Aug 12, 2002Start button - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup - More Options. You will have the option to delete all but the most recent restore points. I had over 2 gigabytes of restore points.To permanently reduce the space System Restore takes up, right click 'My Computer' - properties and on the System Restore tab adjust the settings.

Oct 5, 2005Compaq Presario 5000. Hard Drive failed, replaced hard drive and now Win XP Quick Restore Cd's that came with this PC won't load on new Hard Drive. Instead, I just get a red screen with ERROR and says to contact Compaq for support. I'm assuming something is "missing" that allows the Quick Restore to be "ok" with loading. I've formatted the Hard Drive.

Mar 4, 2006i need to buy a compaq quickrestore cd. ive been looking online and they seem pretty hard to find. i found one website that might work but im not sure(restoredisks.com). also, i found somewhere that there was some type of settlement with compaq and that i might be able to get a quick restore cd for free through https://www.orderz.com/qrcons/page1.asp i have my serial number on the side of my computer so everything would be legit. if worst comes to worst i might just call up compaq tech support and try and buy one from them but im not sure how much that would cost.

May 1, 2007It says that TOTAL SIZE = 39 GB And Free Space = 5 GB Which means that the size of all files on C is 34 GB But when I select all files including Hidden files and Right Click> Properties, its size of all files is only 27 GB.I did clear recycle bin and disk defragmenter C, but still the same. So why is that?

Dec 23, 2004when a memory failure corrupted the OS. Compaq runs its setup from a special partition on the HD and Ive reloaded all of that from floppies. Setup says I have a 26.2GB HD but it is 60GB, otherwise all tests pass. In setup under storage the help file says I can select the boot sequence but I cant seem to find anyway to do this?? Id like to boot from the Win 2000 CD, I did make a boot floppy set from the 2000 CD but it dies on disk2 with a "isapnp.sys corrupt". Downloaded another makeboot.exe diskette set and get the same message. The original OS starts to load off the HD but stops with an error message and only allows a reboot. Can I move this HD to a slave on an XP system and load 2000 that way and then move back and configure the different hardware? Or just boot from the CD on my other PC and install

Jun 24, 2010I just did a restore on a compaq laptop that is about 5 years old. It was having problems connecting to internet so I started the restore a few years ago. When I started the restore it was just shutting off on me. I gave up and bought a new computer. Well just a few days ago a good friend of mine passed away, and his family wants pictures that I had on this computer. Went to start it up and see if it would turn on. Mar 14, 2010I decided to install an old hard drive from one of my computers that is no longer used into my aging desktop. I've always dual booted with Linux, and decided that with the extra space, I was going to put Linux into the "new" drive, and reinstall Windows on the old primary drive. Both are IDE, and the following problem occurs whether just the Windows drive is plugged in, or if both disk are hooked up: I have a Compaq SR1620NX. I've only added extra RAM, a TV Tuner, and the extra hard drive When I put in the Compaq restore CD's, you first boot from the CD's, in order to copy the files first (which are the first 50% of the install), then the computer reboots into XP, and continues the installation process (Mostly Drivers, Crapware, and the license key). I've done this process once or twice before, and it worked flawlessly, this time it keeps freezing.
Once the computer boots into XP, I'm prompted to insert the final recovery disk. A few files are copied over, and the computer reboots. Once the computer reboots, the same screen pops up, and continues the installation (as it's suppose to). After a minute or two after the reboot, the computer locks up completely. I've waited quite awhile, yet nothing happens. Although it's against what the screen says, I hold the power button in, and let the computer reboot. Again, the installation screen pops up, but nothing happens

Her original 20GB harddrive won't boot up in the new system....it gets to where the XP colored window flashes, goes to a blue screen of death screen, but that blinks out so quickly that I can't read it or pause it, and the computer reboots itself. Oct 24, 2003Recently took some hits on my Compaq Presario 7478 system. Got two or three nasties via the 'Net. After McAfee's virus scan and removal, began experiencing weird happenings, such as system closing down and restarting. Then just not starting. Tried a few remedies [probably inadvisedly], and finally the system seemed to hang on my restore at the same place repeatedly.Ultimately the system could no longer establish my OS. Restore failed.
Bottom line: Could not invoke computer restore. Could do nothing with this computer.Q... Being compaq is the BIOS set to a certain condition that would prevent my reformatting the hard drive and restablishing an OS? Is this an option I can override? If I were to piggy-back the existing hard drive onto an operating hard-drive and reformat would that solve this problem and permit me to then create or repair the hard drive subsequently to get my compaq back?
Compaq Restore Cd's Work Mother Board Changing It's Self
May 2, 2006I have a compaq computer and have a problem with the restore cd from compaq. I needed to reformat the hard drive because of some crup files. When I put the restore cd in the computer is says the cd's are not for this compaq. I taked to compaq and gave them all the information they ask for and was told that I had the correct cd and it must be a bad cd set. They had me order a new set of cd's from there online store which I did with the part number they gave me after I double checked the number to see if they were correct and I got them in yesterday and still had the same problem. I talked to hp again last night and was told that the mother board most likely needed to be tatoo to match the cd's. I was told to take it to one of there repair stores to have this done. Never heard of a mother board changing it's self.

Compaq Presario Sr1930nx Recovery Disk?
Jul 7, 2010I have a Compaq Presario SR1930NX, it previously belonged to my brother and when I recieved it it was a virus addled mess. Luckily, or so I thought, it had a recovery partition. The problem was I did not know how to use it.

Armed with this knowledge I went back to my computer and started it up. I tried both F10 and F11, I can't remember which but one did nothing and the other sent me to the standard BIOS menu that I could reach by hitting Esc. Is there some kind of BIOS update I need to run to fix this? Or am I just hosed and have to shell out money to try and get a recovery disc?
Loosing 1GB Of Free Space After Each System Restore?
Aug 21, 2005my problem is, after each restore was completed, i lost 1GB of free space on my C drive. by the 5th restore, i was up to losing 2GB of free space on my C drive. i know this because i went to My Computer looked at the amount of free disc space on my C drive. after doing the 5 or so restores, i've lost a total of about 6 GB of my C drive's free space. why is that happening? how do i get that space back?

Apr 5, 2003Windows XP uses a file called hiperfil.sys to save everything it needs when Windows XP goes into hibernation. If you are like me, and never use the hibernate function, you can turn it off. By turning hibernate off, Windows XP deletes the hiberfil.sys. This can free up the as much disk space as the amount of ram that you computer has.Go to Control Panel/Power Options/Hibernation and untick the box. It's as easy as that. Now you will have plenty more disk space to install those mega programs!

Apr 28, 2008I bought a computer years ago that had Windows XP Home preinstalled and of course, it didn't come with a Windows Setup CD. I'm finally at the point where I'd like to do a fresh install. I can't afford to pay my $6 cab fare let alone $100 or more on an OS I already own and everyone I know has Vista. Is there a way to get a free copy of the setup disk, maybe one that's already been used, directly from Microsoft if you can provide proof that you already own a legitimate copy of the OS so you can just use it for the installation part and put in your own license info? If not through Microsoft, what about from the manufacturer, have you known any of them to give you an option like that where they can send you a "dummy disc" or something just so you can reinstall? My PC was made by Systemax.
