I went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. I then typed format c: again as i thought the origional format didnt happen. I then get a message saying that this disk is not able to format. the bootdisk also doesnt seem to load correctly now either.
I was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
if someone could tell me how to format windows xp home edition from the bios and not using the xp disk. I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
i just installed windows xp pro i had layin around just for the hell of it, and it turns out that it had SP0. my internet connection is extremely slow at the moment so it would be painful to download service pack 2. i have a winxp home cd that has SP2 included on that. is there anyway i can install it off that, with out formatting and using XP home?
I have been trying to format my hard drives. I tried using Device Manager, it let me format my E drive, but not the C drive, and then I tried by booting with the XP CD. Somehow I managed to install Windows on my E drive, and my C drive is still as it was. I have been following the instructions on how to format and install to the letter, but it's not happening for me. All of the screens match what the instructions say, but the result is nothing.I have searched this forum for HD/XP advice, and have done as suggested, no luck. How do I format my C drive, and start again?
I want to format my hard drive on my dell laptop. when inserting the restore disk I get this message "Windows xp software on your computer is newer than the one on this Disk. Cannot format disk"
I'm trying to boot to my trusty 98 bootup disk and it says it can't read the c:....my only guess is that it's an ntfs partition.how can I format this thing?
Yeah I have reformatted my hard drives a few times over the years so I am no stranger to it however I am just curious about something. When I go to reformat with my DELL Windows XP Home Edition CD I will then revert back to SP1. I have SP3 installed onto my computer right now. I also have a SP2 CD I got from Microsoft about 3 years ago or so. Should I first install the SP2 cd or is there no need to do that seeing SP3 should have all of SP2 updates in it?
I have formated my drive and have an oem addition of xp home. After formating my drive, i started to list all the files and before installing i took out my disk and cleaned it. But in the process smashed it accidentally. I NEED XP FOR IPOD,OFFICE AND SCHOOL WORK. I have my xp codes on my computer still but need the disk.
My son couldn't find the original XP cd that came with his Systemax, so we bought a new XP Pro OS and installed it. While I was working on the connectivity issue, we found the original XP cd. Since I had not activated the XP Pro, I'd like to switch to the original XP and save the new one for a future laptop.
But, when I went to install the original, I didn't seem to have much of a choice because it was about to install the original on the same partition as the XP Pro . . . so I quit, and tried to format the HDD again, but since I was using the Command Prompt, MS said that the disk was already in use so that I couldn't format it.
I am trying to format my computer. I have the cd and cd key to do it but for some reason my dvd drive dos'nt want to read any disk. So I can't format it. I think that I have a virus that is doing this to my dvd drive. So can I format a different way besides the disk.
Trying to install XP Pro and I need to fdisk. Should I use a Win98 or 98se boot disk does it matter? I know I can use the CD to do it all but lets say I wasn't and wanted to clean up the hard disk from a fresh perspective would it matter which version of boot disk I used?
I tried reformatting my pc for several times now but I can't reformat it.It just goes up to the stage where I have to pick the drive to format but there are no drives to choose from. The drives doesn't show and I can't pick the C drive to format or see any other drive.I don't have anything listed. My box just says Unknown Disk (There is no disk in this drive.) It just stops there and I can't proceed.

I decided to do a complete format with my windows disk, and so I booted from it and I have come upon the selection screen which asks which partition it wants to install under. There was an E: partition, which I removed.
How do you format a new, fresh, hard drive to NTFS? Without using an XP system or installation disk? I know for old stuff you can use fdisk and format in DOS.
I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (all data are taken from Magical Jelly Bean) which is Installed from 'OEM' media in a PC Info QuestXPAND. I have the Info Quest recovery CD-ROM for windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I want to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. The problem is that I scratched the sticker which brought the product key on in a crisis of complete stupidity. I do not have a product key. If I format the disk will the recovery-cd-rom ask for a product key; If so, can I give the OEM product key that is given by Magical Jelly Bean and I'm guessing is different from the key that was on the sticker?
Laptop has become heavily virus infected and needs to be formatted. I do not have original operating system disk. It is out of warranty also. It does not boot up always. How can I format it in order to reinstall windows xp.
I want to remove windows xp home off my laptop, I had to install a new hard drive and when I installed windows xp I found out I didn't have the drivers disk so nothing works. I went to Dell site to get drivers and there are hundreds of them, the ones I did download wont work. So I want to reformat my harddrive and go back to ME. but I can't. What can I use to FORMAT this hard drive?

I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?
Anyway i can download the CD? I m using Xps Gen 5 I got the cd of windows xp, but i get an error trying to format with it... I dont know if its my PC or the CD
my pc died and was fixed by a friend, there are two partitions on the hard drive, what were the C & D drives, the C drive is 29.9gig and has remained unaffected. however, what was the D partition (which is now the H) is in RAW format and windows will not let me format it. i'm not worried about losing anything that may still be on it, but it's 427gig and me little C drive's getting full up fast
Future Shop seems to have decided last time when i brought my computer in that they would keep my XP CD for themselves, and now its been too long to go back and get it.I want to format my computer using the F11 key, i've heard that this is possible.
My pc is running a bit slow lately, got lots of stuff, too much on it.So I'd like to restore my pc back to factory settings. I have around 110 gig of stuff and I don't want to lose it. So I bought a firewire drive to back it all up on. My plan is, transfer all my data to the external hd. Then formatting my hd completley and rebooting as new, then transferring my needed data abck on to my pc.
I've never formatted before so not to sure how. My main worry is the pc not restarting. I have a start up cd that came with my pc but i have no windows xp cd it came pre installed.
Well, as the title suggests, i'm the latest in what is seemingly a long line of people having trouble attempting to perform the same task - reformatting a laptop running on Windows XP to run on a fresh, clean, smooth, lovely version of XP SP2.
I have read through every single topic with reference to what I am trying to do, and am still COMPLETELY lost. I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, my friend can think of, everything that has been suggested on various websites to no avail. I must just be doing things wrong.
