View 4 RepliesThis is the problem I'm faced with and don't know what to do from here. After deleting current partition and then formatting in NTSF file system, it goes through the process of preparing for installation. When it reboots, it says the following:"couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)"If I take the XP CD out it just has blank screen with blinking cursor in the top left corner.
View 11 Replies View RelatedWith W98/W95B you could easily use a tool to convert FAT16 to FAT32 from within windows and not lose the data (most of the time anyhow) that was on that drive/partition.Is there any tool to convert FAT32 to NTFS without wiping (formatting) the drive/partition? I haven't been able to locate any tools to do this with and so far have been moving/copying the data I want to save on a partition to another partition and then right clicking the partition I want to convert and choosing FORMAT to NTFS instead.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running XP Media Edition on a BRAND NEW Computer I hooked up today. I took an existing NTFS External Hard drive and plugged it into a vacant USB port. The new PC does not like this external drive. When I boot the light on the front of the drive turns amber and when I go to My Computer it does not appear. If I power down the drive it will finally appear in My Computer but when I try to access it there is only one EMPTY folder. When I look at Properties it says there is 160G being used and the rest is free so the data is there. I can plug this same External drive into another PC and it reads just fine.

I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer. First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del. I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor?s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer. Same Error?. The thing I can?t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIt's a shame that me did a grave error. I am in terrible shock for that I did the following:
a) Installed Sun Solaris Express x86 Developer Edition with a 7.5 GB partition.
b) There is Windows XP SP2 on the first 20 GB partition.
I wanted to toggle boot flag by using DOS based fdisk after the Solaris installation. That's where me screwed up I ran a bootable Russian language DOS tools. Instead of toggling the boot flag (option 2 in the fdisk), me accidentally (while taking an overseas call) selected (option 1) the FAT formatting the existing NTFS partition (fdisk ran for 1%, then me immediately stopped and rebooted. But, already damage done My NTFS got screwed up by me.....
I have a subdirectory which shows as "Read Only". As administrator I access file properties window and change read only attribute. However, when I look at file properties again the "Read Only" attribute is still set
View 3 Replies View Relatedif someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. I then typed format c: again as i thought the origional format didnt happen. I then get a message saying that this disk is not able to format. the bootdisk also doesnt seem to load correctly now either.

Windows 98 was on drive C: XP was on D: They were set up so I could choose which one to boot to at start up I wanted to get rid of the 98 entirely, so I edited the boot ini, just removing the entry for windows 98 after restarting the computer, everything was fine....going directly to XP so I wanted to format the 98 drive so I could use it as additional storage, which I did using norton partition magic, I then shut down my computer......turned it back on.....and I get an error saying: NTLDR is missing.
Will a format of HD. and re-install xp create a new registry?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
Just turned on my comp and when it got to the part where it says 'Verifying DMI pool data'It says 'A disk read error occurred' then asks me to ctrl-alt-del I did that and I keep getting the same message. I have win XP pro. I tryed to start it with the XP pro disk in.

When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?

I booted the XP CD and chose the second recovery option but the list of partitions had at the top a partition that was not C:Windows, I can't remember exactly what it said but used drive I: and some other description.
