I want to format my hard drive on my dell laptop. when inserting the restore disk I get this message "Windows xp software on your computer is newer than the one on this Disk. Cannot format disk"
View 8 RepliesI've tried it in safe mode too, and I get the same message for defragmenter "disk defragmenter could not start", for scan disk "..could not complete scan ", and system restore just does not respond when I select the restore point, I can only close it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently had to move up to WinXP Home on a Compaq Presario after saying goodbye to my trusty Packard Bell running Win95a.My WinXP Home came preinstalled on the computer and I had no WinXP Home CD Disk as a backup. I contacted Compaq and they immediately sent me a set of Backup Disks in case the 'System Restore' on the computer wasn't available for one reason or the other.I have yet to put them into the computer to see what they consist of. I am not experiencing any problems and I don't want to create any by doing something I am not sure of.I am just curious is this set of disks is what I would use if I had to reinstall WinXP Home?
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy son couldn't find the original XP cd that came with his Systemax, so we bought a new XP Pro OS and installed it. While I was working on the connectivity issue, we found the original XP cd. Since I had not activated the XP Pro, I'd like to switch to the original XP and save the new one for a future laptop.
But, when I went to install the original, I didn't seem to have much of a choice because it was about to install the original on the same partition as the XP Pro . . . so I quit, and tried to format the HDD again, but since I was using the Command Prompt, MS said that the disk was already in use so that I couldn't format it.
I am trying to format my computer. I have the cd and cd key to do it but for some reason my dvd drive dos'nt want to read any disk. So I can't format it. I think that I have a virus that is doing this to my dvd drive. So can I format a different way besides the disk.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. I then typed format c: again as i thought the origional format didnt happen. I then get a message saying that this disk is not able to format. the bootdisk also doesnt seem to load correctly now either.

The drives doesn't show and I can't pick the C drive to format or see any other drive.I don't have anything listed. My box just says Unknown Disk (There is no disk in this drive.) It just stops there and I can't proceed.

How do you format a new, fresh, hard drive to NTFS? Without using an XP system or installation disk? I know for old stuff you can use fdisk and format in DOS.

I have the Info Quest recovery CD-ROM for windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I want to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. The problem is that I scratched the sticker which brought the product key on in a crisis of complete stupidity. I do not have a product key. If I format the disk will the recovery-cd-rom ask for a product key; If so, can I give the OEM product key that is given by Magical Jelly Bean and I'm guessing is different from the key that was on the sticker?

The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything. I have tried another version of windows xp pro. Same thing.I want to reformat, i need to reformat. This dialer is costing me money.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
I plan on restoring my HP a330n. The last time I restored I had driver problems with my sound card, and LAN. Is their anyway I can save the driver to disk and apply when restore is complete? Also I DO NOT have my original restore disk, but I have the option to just use the in-system restore option, or create disk. Should I create or does it not matter? Also how can I restore the system completely, the last time i did "Complete Restore" there were still unwanted files in the PC.

Is it safe to restore an OS disk image without removing the partitions i.e. restoring an XP disk image back to its original partition whilst keeping the Vista partition intact. I'm trying to find a safe/efficient way of backing up my OS's by saving disk images to an external hard drive, so if something goes wrong, ie doesn't boot, I can restore an image via the other OS.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI opened Disk Cleanup and chose More Options. I clicked on Windows Components and decided that everything on the list was just fine. I clicked Next and I guess I should have clicked Cancel. The box said it was deleting files, etc and I wondered why, when I hadn't checked anything and all the boxes were unchecked. Anyway, I then went to System Restore and created a restore point so I could do the cleaning up of my System Restore. I am so mad at myself because I know I should've created a system restore point prior to doing any of the Disk cleanup!!! When I had finished cleaning up with Disk Cleanup, I tried to copy some info from a newsletter, only to find out that my WordPad program was not available!!!! Where could I have lost this program, in Disk Cleanup???? I need help to find out how to get my Wordpad program back, since I can't use system restore.

When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

Start button - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup - More Options. You will have the option to delete all but the most recent restore points. I had over 2 gigabytes of restore points.To permanently reduce the space System Restore takes up, right click 'My Computer' - properties and on the System Restore tab adjust the settings.
