Recently I reinstalled XP Home Edition and XP Pro using a slipstreamed installation disk contain SP2 and the latest hotfixes. Following those installations I found that I could not easily access any Drive Image (pqi) files that were created under the newly installed operating systems. The images could be restored but only after booting from the Drive Image rescue floppies. I also was not able to open and explore any of those images using Drive Image ImageExplorer. Images created prior to these installation could be opened and restored within windows with Drive Image. To access the images created under the new OS installation I had start the Home Edition in the safe mode and the go the image file, right click and select security. Then I had to add my user name under services and then check full control. In the XP Pro system I had to disable simple file protection and then change the security settings in a similar manner. This all had to be done even though the user has full administrator rights. I've been using Drive Image 2002 for the last 2 years for backups on both Home Edition and Pro versions of XP so this behavior is something I believe is new an possible a result of security updates included in the new installations. I really need access to these images from within windows but I also need to retain simple files sharing on my XP Pro machine.

There are suddenly no options listed under the "Manage security settings for:" heading, just blank space, so I have no way to edit my Firewall, Antivirus or Windows Update settings from the Center. I opened services.msc and it shows the service started automatically.

I've forgotten but in a new install of XP-Pro,SP2 using NTFS on C: I don't have the Security Tab when I right click on a folder to setup sharing. I want this so I can set Permissions, etc. I have it on my other PC set up the same way but for some reason I don't on this new install.
What am I doing wrong? My username is a member of the Andministrators group.

I haven't been to this site for a while and I noticed I'm getting Security Warnings that my security settings has blocked of an ActiveX install. I know how to change those settings, but am reluctant to do so. Can anyone shed some light on this. I occasionally will get similar warnings on other sites, but it is consistant on this one. Once in a while IE6 will hang up on this and I'll have to got to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get out of it.

I am running XP Media Edition on a BRAND NEW Computer I hooked up today. I took an existing NTFS External Hard drive and plugged it into a vacant USB port. The new PC does not like this external drive. When I boot the light on the front of the drive turns amber and when I go to My Computer it does not appear. If I power down the drive it will finally appear in My Computer but when I try to access it there is only one EMPTY folder. When I look at Properties it says there is 160G being used and the rest is free so the data is there. I can plug this same External drive into another PC and it reads just fine.

Whenever I try to download something (example - the latest version of Acrobat Reader). I get a warning that says my Security Settings won't allow it. To my knowledge, nothing has been changed, and this has only been happening since I downloaded all of the latest Windows updates. I have no idea if this is related or how to fix this problem. Can someone give me a clue on what to do?

When I try to download perfectly safe stuff, I get a message saying that my security settings will not allow me download the file.I have followed advice about changing the settings etc, however when I follow any of the steps, it either won't let me perform the actions OR, the settings just bounce back to what they were before.I no longer have an Active-X bar along the top to help with downloading.I read that if these don't work:Try these two methods for changing the security..Try these two methods for changing the security settings.
Method #1
1. To lower the security setting in Internet Explorer:
2. In the browser's Tools menu, select Internet Options.
3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab.
4. In the "Select a Web content zone" control, click the Internet icon.
5. In the "Security level for this zone" area, reset security to Medium.
6. Click OK.
Method #2
1. Select Tools Menu from Tool Bar
2. Select Internet Options
3. Select Security tab
4. Select Custom Level button
5. Scroll down to Downloads
6. Under File Downloads - If the File Downloads is not disabled you will not be able to download files.
To enable file downloads check the enable option. My only other option is mucking around with registry keys, which being a puter dunce and haven't a clue about anything like that, I'm not going to attempt. Is there ANYTHING else I can try (nice easy steps) that it going to allow me download stuff that I want from the internet.

from where I can find an explanation of what all the different settings in Internet Options > Security > Custom Level mean? I've already looked in Windows Help and on the Microsoft website but I haven't had much luck.
All I want to do is switch off some of messages like 'Do you want to run this software?' when I click on a program I've just downloaded, but I don't know which options do what.

I need to download Macrommedia flash. However something is stopping the download. The security bar does not even appear to ask confirmation in fact nothing happens it just will not download. I have tried disabling spywareblaster and spybot in case there is a conflict there. I have disable the pop up blocker can anyone advise. I am running XP with SP2 and windows firewall. I have attached an image of the download section which has a red x in a box which I assume is disabling an image or something.

My home computer hard drive died. Critical data was backed up, so I didnt lose anything important, but Im having trouble with my replacement computer.I had another serviceable WinXP computer, two years old, that had never been connected to the internet, so job one after putting it on my desk was to download AVG antivirus. I did that. But when I tried to update the virus database, AVG Control Panel said the connection failed, and I couldnt download the updates. (I can access the internet via IE7 just fine, which of course I dont want to do without adequate virus and spyware protection.) And when I checked my Security Settings, it says that the firewall is turned OFF. When I try to turn the firewall ON, the first error message says:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service? When I click Yes, the next error message says:Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.Obviously I need instructions from a print or online manual to fix more than just the firewall problem. But Im not sure where to start looking, and what questions to ask when I get there. Some Windows users forum? This forum here? Where do I start?

When I clik on the MMA Presentation I receive the following error: "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click here for options" The only thing that appears is the Information Bar. It won't allow me to clik on any options. I tried opening the webinar presentation on my laptop and it worked fine. They are both using Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. I went into Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Security settings and changed the Active X prompts to mirror those in the laptop. But it still won't allow viewing of the presentation. In doing a Google search, one person said to look at a Microsoft support doc, and try Method# 4, Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services. I tried that but it still did not correct the problem.

The settings button is greyed out. How can I fix this? Also, where can I get a USB driver? Just USB driver, modem is connected by the USB cable and sometimes I can hear this sound in winXP that its disconnected and connected again(the sound you get when you unplug/plug in a USB device). After a while of plugging /unplugging, my internet connection just disappears. The modem is working properly, I think theres something wrong with the USB driver or something.I plugged in my printer(also USB) and nothing happens, everything that uses USB doesn't work at all.

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.
Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

I cant deleted this file on my desktop. It is an empty file(0 bytes), I tried renaming it and tried deleting it in safe mode. still I get " Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." I did a search for the file and nothing shows! not even the actual file that is on my desktop. So used "registry cleaner" to see if it will delete it...nope. I tried safe mode again and the same problem. I ran AVG, Norton, Escan, Hijack, all came clean. nothing wrong.

Im doing a clean, brand spanking new install on a machine that has no floppy drive. I have switched around the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot the CD ROM first, and that recognizes the disc ok. Windows formats the unpartitioned hard drive to NTFS. At first I got an error saying the NTFS.SYS file was corrupt, so I wiped everything out, and began again. This time I partitioned the hard drive first, and it seems to want to go futher, and I no longer get the NTFS.SYS error, but when it begins copying files, it hangs at about 18 percent when it starts copying 'driver.cab' and I get a Blue Screen saying PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

Who provides an excellent service for recovering 100K+ of files - NTFS; I clobbered a perfectly healthy drive by putting it in an enclosure that turned out to be a Maxstor Onetouch. 512GB partition is now 128GB. A local recovery service salvaged directories and 100K+ files, but most files contain binary 0's.

I was reallocating them earlier... and something went terribly terribly wrong. (gremlins I say) I try to log into my user account, but it says it does not have access to any of the files (like the desktop, c:/docs and settings/username/desktop)So is there a way to fix this, preferrably an app that will be able to rewrite the file permissions tables on a large scale?

Using:Win XP MCE SP2. I just set up an sftp server on one of my computers for remote backup purposes. I'm using openssh and cygwin to run the server so it can be secure and all that but I'm still a little paranoid about getting hacked etc. Since ssh uses windows users for login usernames and passwords I created a new user in the user group so it wouldn't have any administrative privileges. The way I understand is that if that user has some sort of ntfs file access restrictions then openssh will respect that and won't allow anyone logged on to the server with that user name to access any restricted files and folders. I want to restrict this user to have access to just ONE folder on the entire system. I don't want the user to be able to read or write or execute anything outside of its home folder. Since ssh respects ntfs restrictions i assumed that that would be the best way to do it. So if it is, what would be the easiest way to restrict access to everything but that one folder, and if that is not the best way then what is.
