I've torn the house apart looking for it. I found all the other stuff that came with my laptop, but not that. Will the recovery disk do the same thing? If not, is it possible to use an XP installer cd from another computer?

View 4 Replies View Relatedlaptop is about to get a bit of an overhaul. Extra RAM should be here tomorrow then I'm gonna wipe it and reinstall XP. It's an Equium A60 as far as I can work out (similar/same as a Satellite A60?) running XP home. She can't find the recovery disk (if it even has one?) and I only have XP Pro, Can I use my XP pro the same way as I would on a normal desktop? Stick the CD in and boot from it to install a fresh OS? Is there anything I need to look out for on a laptop?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer has just crashed, and i just found out that i have lost the Toshiba Recovery CD. Apparently, according to my dad's computer friend, there are 'some sites' that provide downloads of a "boot file" that is able to recover the Windows Operating system. i honestly think that is just bogus

I'd like to install the OS from a Microsoft Windows XP CD but wondered if the Microsoft disk would even install onto the Toshiba and if so, would the laptop function properly? Thanks.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOne of our computers (kids have at school) might need a reformat & XP Home reinstall. I'm wondering about the Product Key - we never had it. It is a Dell. XP Home was already installed. We have Reinstall discs. I am reading about reinstalling XP and it says to Have Your Product Key handy! I'm finding the Product Key can be ONLY be found "on the orange sticker on the back of the envelope holding the original disc." We never had original discs since XP was installed, so we don't have that enevelope or Product Key sticker - nothing. Those orange stickers seem to be the only way to find the 25-digit Product Key for XP. We have the reinstall discs and 20-digit Product Registration numbers (shown on the Registered to box on the system info box).If it turns out the computer will need to be reformatted and XP reinstalled, will the Reinstall disc know that XP was pre-installed by Dell and we didn't install it? How will it work? What information will I have to supply? (I've looked at the Dell site but feel uneasy.)

I have the Info Quest recovery CD-ROM for windows XP Home Edition SP2 and I want to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. The problem is that I scratched the sticker which brought the product key on in a crisis of complete stupidity. I do not have a product key. If I format the disk will the recovery-cd-rom ask for a product key; If so, can I give the OEM product key that is given by Magical Jelly Bean and I'm guessing is different from the key that was on the sticker?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to reinstall XP with the recovery discs I made the first week after my puchase and that was 3 years ago. I am pretty clear about the procedure and I have already made a backup of my documents, pictures and music on a USB external harddrive. My question is what other info is required and will I need to do a product activation process ? I am also installing Service pack 2 for the first time because mirosoft will not support SP1 users after October 10, 2006. The last question is I have 3 pop-email accounts, yahoo, hotmail, gmail and will all the mail be destroyed or will it still be on the server after the re-install ?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI contracted a Trojan Virus on my laptop. A friend removed my hard drive, connected it to his PC and says he's now deleted the Virus but that it's screwed with my registry. My Disk Drive doesn't work, neither do my USB ports or speakers. My friend says I need to reinstall windows but I'm worried about losing my files. I've got most backed up but about 3 months worth that aren't and I can't afford to lose them. I read the reinstall thread and it said my files would be fine, which is great, but I don't have an XP CD - only a Toshiba 'Recovery' CD that came with my laptop and cheerfully proclaims that it will delete all my files.

Unlike most Dell PCs of today, she does not have an Operating System CD that can be used to reinstall Windows. I was wondering if any Gateway owners for PCs purchased around 2003 know if Gateway actually sent recovery CD's out with their PCs or not. If not, is there a recovery partition on the Hard Drive? If not, are there steps that can be taken to obtain a recovery CD from Gateway?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba that runs on Windows XP, which I think is about a year-and-a-half old. About a month ago, I suddenly lost the sound. At first it just become really hard to hear, then barely audible, and now there is absolutely no sound.I hooked up some external speakers (which used to work in this computer), and I can't get any sound from them either. Given that, I figure the cause is not the internal speaker hardware.I've looked at all the sound settings I can find and none are muted and are all set at high levels. Not only can I not hear sound on websites and such, but also the sound effects for the computer (such as the chime I used to hear when an e-mail arrived).
