My XP Pro SP2 PC is now doing something rather strange.Instead of open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens a command prompt window, to the path of the folder, when the folder icon is clicked. This only happens if I click on a folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Clicking on a folder in the left pane opens the folder in the right pane, as it should.I have the same problem with any shortcuts to folders on my Desktop. Instead of opening the folder, it opens a commnad prompt with the path to the folder.I know this has something to do with the File Types tab.If you click Tools, Folder Options, in Windows Explorer. However, when I go into the Advanced properties of "File Folder", I can only Add, I can't Edit or Remove. And yes, I am logged on as a member of the Admins group.
Heres what happened I wanted to change system wide folders Icons so I went into Folder Options>File Types>File Folders >>Advanced and attempted to changes the icons in doing so somthing went wrong and now when I double click on any folder (except hard-drives and My Documents) it will open up in the command prompt. I must right click and select OPEN for it to work.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. For the last few days, whenever I click a folder it opens a Search window instead of an Explorer window, as I prefer. I went to Tools > Folder Options > File Types then highlighted "File Folder" and clicked the Advanced button.
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
This only applies to my folders, but everytime I left-click them, it gives me the search window instead of opening it. I don't remember changing it to do this, is there a way to change to back to Open?
When i double click on a folder in say "my documents", a search window opens instead of opening an open window. If i right mouse click on a folder the word "Search" is shown at the top of the list in Bold instead of "Open". how can i fix this?
When I try and open My Pictures for example it opens up command prompt for that folder. I've been messing about in My Computer trying to change folder icons. But some how I've managed to stop opening fodlers.
I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?
Previously I have been doing work that requires me to unplug my network connection and I need to check my IP address each time I plug it in again. I guess it's not set for static IP.Anyways to do this I usually go into Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'Now however I just get "'ipconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".The directory is the same as its always been, I can change it but it doesn't seem to matter what it is.I've checked many other posts and is there something possibly wrong with my PATH variable? I used the command 'echo %PATH%' and it works, the list it gives is very garbled however.
I noticed a lot of services running under one of my svchost.exe processes when I ran the "tasklist /svc" command in the Command Prompt. Here's what I got: AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, DHCP, dmserver, ERSvc, EventSystem, FastUserSwitchingCompatibilty, helpsvc, HidServ, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, Netman, Nla, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon, SENS, SharedAccess, ShellHWDetection, srservice, TapiSrv, Themes, TrkWks, W32Time, winmgmt, wscsvc, wuaserv, WZCSVC I'm not at all sure if any of those are real threats
I have Windows XP on my computer, and when I try to ping something through the command prompt (command.com), this shows up:Running tracert also has the same problem. If I try running ping or tracert through cmd.exe, it stalls and doesn't do anything. I have to close the program because it doesn't respond.I can use ipconfig in both cmd.exe and command.com. Do I have a virus on my computer, or is there a way to repair the command prompt?
Still getting the dos prompt shutdown command box after scanning and removing malware, spyware, trojans and everything else you can think of. Here is what it looks like. C:/windows/system32/cmd.exe
I have Windows XP Home and for some reason, all of a sudden I am unable to run any kind of commands in the Command prompt under Start - Programs - Accessories. I used to be able to run things like system file checker and ipconfig but for some reason I cannot now. Could DOS be corrupted or am I just accessing things wrongly. Last time I tried to run IPCONFIG I received a message that said "IPCONFIG is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program"....Also when I open up the command prompt it says C:Documents and Settings Username.
I need to open the stupid command promt thingy to use certain commands for this retarded isp to get my broadband to work,.however my problem is that when i goto run and type in "cscript.exe" it opens and closes straight away.
i edited some high and low filters from my reg trying to get xp home to find my cd burner. now i have no mouse or keyboard fnction when i boot into safe mode can you do a reg restore from a safe mode command prompt ?
I have windows XP Home installed on the computer. It will show the micropc page, go into the safe mode/normal mode/last good settings/boot with command prompt/ boot with networking screen, and no matter what you choose, it just resets again and ends up at the same screen..
It always starts with (c:documents and settingsmark>) is this how it is supposed to start out.Every time I type a command it never works. I want to type this- tasklist /m /fi "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:undll32.txt because my pc would not let me shut down kept saying rundll32.exe was not responding. Earlier I clicked on windows card space because I had not seen it before to see what it was and it started the service, when I clicked on it again it said it was to busy to answer my request.I never heard of such! It uses rundll32.exe, I think.I finally hit "end now" and rebooted, now I got 2 rundll32.exe's.I found that command on Ramishes site under "whats the suspicious Rundll32.exe" http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rundll32.htm Anyway I thought cmd should start with "c:" and thats it?
Hey! I am having a big problem with my command Prompt. Everytime I try and open a program that uses it, the prompt appears on the screen but disappears in a split second. It's like a quick flash. Now, when I open the prompt by itself by going to it in "Start---All Programs---Accessories---Command Prompt, it works fine. But I can't do hardly anything from there.

I tried to get rid of Win XP Pro on partition 2, which it looks like I did. Now I have partition 1 and it has Windows Home Edition on it. I think maybe I have done something incorrectly. Shouldn't this drive c be one big drive now? I just see drive c, which doesn't really have that much room on it. Do I have to format the drive and start all over? I don't understand. I have instructions on how to edit boot.ini, but when I followed the instructions, the command prompt doesn't recognize bootcfg /?, saying there is no such file. If I have to format and start all over, I will.
when I give the command gmake.exe win32 where win32 is the target destination. It throws the following error: gmake target=WIN32 DIRECTORY=win32 portable copyrite headrlib argfile postlinkgmake[1]: Entering directory `C:/optv_sdk32_gnu_cd'perl utils/check_dir.pl portable/win32 gmake --no-print-directory -C portable WI N32'gmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.need to have read write permission for the win32 directory as rite now it shows as read only.
I want to run a chkdsk c: /f /r /x from a command prompt but NOT have it ask if I want to run it at next reboot. I just want it to run without a y/n input. Is there any such way to do this?
I have no idea how it happened, but every time I try to open a partition from the task bar or from My Computer, the "command prompt"opens.I have to "right click" and select open.Very annoying, and I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I'm running Win XP SP2.
Although I am not a computer wiz, I did manage to format the harddrive on my old computer by writing format C:, after restarting in MS-DOS while running Windows 98. With Windows XP I don't find that option. I can get to the Command prompt C:, but it won't let me format the harddrive.Any assistance with this would be much appreciated, I am trying to re-format and re-partition.
Hey guys i have had quite the fatal loss of functionality with my XP Install, so i have thrown in my recovery cd and gotten to a command prompt, but when i try to run system restore no luck, i am using %systemroot%system32 estore strui.exe and hitting enter but a this command is not recognized error pops up.
Im not actually gonna do it, but I have a Windows 95 install CD Rom and I put it in my computer (XP operating system). It said something like "run with MS DOS" which I tried using the "command prompt" thingie and it did NOT work. How would I go about running MS DOS to get 95 to install [if i choose to]?
I have just gotten a second hand computer that has had it's hard drive cleaned out. Trying to load the OS, I first loaded win98se, and then XP.What I did not know was that 98SE loaded in a 2gb partition, without me partitioning the drive. Then loaded XP into the main partition. Now, there are various faults.I have tried to run fdisk, both in drive c: (the partition with 98x) and drive e: (the partition with XP)Neither will allow me to run fdisk to clear the hard drive and start again. I have tried all possible commands as per my old MS-DOS book. It states it cannot find fdisk either in command prompt or run.
I opened the command prompt and it was fine.I opened the command prompt and it opens *very briefly* and then closes.I've tried to open it many ways-from the start menu, from the run command, from the actual program file.but it all does the samething.Opens for about 1 second and then closes again.
