View 12 Replies View RelatedI already converted my HD from FAT32 to NFTS. I ran the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:" and it shows my cluster size of 4096 KB. BootIT NG also confirms the 4KB cluster size.So..Is that all I needed to do? Is there an advantage of formatting a HD directly as NTFS? Is the convert command (with the 4KB cluster size) enough or will a re-format give better security, performance etc.

Ive recently purchased a used 80gb external portable HD for use with my new USB car stereo head unit. The manufacturers state that the H/U will only recognize the FAT32 file system. Hence I went about formatting (it came formatted) the drive as it came with the NTFS system. When I prepare to format the drive via disk management, it only gives me the option of an NTFS format and no FAT32.

Failing in several attempts to recover any of the affected files, I resorted to various formatting procedures including Low-level formatting. RAW file format resulted and now I need an NTFS file format to be able to use the drive!

Yesterday I decided to change computer cases so I decided to transfer everything to the new case. I checked and tripple checked the hardware hook up. Every button and light works properly. When I turned on the comp, it would try to load and then it would turn off and restart on me. Thats fine, I figured I could use a format. So i put in the Original XP CD to format. Took me to the usual blue screen where it loads its drivers at the bottom, however after it loaded the Press F6 to load Raid drivers and Press F2 to do whatever, it froze on me. I can't understand why. BIOS loads everything, and it recognizes everything. I tried the whole put in the windows 98 or ME boot disk, but it would not load the drivers and then it would load from the XP cd. And yes it was set to boot from A: drive first.
Just formatted my computer, and now i want to install my windows, but when i am installing it, installation does not copy all files. setup canot copy the file: comctl32.dll and after installation i get a message winlogon.exe unable to locate component. and nothing happens after.

The second disk is installed using NTFS dynamic disk. Last weekedend I formated the XP disk, and installed XP again. After installing, the second disk comes up as "unreadable" dynamic disk. Is there a way to make it readable? I haven't done anything to it, so all the data should be there.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhile in XP I ran PQBoot from the Partition Magic 7 Start Menu, it loaded a command window and asked which O/S I wanted to load - foolishly I entered 2 for Red Hat 9 and pressed enter. (Dumb I know, and changing my mind 1 microsecond later was still too late.)When it rebooted it said "Autocheck not available" and rebooted.
I booted the XP CD and chose the second recovery option but the list of partitions had at the top a partition that was not C:Windows, I can't remember exactly what it said but used drive I: and some other description. So I exited without doing anything to do more research.I booted Knoppix 3.7 live Linux CD and that reassuringly showed all the drive partitions still where they should be especially hda1 my Windows partition.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy son couldn't find the original XP cd that came with his Systemax, so we bought a new XP Pro OS and installed it. While I was working on the connectivity issue, we found the original XP cd. Since I had not activated the XP Pro, I'd like to switch to the original XP and save the new one for a future laptop.
But, when I went to install the original, I didn't seem to have much of a choice because it was about to install the original on the same partition as the XP Pro . . . so I quit, and tried to format the HDD again, but since I was using the Command Prompt, MS said that the disk was already in use so that I couldn't format it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with my 400GB HDD not displaying correctly - it displays as 127GB - in a new install of Windows XP on a seperate drive. My original setup was as follows:400GB SATA HDD with Windows XP as the Operating System plus Data - Single Partition - NTFS. 300GB SATA HDD with purely data - Single Partition - NTFS.I bought a new HDD today (SATA 320GB) and installed it in the PC. The original XP install saw it was installed and offered formatting options from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management - no formatting options were taken.I then installed Windows XP (non-SP2 install, SP2 has been installed afterwards along with Video Card and Motherboard drivers) to the new HDD without removing the old drives first.
