My niece has a Toshiba Satellite laptop on which the harddrive died. My aunt ordered a new drive from newegg a couple of days ago. My question is this, will her Toshiba Recovery CD's work on the new hard drive or will she need an actual reinstallation CD for XP home? Thank you for any help in this matter.
View 7 RepliesMy hard drive crashed beyond salvage. I bought a new hard drive, installed it and used my recovery disks to get the basics back. It is a Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-Gr390, to be specific). It has Windows XP, pre SP1/SP2. When I installed it, I went through the formatting process and formatted it for the first time, being that it's a new HD. Everything worked as expected, but I have yet to update anything because I can not successfully connect to the Internet.
All efforts to create a connection were unsuccessful.Next to my laptop is a slow Dell desktop, runnung a fully updated XP operating system. Using the same cable modem, connection to the Internet was fine with the desktop for both wired and wireless, but not the newly formatted laptop. My ethernet jack and wireless card on the laptop are working (according to the device manager).
I need to reinstall Windows XP, but I don't have the disk. I can't even remember if I got one. I have the Toshiba recovery disk. Do Toshiba include the normal Windows cd? I've torn the house apart looking for it. I found all the other stuff that came with my laptop, but not that.Will the recovery disk do the same thing? If not, is it possible to use an XP installer cd from another computer?

The problem is, He nor I, never recieved a RECOVERY DVD when he originaly got this laptop last september. It's an Equium A60 as far as I can work out (similar/same as a Satellite A60?) running XP home. She can't find the recovery disk (if it even has one?) and I only have XP Pro, Can I use my XP pro the same way as I would on a normal desktop? Stick the CD in and boot from it to install a fresh OS? Is there anything I need to look out for on a laptop?

The drive spins up and the light comes on to indicate it is running but nothing is shown in device manager or My computer. I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 with Vista home on it and it works OK, but I bought a larger HDD and I thought that I would put Windows XP PRO on it, I went from a Hitachi 160GB 2.5" SATA drive to a 250GB drive, same Manufacturer, the only difference in the drives is the original was a SATA 1.50 and the new drive is a 3.0, BIOS see's the drive and the XP disk does al the usual stuff, then it asks if you want to Install windows on it, so I click OK and then it says the windows cannot detect any HDD and aborts the installation, I know that the 2 SATA's are compatible and the only draw back is that the 3.0 may operate in the 1.5 mode in the worse case scenario, but windows doesn't see the drive at all.

But When I go to use it now it just ignores my pressing. Im kinda getting pissed since no recovery CDs. It is Windows XP Home Edition says on sticker. Is it possible to boot the D: drive (The recovery partition) with command prompt. Or am I screwed since it just ignores me pressing f10.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager - after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later - my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing - actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off - when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either

Before the bug I had Windows Installer Clean Up utility on my computer that I used, like when Adobe Reader screwed up and I couldn't download it again because of remnants of Adobe still on the computer that I couldn't get rid of. Now I have that problem with Java. After the recovery Java wouldn't work. So I deleted it in the Add/Delete. But there are remnants that won't delete. Now I can't find the Installer Cleanup utility. My computer will shut down.I originally thought that it might have been an overheating issue, but i ran Sandra and all temps came up under 40 cel. I can not seem to keep my computer booted long enough to fix anything. It will stay booted as long as it is on the choice option of the Windows XP cd to install, repair or exit.

1. I have a HP- Pavilion Windows XP mediacenter edition.
2. My recovery mode does not work and my computer never came with a recovery disc of any sort (grrrr stupid idea to put the recovery on the computer IMO)
3. I have little money to spend as of right now. Buying a new computer not an option and buying a new windows operating system is MAYBE a option but one ide like to avoid.
4. Im more curious as to how i should tackle this. Ive read up on a few sites found a site that gives a bootable disc containing the NTLDR file ( I dont know a whole lot about this stuff)
This is all just very aggrivating for me. My computer works and runs better than most new computers despite bieng 4 years old. This is the first issue ive had with it in awhile other than my recovery not working due to a error about a hive file not working ( i figured ide make a seperate thread if i choose to worry about this issue but if some one finds this to be a important detail please do tell me) Also ive looked into purchasing the spotmau disc for it 'adervtises' it is able to fix this problem. How reliable they are i am not sure of how ever.
My WD passport drive just stop working with 400GB data in it. But the inbuilt virtual CD drive is still working. and for the Storage drive, its showing capacity of zero bytes.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a HP Pavilion laptop which is about a month or so old. The D drive is labeled as the HP Recovery drive and it is roughly 12 gb. It is formatted in FAT32. I just analyzed it with the disk defrag and it was almost 100% red. The report says the total fragmentation is 47% and the file fragmentation is 97%. Should I defragment this or is it supposed to be this way? And if it's not supposed to be this way does anyone know how or why this happened?

Instead of burning as disc images, I just copied and pasted these 4 CDs to my USB HDD as 4 folders called "RecoveryCD 1", "RecoveryCD 2", "RecoveryCD 3" and "RecoveryCD 4". Now my laptop got problem and I lost my 4 recovery CDs. All I have now is 4 recovery folders in my USB HDD. I burned another 4 CDs as data disc from my USB HDD, but it didn't work out (it didn't boot because they are just data discs). I again burned my first recovery CD as a bootable CD, and it booted but didn't automatically install XP, drivers and other softwares. It just appeared some sentences on a black screen and cursor is waiting for me to type after the text, "A:>".
