I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (all data are taken from Magical Jelly Bean) which is Installed from 'OEM' media in a PC Info QuestXPAND. I have the Info Quest recovery CD-ROM for windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I want to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. The problem is that I scratched the sticker which brought the product key on in a crisis of complete stupidity. I do not have a product key. If I format the disk will the recovery-cd-rom ask for a product key; If so, can I give the OEM product key that is given by Magical Jelly Bean and I'm guessing is different from the key that was on the sticker?
I am attempting to format my hard drive by booting up using a windows xp disc, and entering the recovery console. After the drivers and such have loaded up and I enter the recovery console, I type format c:, it asks me for confirmation and I type yes. When I press enter, the screen looks as though it is loading for a second but then just returns to the recovery console without having done anything. I try typing the command in again and again nothing happens. When I reboot the computer, my hard drive has not been formatted. How can I get the recovery console to actually format my hard drive?
I am trying to format the computer, booting with xp disc and running recovery console, followed by typing map, then format C:it shows it formating, up to 100% then I type exit, as the computer boots up after that it just goes to the normal log in screen like nothing ever happened. After that I tried to install XP by deleting previous OS installation, it installed, but previous folders & files are still there and things are all messed up.Is there software that I dont need to pay for that will completely and totally wipe out everything on her HD? is there another method that will work?
If I lost the disk that came with my PC, can I use any XP home disk and the product key on the side of the PC to reinstall? With out getting in any trouble?
I have been told that instead of having to buy another retail version of an operating system as long as I have the install disk all I have to do is get a product key through Microsoft for like 50 bucks. How Do I go at doing this I am looking at getting a product key for Windows Xp Pro 32bit.
I want to format my hard drive on my dell laptop. when inserting the restore disk I get this message "Windows xp software on your computer is newer than the one on this Disk. Cannot format disk"
My son couldn't find the original XP cd that came with his Systemax, so we bought a new XP Pro OS and installed it. While I was working on the connectivity issue, we found the original XP cd. Since I had not activated the XP Pro, I'd like to switch to the original XP and save the new one for a future laptop.
But, when I went to install the original, I didn't seem to have much of a choice because it was about to install the original on the same partition as the XP Pro . . . so I quit, and tried to format the HDD again, but since I was using the Command Prompt, MS said that the disk was already in use so that I couldn't format it.
I am trying to format my computer. I have the cd and cd key to do it but for some reason my dvd drive dos'nt want to read any disk. So I can't format it. I think that I have a virus that is doing this to my dvd drive. So can I format a different way besides the disk.
Today I went and bought a new hard to install xp clean but only to find out Microsoft wouldn't accept my product keys which for some reason they have blocked . I never thought a retail version could be block . I call Microsoft to find out why my keys are being blocked . I was told that I was trying to activated it to many times in one day , or something like that , which really wasn't the case . I really never got a straight answer as to why . So now my retail version is no good to use .
I went to format my pc, using the recovery bootdisk i have.Im on XP.I put the disk in and typed in dos, format c:. everything seemed to be goin a ok and then it asked for teh volume label, i pressed enter then rebooted my pc with the disk in again. Trying to install XP Pro and I need to fdisk. Should I use a Win98 or 98se boot disk does it matter? I know I can use the CD to do it all but lets say I wasn't and wanted to clean up the hard disk from a fresh perspective would it matter which version of boot disk I used?
I tried reformatting my pc for several times now but I can't reformat it.It just goes up to the stage where I have to pick the drive to format but there are no drives to choose from. The drives doesn't show and I can't pick the C drive to format or see any other drive.I don't have anything listed. My box just says Unknown Disk (There is no disk in this drive.) It just stops there and I can't proceed.

I decided to do a complete format with my windows disk, and so I booted from it and I have come upon the selection screen which asks which partition it wants to install under. There was an E: partition, which I removed.
How do you format a new, fresh, hard drive to NTFS? Without using an XP system or installation disk? I know for old stuff you can use fdisk and format in DOS.
Laptop has become heavily virus infected and needs to be formatted. I do not have original operating system disk. It is out of warranty also. It does not boot up always. How can I format it in order to reinstall windows xp.
I want to remove windows xp home off my laptop, I had to install a new hard drive and when I installed windows xp I found out I didn't have the drivers disk so nothing works. I went to Dell site to get drivers and there are hundreds of them, the ones I did download wont work. So I want to reformat my harddrive and go back to ME. but I can't. What can I use to FORMAT this hard drive?
Okay, i have posted thios at heaps of forums and they wont give me any useful info. So now its your turn :P I have windows xp cd. But it will not boot up. The bios is correct, and the cd is in there etc. It says press any key to boot, and i do.It detects some stuff then restarts and loads into my desktop Doesnt do anything. I have tried another version of windows xp pro. Same thing.I want to reformat, i need to reformat. This dialer is costing me money.
I was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
My son moved out of town and now wants his copy of Windows XP Pro that he left behind. I have two copies that are idententical except for the product keys. Is there somewhere in Windows that would tell me which copy to send and which to keep? will he be able to reuse this disk to put on a new HD in a new computer? Can he put his old HD in a new computer?
I want to reformat my hard drive but my computer of 2 years only came with a recovery disc. Do I have to purchase winxp to install the os? i need to purchase recovery disc where n how i proceed?
All you need is a laptop or a pc with hal.dll error and another laptop or cpu running any other os....ok here we go all you need is a usb or flash drive 256 mb and sometimes mabee smaller.. now download slax 6.1.1 ( small stripped down version of linux capable of booting fully from usb) just extract it to the usb drive and run the bootinst file ( if using vista u need to go to cmd first then type the usb drive (ex.. d: ) then enter then type boot cd enter then bootinst.bat .....once the file opens continue with instructions and your almost there... Now put the usb into the pc or laptop with hal.dll error ..... when boot menu is up type watever it says (like hit the f key for boot order or boot menue or something) when u hit the f key then change boot order to usb hard drive to the 1 slot and save and exit....now onlmost there just start the computer and let slax boot this will take a few minutes and if the letters on the screene stop just wait it out for a couple of minutes.

Purchased a Presario SR1220nx two months ago. It came with a 'System Recovery Disk".(SRD) Is this all I would need incase of a complete software problem to get back in operation again or should I be copying some additional OS files to a CD ? What are the disadvantages of the SRD and the advantages of having the WinXP software ? Seems to me that the SRD is all that I need in case of a failure?
I've just bought a used laptop running XP Home. It comes with a system recovery disk. Can I use that to do a clean install of the OS so as to remove every trace of the previous owner whose name keeps popping up in folders that can't be deleted or re-named.
My old laptop died and I now have a brand new, factory sealed Toshiba Satellite Pro, model L300. It came with trial versions of MS Office. I don't want to use the trial version since I have a perfectly good version that I porchased a few years ago. (It's the Teacher and student Edition 2003.) At first I tried installing the 2003 version that I own. It seems to go through the install procedure to the end, but when I try to open OUTLOOK, I get an error that states the MAPI32.DLL" is corrupt.
I spoke with Toshiba but they were not a great help. The told me to go the ADD?Remove and remove the MSOFFICE trial version, which I did. I also removed the 2003 Version so that I could "start from scratch", so to speak, trying to keep things "graceful". The same error occurs after installing the 2003 software, and oddly, some of the 2007 software still seems to be there!. Probably residing in the registry somewhere.
I have a compq computer(SR2034NX) that has crashed. I tried the recovery disks that I had made. But they do not work. When I turn on the computer it goes directly to the recovery page, ask for the disk and says it the wrong one, I know that is it correct, Is their any way I can download the recovery disk again put it on to a zip drive then transfer it to my computer, or can I connect the 2 computers together and transfer it that way, ro can I pick up a disk locally
