Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to do several things (such as click Settings/Control Panel/System or Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs) I get the DOS shell window flash for 1/8 sec or so and nothing else. If I read correctly this is flashing an error message too quickly to read or something along those lines.. I'm guessing this was caused by a program I used to overclock my system a while back or one I used to customize some setting or other and I don't remember exactly which one.

This only happens if I click on a folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem where my computer will spend anywhere from 5-10 seconds switching to a different window. It doesn't matter whether it is loaded or not. For instance, I'll have 2 MSN conversations open where I can see both at the same time, and no matter what I'm doing, it will take the same amount of time just to switch over to say "lol".
This is very annoying, because if an error comes up (in any program) that requires opening a new window, it will take 10 seconds to load, and then 10 seconds to respond to me clicking "ok". I am wasting so much time waiting, and it is becoming one of the most aggravating issues I've ever had.
This also applies to clicking on anything on the start bar at any time, minimizing, maximizing, or changing size to any window ever. It doesn't effect anything that happens within any programs itself that aren't window related.
I'm using XP and have 2 gb of RAM.

How can I start a program on Windows startup and set the window of the programm always on top. That means that no other program which starts as well on startup, can set his window activ. Just my program should always be on top.Is that possible with a VBScript?

I've never set up my computer to take passwords. I'm the only one that's ever used this computer. So I just click OK and only then does it go to the desktop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension XPS with 250GB hard drive (about 80GB free), 2GB RAM, a Maxtor 300GB USB external hard drive, and an HP Scanjet 5590. Ever since I installed the Maxtor drive and the HP scanner, the respective folders in "C:Program Files" open on the desktop every time I startup Windows. I find this annoying. Under File Explorer folder options view dialog box, I tried unchecking "Restore previous folder windows at logon," which did not help. I looked in my startup folder, but there is no shortcut to these folders there. I checked the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" but I cannot seem to find a reference to these folders relating to startup. Perhaps I missed something. Should I be looking elsewhere (in the registry or somewhere else)?

It stops half way and another window pops up that says Installation error file not found. A required installation file SKU112.CAB could not be found. Original installation source required. If you installed Microsoft office standard edition 2003 over your computer network please browse to the installation source on your computer. Also a window popped up that says Microsoft word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. I don't have the cd its lost. This just started doing this about a month ago. I can't open any files through microsoft office word or power point.
The IEXPLORE.EXE still reside im my PC memory after I close the IE window.
With task mamanger, I can see there are many IEXPLORE.EXE running. But, I already close all of them.
I ran 3 ad-ware, spybot, MS antispyware. Removed all the spyware by those 3 spyware detector.
Computer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.

My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt.
