I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Compaq/Presario desktop. The XP was pre-installed and so I have no boot disks. I hope I never need it, but just as a precaution, I made a Boot disk using a freeware program "PE Builder". The process seemed to go ok, but there was a warning that "building from an OEM version of Windows can mean trouble..."

In my bios it is set up to CD is first boot and HDD is second I dont have a floppy drive and only 1 hardrive...I do not have the original windows xp pro installation cd, but I do have a full unused version of windows xp home edition installation cd and I put that in and booted off of that it started loading up like its supposed to then I got to the screen that said to start installing windows xp press enter so i did that then it went to the agreement thing and said press f8 to aggree to these terms i did that and it braught up a new screen saying
View 11 Replies View Relateda friend asked me to install a new hard drive for him because his crashed. So i purchased a new hard drive (maxtor 60 gb) set out to partition and format the drive, using a win 98 boot disk. I partitoned the drive ( for large volume drive.) Formatted the drive ( format c: /s ) to include system files.and proceeded with Os install Windows 2000. Everything went as smooth as silk... the when install finished, I was prompted to remove the disk from cd rom and complete installation with the onscreen prompt. I removed disk, clicked finish and the computer rebooted upon loading, when it went to start windows it said DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
I put the Win 2K disc back in and hit enter. It started windows perfectly no errors at all... then I took disk out re-started ( to check system stability) and back to the same error message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I of course freaked out, I feel like an idiot cause I cant get this thing to work right. tried reformatting without the sytem files, re-partioning tried win 98, winXP, nothing same stuff! So I talked to a pal got a hard drive wipe program off the net "killdisk", wiped the drive and tried to reinstall Win 2K, same problem.
I am having to reinstall XP - the setup starts and then reformats the hard drive. After it has done that it won't start the program installation it just keeps looping and reformatting the hdd
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having probllems installing Windows XP, first of all the installation is unusually slow, it has more than 5 hours installing. Then i have a boot error from Windows NOT from the BIOS, i have tried getting into the Repair Console an using FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, unsuccesfully; removed every suspecious setting on my BIOS..... The installator copies small parts, copy 1% or 2% and stops for a while (I think it is decompressing the files, but that slow!?). After that i get a booting error (I dont remember what does it says; i will post it later, when my 4th attemp ends).

I recently had a bad crash, and corrupted my hard drive.The recovery disk does not work.I need an installation disk to reinstall my system.Can I get one from somewhere? As I understand it, if I go to a shop and buy a Win XP installation disk, I'm really paying for the licence.The disk itself is a trivial expense.I have already paid for a licence for XP. But I don't have the disk to install it.I don't want to have to buy a new copy and pay for a licence which I already own.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual Hard Disk installation with my normal XP installation on C: and a second minimal XP installation on D:While booted from C: I wish to make a full backup of the D: drive, such that I in time can revert easily to this installation after format D, or perhaps install it on a new hard disk.I intend to save it on a sub directory on C: for compression and burning on a DVD.How can I most simply do this? Would a simple file copy get everything as I have not booted from the D: drive, there should not be any locked files?If not, what would work?Would XP backup get everything?Any freeware programs that would work?I am sure Norton Ghost would do it, but don't want to spend dollars if I can avoid it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've spent about half the day building my new PC - a Windows XP Pro 64-bit box. I've installed the hardware and it is recognized by the BIOS on my Gigabyte PE45 UD3L motherboard.. The next step was to install the OS, a 64-bit version of Windows XP Pro. All went well until the installation program prompted me to reboot. I received the message: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I've done this four or five times now, with and without the installation CD loaded. If the CD is loaded, the installation program tries to copy the files to the hard drive all over again. I went along with this once, thinking maybe the first time some driver had been corrupted. I have also changed the boot order in the BIOS, with first boot to the HD. I have reset the Fail-Safe Defaults in the BIOS. There are two hard drives in the PC, 320GB SATA Western Digitals. One of them has not been partitioned; the other was partitioned by the Win XP installation program.

I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 2 hdds on my system and windows xp crashed and would not recover from main drive so in an effort to save my data I loaded windows on secondary drive which worked, and gave me access to the old drive, all files were in tact and so I tryed to use windows recovery on winXP cd to no avail. When I try to boot from the original drive I get "boot disk failure, insert system disk and press enter" The thing that makes no sense is that I have rewritten the boot sector and mbr I also used the automatic recovery feature on the windows install disk and all looked like it went fine but still no boot

When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems- I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one. Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work. Am I missing something? Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this? I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.
first i get the HP blue screen. I tried F1, but i dont see my hard drive in the boot menu. I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.

However, I came to find out you can only have one computer assigned to each cd, unless I wanna buy another one, which is unecessary. I wanted to get rid of Vista and return to XP but the XP disc would not install because of multiple errors, such as missing ntldr.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install xp home on my bros comp. he used to have win 2000 pro. I backed everything up and formatted the hard drive. (75 gig ntfs). This worked great. I pulled his hard drive out and put it in my comp (secondary) I then installed xp on it. This went fine, I was even able to boot all the way to xp. The problem comes in when I tried to move the hard drive back to his comp. I could not boot past the compaq screen. I got the error message

I am trying to install a second copy of XP Pro on my system. I have the first installation on my first hard disc which is partition C: . I have another hard disc which has two partitions D: and Z:. D: has my data and Z: (20gb) is going to be for testing programs and settings and such without installing them on my main disc.
I loaded my XP Pro CD into the optical drive and went through the menus to install a new OS on partition Z. I did a quick format of partition Z in NTFS format. Installation proceeded and the computer rebooted just like usual. Then as it got to the preparing windows installation screen it froze. Just stopped. I restarted and it tried to resume but would freeze immediately again. I checked the boot.ini file and it is just like it should be. With both OS listed. I tried doing this three times and I got the same results each time. My original OS still works fine. I am considering completely reformating the partition and removing all traces of the installatiuon from the boot.ini file but if anyone has any other ideas that are easier I would like to know.
I installed Windows XP Pro over my Windows XP home a few days ago. My Windows XP Pro seemed to be working fine except it didn't feel or acknowledge my built in speakers and various other hardware. My dad said this might stem from the fact that the Windows I have (being from 2001) is older than my laptop. He suggested I DL the service pack onto on desktop computer, put it on a disk and open it on my laptop and install. I did that, and everything seemed to go fine until I restarted my PC as I usually do when I install new software. My laptop told there had a been a error that Windows was failing to boot properly due to some failed installation of software or failed hardware installation. It had a few options like "start with the last known configuration of windows that worked on your computer" so I did that. And I tried the other options too. But after a few screens of the usual booting up stuff my laptop just goes to a black screen and I can't get away from it. Windows Support won't help me so I'm asking you guys.

So now I'm stuck with this:I've tried running eveysingle usable option in the repair window but none worked. I've even tried replacing the BOOTMGR via CMD in the repair window with the Windows Vista Disc but still nothing.And whenever I try to do the install, once it gets to the last step. It tells me something like this:"Cannot move onto next steop, issue doing the install blah blah blah. Windows will not restart something something."

Well, that sort of thing is beyond me. But first, my system and how I got into this mess:
Trying to get rid of the screen that prompts you on boot-up to select an OS and counts down the seconds, I went from My Computer>Properties>Advanced and unchecked the first box, the one that has a place to the right where you say how many seconds to display the OS choice. I had changed that choice to "0" many times, but eventually the choice screen always came back, so I got the idea of unchecking the whole box. Then--I forget exactly which part of Properties this was in--I found the two OSs listed. They were the same, except that the one that was selected had a few words after it that began with "No"--maybe "No selection"? (This problem of having to make a choice on boot-up started when the computer was new and something went wrong and a Dell technician had me reinstall the OS.) I thought maybe I could get rid of the annoyance by selecting the other OS, and did it.....
