I tried to install the Recovery System, from the original disc, onto a 2-year-old Gateway laptop, but appartently the TrayApp file (whatever that is) on the disc is corrupted. I can't get a new disc because Gateway no longer carries them. What else can I use? Can I buy a Windows XP (the original OS) update and install that? Can I use the recovery disc from another brand of computer, like Dell?

I got blue screen of death on my laptop and it keeps on restarting before the window can actually boot up. It show's this message and reboots every single time when starting up Windows XP. I tried recovering the windows from the Recovery CD but it goes to the Gateway Symbol n freezes there and I have to restart the system every single time and try to boot from the recovery CD. it goes searching for recovery date on the hard drive and if not found any it will boot the recovery cd. but it goes to this scan and just freezes there with running the recovery data from the cd.

My boss has two laptops both toshiba his older one a satellite 1110 his daughter had being using and was full of junk he asked me to run the restore disk ive used the wrong disc I now have the corredt discs to hand including the windows xp start up. I also dowloaded a 6 disc floppy boot up for xp but cant get the laptop to boot into anything . Everything works fine except when I boot up and following the Sony logo and Intel logo the following message appears "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

My packard bell notebook model (easynote) E-3242 running windows XP. After installing SP2, XP wont load, even in safe mode. I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. I do NOT have any XP disc available.How can I begin a re-install or similiar from the Hardisk with no Discs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?

Unlike most Dell PCs of today, she does not have an Operating System CD that can be used to reinstall Windows. I was wondering if any Gateway owners for PCs purchased around 2003 know if Gateway actually sent recovery CD's out with their PCs or not. If not, is there a recovery partition on the Hard Drive? If not, are there steps that can be taken to obtain a recovery CD from Gateway?

I looked at it, and it has booted every time but once (30 different boots). The one time it didn't the BIOS did not recognize the hard drive as being present. Its a tough problem because its very hard to duplicate the error.

I have partition magic, can i reduce that partition to like 3gb so i have extra space? and.I also got a restore CD... what the? I am not sure why I need a partition in my HDD and a restore CD. I reinstalled original 512mb, normal operation. Removed 512 & installed 1ea. 1 Gig module, normal operation. Then added the added the 512 module, normal operation. BIOS confirms 1 and a half Gig's RAM. Why won't the 2 Gig's work?

Sometimes it will go to the Windows screen that has the bar at the bottom like it is loading and then it will just restart. But here lately it has been just going to the screen that asks if you want to start in safe mode and all the other choices. But it just locks up and won't go from there. Until I allowed Norton anti-virus to install new virus definitions and application s/w yesterday morning. That install requested a reboot. I continued what I was doing instead of rebooting right away. When I was done I clicked on OK and the machine shut down. View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a new 80 Gig HD for my laptop along with 2 of the adapters to connect the HDs to an EIDE cable in a desktop so I could Clone the Laptop HD to the new larger one. It goes through the motions and says completed successufully. But when I install the new HD in the laptop, I get an error "disk read error".Is it possible the new hard drive is bad even though the copy was done or am I doing something wrong? I have backed up my desktop HD many times using Ghost with no problems but this Laptop will not go.

When it starts up, it loads the initial Gateway bootscreen, and then goes to a black screen for approximately 5-10 minutes.
