If there are any usefull guides anyone could provide a like to, or solutions,I am faily knowlagable with computers, but setting up functionable limited-user accounts is over my head. My goal is to run NOT as admin anymore.
I have a desktop running win xp pro.My 5 yr old son logs on using a user account made for him, which i have configured as a Limited User Account. But he still wreaks havoc on the computer, deleting files, changing many program features.I want to limit his powers on the computer. I just want him to play his games and visit few websites of my choice . I want to restrict his access for all other features of the computer. I dont want him to explore the computer by using my computer. I want only the documents in his My Documents to be accessible to him. I also dont want him to access the start menu.
I am looking for Limited user monitoring software so i can check the statics result what Limited user was doing.Im looking for software like Administrator spying on Limited user and what activity they are doing like Firefox, Settings, or anyelse because im decide to allow users to install their own program with Admin rights.
my girlfriends daughter deleted all the user accounts out her laptop (a compaq evo n800c running windows xp professional with service pack 3) except for one account that she changed to a limited access account so now you can only log onto that account and can make no changes to the computer its programs or create new user accounts.
I need a program to block certain actions on limited user accounts. I am the administrator on my computer, however my mom and sister use the computer as well. They have limited user accounts. My sister and my mom have accidentally screwed up some settings before, and deleted files and such, there better then they used to be, but i don't want to take any chances. I am looking for a program of some kind to block certain actions, such as right click properties on the start menu tool bar, etc. i have made there accounts have classic folders, i have hidden the my computer icon from the desktop and start menu so that they only see "my documents." however, because they have messed my system up before, i just want piece of mind and have a program block certain things that i select.
1. I have set an account as a limited user in Windows XP. It has to temporarily run as an administrator when he wants to install a program. Most of the time it works but I encountered a few cases where the programs have problems or simply doesn't run in limited user account. What can I do to fix or minimize those problems?2. Sometimes a program installs but only install on that user, in this case, it would be the administrator, so the limited-user account can't run that program. What can I do to instruct the program to install on all users?
In recently restoring my crashed machine, I noticed that when the machine was idle, it would go back to the user login screen. I found this tedious as I just wanted it to go to screen saver but stay within the user session. I ran 'control userpasswords2' and de-clicked 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.' (It's a home computer so not worried). Now when I reboot, it brings up a Windows login for Administrator and says, "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." I can bypass that and log in as Owner or anybody else so it's more cosmetic than anything else.Question - who is this "Administrator?" The account doesn't show up under User Accounts. 'Owner' is the Administrator. Do I care about this account (which appears to be hidden? Should I allow it to log in under the covers? If so, do I have to re-click 'Users must enter a user name and password, etc."
Sometime today, after I installed 4 new MS updates, my wife's limited user account became corrupted. Windows cannot find her settings, even though her account still appears when we boot up. So it creates a TEMP user for her name. That lets her use the machine, but it breaks the link between her settings and where Windows should find all her documents and data files.
I tried to use System Restore but no matter which restore point I chose, System Restore told me, after trying to restore, shutting down, and restarting, that it was unable to restore to the point I chose. There was a system checkpoint this morning, which didn't work. There were 2 later points, created when I was downloading the latest updates, which I have installed, as I said. The most current restore point today was created when I ran Spybot S&D 1.6.0,
