Start Programs Dont Open - Freezes Up - Programs Unstable
Jun 5, 2005I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

May 22, 20072005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.

Oct 14, 2010I have Win XP Home with SP#3.My wife and i each use individual accts, user ids etc.For no reason I can understand suddenly when i click on one of my desktop shortcuts to open a website...e.g. Facebook, Yahoo etc..instead of automatically opening the specific site I get the box which asks which program i want to use to open the site.It is usally always Int.Ex. and at the bottom of the box there is a checkbox to indicate that when you open that same site in the future it should always be opened using IE, but when i go to open the site again i have to again each time indicate i want to use IE to open it. The problem is that this error already occurred and i cant access my windows at all. I have a mac computer with bootcamp (so it has both a mac and pc harddrives), the pc harddrive being the one that has this problem and that i cant access. Unfortunately, I do not have the original XP CD so that's probably not an option... Is there any way I can fix this problem without the CD, or is it absolutely necessary?

Sep 8, 2006My computer got in stand by/hibernate mode, my dad dont know much about computers so he decide to turn off using the power botton while my windows xp sp2 was on stand by mode, now my computer is dead, when i turn it on my monitor ( xerox flat screen) says no signal , i cant make it come back from stand by/hibernate mode, my friend told me if i turn it off on this modes then my windows wont recognice the monitor, keyboard (usb) and mouse (usb),
when i turn it on the red ligh is always on, reset button dont work. Monitor dont recive signal.If i disconect the power cable, when i conect it back it turn on itself without clicking power boton.Only way to turn it off is holding the power Boton. i doubt the mouse/keyboard are recognized by windows.
Start Puter First The Mouse Dont Work Any More
Oct 8, 2006when I try to start puter first the mouse dont work any more. I had a Logitech MX 510. IT lights up but wont work. Installed a Radio shack mouse worked for a little it. Then it shuts down too. I try to start computer and tap on F8 key or DEL key sometimes it works an sometimes not if it works I am good for a little bit. 15min to 30 min then lock up. If i get into safe mode its ok until about the same 15min to 30 min. If F8 and DEL keys dont work It starts the process and then gets to floppy disk and fails. It say Floppy Disk Fail (40). I have checked and the fans are working and thats not a problem Hard drives work and 1.5 GB ram and thats ok too. So stumped and wondering if I can fix it or not.

Apr 4, 2005How do i get to the little menu where I can choose which applications automatically start up when Windows starts up and which do not? I forgot how to get to that menu but I remember that I could check and uncheck which things would start up, etc. The reason for this is because everytime I start windows, it tries to load my scanning software which I don't need started anymore due to the scanner not being connected at all anymore, and the un installation not going as properly as it should of.. but it just bugs me that it tries to connect to the scanner (with about 3-4 attempts) when Windows starts so this is my best option.

Sep 1, 2009It got infected with Windows Police Pro. After disabling that, there are several 'remnants' left over. The only way I can run any spyware/malware removal programs is to install it fresh. The program(s) will open, then it'll shut down 2 seconds into the scan. It even shuts down my registry cleaner as soon as it begins to clean (after it finds all the errors). All these programs simply terminate themselves. It does this in SafeMode as well.

Jun 5, 2008I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

Sep 17, 2005i was using spybot search an destroy to get rid of some spyware and it said id need to restart to fix one of the problems so i tried but now my aptop is not starting. because of the spyware on it im not bothered about fixing it properly and just want to format the c drive and start again but i need to copy some files from my documents to the second partition on the harddrive first. iv tried using the xp start disc using the repair current windows instalation with repair console thing but that wont let me access my docs. i also tried starting in safe mode with command prompt but it has the same problem as starting normaly it gets to the screen after the scrolling loader bar but before u get the list of acounts to log into then it shutsdown. this is the first time iv had a problem with my laptop before i just had a pc and would use a win98 boot disc to copy the files but my laptop doesnt have a floppy drive is it possible to use a memory stick or something similar.
