Windows cannot load because the following file is missing or corrupt:

You may attempt to recover or repair this file using the original Windows CD

I changed (increaded) the Page File zise (Virtual Memory) on both drives and it corrupted the Registry. Now it does not even let me re-install winxp on that drive. Towards the end of the installation I get a message that it cannot copy certain files. The file names varies according to the SP version on the winxp pro cd.
Also, I lost the original OS disk from DELL.
I have a buddy that cannot start his computer because he has a corrupte system32 registry file. i have fixed this problem before on computers but i cant do this one. when i insert the xp cd and go to the recovery console i can not proceed with typing in the commands. usually when you go to the recovery console it asks for the administrator password, but when i do this to his computer it doesnt ask for it. it just goes to the c:> command line. then i try to type md tmp command and it says access denied..

In the device manager - it has a yellow exclamation mark on it. I tried updating the driver but the message was that the software was already the best match. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it says a file is missing or corrupt. I bought a new external CD ROM - but have the exact same problem with it. I went to Run and put in sfc /scannow and there were problems that maybe could be fixed - if only it could read the XP CD - then it could fix the CD ROM. But it can't read the CD because of the problem with the CD ROM. (a whole in my bucket story.) So - how can I fix the problem if it wants a CD to fix the problem but the CD ROM is not working to read the CD?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Microsoft XP Home. My machine did not ship with a XP Home setup CD so I cannot follow the windows prompt. I have heard about dell system restore CDs, however I'm not sure if one came with my machine, and if so where it is. If this is what I need can an ISO be downloaded anywhere online? I do know that there is some type of partition on my HD, however I'm not sure exactly what it consists of or how to find out.In case anyone asks, I cannot boot windows in safe mode. If possible I would like to try to repair this problem without a complete reformat and reinstall as my data is only partially backed up. Additionally I have considered the possibility that this issue is the result of a HD crash, however I am not sure how I would go about testing this. Lastly if a reformat and re-install is necessary is there anyway to backup "My Documents" without starting windows?

I decided to reformat the second partition, and for no particular reason decided to install Win 2000 there. Now on boot up I get the normal boot.ini menu but if I choose XP I get an error that says Win 2000 has a missing or corrupted file: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMd……..SYSTEMd not a misprint! I hit reset and choose Win2000 at the boot menu and Win 2000 comes up OK . I tried to repair 2000 and I re-installed it but still get the same error. I tried modifying the boot.ini file but it didn't.

The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

Since January my computer started getting error messages about corrupted files, corrupted registry, and drivers stopped working. I tried different things and ended up formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Things were fine for a while, but after a week I started getting messages about corrupt files again, having issues with drivers, and now Windows won't shut down properly. Also, the computer powers off of its own accord sometimes. I'm using Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I haven't made any hardware updates recently.
Some of the error messages I've been receiving are. For Bluesoleil (which I have uninstalled and reinstalled) it says that the file is corrupt and to try an anti-virus scan (I tried to copy the message, but the window went off on its own). AVG anti-virus keeps on saying there are no active components, or replacing all the commands with things beginning with @. The drivers for my Logitech Fusion webcam stopped working, but I've reinstalled them, and they work, for now. The Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer kept on corrupting. I've also had the message 'Windows - Registry Recovery One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy.
I keep getting these messages when I'm online telling me my registry is corrupted. These messages always try to direct me to some website (different every time) that will repair it. They start off saying "Message from SECURITY to ALERT".

Shows the windows XP pro login randomally; once logged in, background shows, explorer.exe doesn't run, and no windows hot keys respond. (every 1/8 boots)

Hello, folks. I'm having a little trouble removing some corrupted registry entries found with the Uniblue RegistryBoost scanner. It was able to remove the other 667 entries, no problem, but these 3 just don't want to go away:

I can't get a new disc because Gateway no longer carries them. What else can I use? Can I buy a Windows XP (the original OS) update and install that? System info: Win XP Pro. For security use KIS 09 and Webroot SpySweeper (henceforth, WSS). This is my desktop. Laptop the same except for Win XP home.
After I upgraded the WSS to their latest version (6.1.0.128) I had problems only on desktop and only with MSWord. After two days of working on desktop problem I discovered it was the WSS upgrade, as no problems if WSS shut down or removed via Windows add/remove.
I believe that the initial problem was caused by the computer being shut down when it was in the middle of an update.

I followed the Windows instructions "How to recover from a corrupted registry.."
Started the Recovery Console, created a tmp folder, backed up registry files to a new location, deleted exising registry files location, copy the registry files from the repair folder to System32config folder.

I found chkreg.exe on the MS site and was all set to try it when I realized ... my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. The only format it is available in (that I can find) at MS is floppy.

I ran chkdsk in recovery console and the computer is working, but I get the following messages on start up: SymSPort.exe had to stop, and notification.dll failed to load properly. I might have marked the partition active or not, I'm not sure. Older versions of the partition don't work. I think the boot.ini is ok. I checked it and can't find a problem. I copied HAL.DLL to all of my drives under windows/system/32 to see if booting was going to another drive and a different error message would appear. The first time it booted to the first choice in the boot screen and after that gives the same missing or corrupted HAL.DLL I've downloaded stuff from Microsoft but thought Symantec doesn't have good tech support any more; not like PowerQuest or whatever their name was.
