Reinstall On An Old Gateway 300s - Use OS CD's - Recovery Part

Nov 26, 2008

A client of mine has a Gateway 300s PC. She has two CD's that came with the computer that sound somewhat relavent: A drivers CD and an Applications CD. Unlike most Dell PCs of today, she does not have an Operating System CD that can be used to reinstall Windows. I was wondering if any Gateway owners for PCs purchased around 2003 know if Gateway actually sent recovery CD's out with their PCs or not. If not, is there a recovery partition on the Hard Drive? If not, are there steps that can be taken to obtain a recovery CD from Gateway?

System Recovery For Gateway Laptop - Disc Is Corrupted

Oct 15, 2007

I tried to install the Recovery System, from the original disc, onto a 2-year-old Gateway laptop, but appartently the TrayApp file (whatever that is) on the disc is corrupted. I can't get a new disc because Gateway no longer carries them. What else can I use? Can I buy a Windows XP (the original OS) update and install that? Can I use the recovery disc from another brand of computer, like Dell?

Tablet Part Not Working, Recovery DVD Not Working

Aug 8, 2008

I have a Gateway CX2618, w/ windows XP tablet edition 2005 version 2002, sp2. And wanted to wipe it clean and reinstall just the things I use. Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.

Reinstall Using Recovery Discs

Sep 19, 2006

I want to reinstall XP with the recovery discs I made the first week after my puchase and that was 3 years ago. I am pretty clear about the procedure and I have already made a backup of my documents, pictures and music on a USB external harddrive. My question is what other info is required and will I need to do a product activation process ? I am also installing Service pack 2 for the first time because mirosoft will not support SP1 users after October 10, 2006. The last question is I have 3 pop-email accounts, yahoo, hotmail, gmail and will all the mail be destroyed or will it still be on the server after the re-install ?

Reinstall But Only Have Recovery Cd - Contracted A Trojan Virus

Sep 21, 2008

I contracted a Trojan Virus on my laptop. A friend removed my hard drive, connected it to his PC and says he's now deleted the Virus but that it's screwed with my registry. My Disk Drive doesn't work, neither do my USB ports or speakers. My friend says I need to reinstall windows but I'm worried about losing my files. I've got most backed up but about 3 months worth that aren't and I can't afford to lose them. I read the reinstall thread and it said my files would be fine, which is great, but I don't have an XP CD - only a Toshiba 'Recovery' CD that came with my laptop and cheerfully proclaims that it will delete all my files.

I have Windows XP and I use AOL. For the past few days, every time I sign onto the internet, blocks keep appearing on the bottom bar, next to my start button that have a round ball on the left side and then it says Aurora, part of the ABI network. I have no idea what this is or how to get rid of it. When I right click and get the drop down box, my options are: move, size, or close group. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

Gateway And Looks Like It Has Hardly Been Used

Aug 21, 2005

It worked but he didn't have any of the disks that came with it. It is a Gateway and looks like it has hardly been used. When we turned it on it tried to boot at Windows XP Professional setup and asks for the CD that XP Pro comes on. Which of course we don't have. On closer inspection we realized that the computer originally had Windows ME installed on it and someone must have started to install XP Pro on it and either got an error or they stopped before setup could finish. Needless to say I can't get what little I know to work to fix it. I can't get a prompt and it won't even boot in safe mode. I have Windows Xp Home Edition on the computer that I am currently using and hoped that maybe the missing files may have been something they had in common. They start out with I386, like I386OEMBIOS.CAT.

Gateway VGA Monitor

Dec 2, 2004

I have a Gateway computer that’s about 4 years old running Windows 98. It includes a Gateway VGA monitor (model EV700). I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows using their resource CD’s. Everything is fine now except the monitor will only display the lowest resolution settings. I have tried to change the resolution through the display icon in control panel, but it will not allow me to increase the resolution. I have even gone to the Gateway web site and download the latest driver for this monitor, but still have the same results.

As a result, the monitor will no longer display graphics of any kind while on the internet or while working with photo imaging software.

Unmountable Volume - Can't Launch Recovery Console Through Recovery Disc?

Sep 5, 2008

Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?
