View 5 Replies View RelatedAlthough I am not a computer wiz, I did manage to format the harddrive on my old computer by writing format C:, after restarting in MS-DOS while running Windows 98.
With Windows XP I don't find that option. I can get to the Command prompt C:, but it won't let me format the harddrive.Any assistance with this would be much appreciated, I am trying to re-format and re-partition.
I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just gotten a second hand computer that has had it's hard drive cleaned out. Trying to load the OS, I first loaded win98se, and then XP.What I did not know was that 98SE loaded in a 2gb partition, without me partitioning the drive. Then loaded XP into the main partition. Now, there are various faults.I have tried to run fdisk, both in drive c: (the partition with 98x) and drive e: (the partition with XP)Neither will allow me to run fdisk to clear the hard drive and start again. I have tried all possible commands as per my old MS-DOS book. It states it cannot find fdisk either in command prompt or run.

View 8 Replies View Relatedwhen running chkdsk /f at command prompt in windows, i get the message about drive being in use, would you like to run chkdsk after next restart. I choose yes and restart the computer. But, after chkdsk runs, I dont have time to read the results as it quickly continues to load the OS when it is finished. Chkdsk (without /f) in cmd in windows tells me there is a problem with my file system although I do not have any bad sectors. I have run chkdsk /f (after restart) twice and it still has not fixed whatever the error is.

While I was working on the connectivity issue, we found the original XP cd. Since I had not activated the XP Pro, I'd like to switch to the original XP and save the new one for a future laptop.
But, when I went to install the original, I didn't seem to have much of a choice because it was about to install the original on the same partition as the XP Pro . . . so I quit, and tried to format the HDD again, but since I was using the Command Prompt, MS said that the disk was already in use so that I couldn't format it.
