I have a Compaq Presario SR1930NX, it previously belonged to my brother and when I recieved it it was a virus addled mess. Luckily, or so I thought, it had a recovery partition. The problem was I did not know how to use it.
In my searches I found this forum, and specifically this thread, http://tinyurl.com/26cud9k
Armed with this knowledge I went back to my computer and started it up. I tried both F10 and F11, I can't remember which but one did nothing and the other sent me to the standard BIOS menu that I could reach by hitting Esc. Is there some kind of BIOS update I need to run to fix this? Or am I just hosed and have to shell out money to try and get a recovery disc?

I tried connecting a new HP printer to my Compaq Presario 6400NX. After several sessions with HP tech support they decided the problem was with the OS and we tried to recover XP from the boot partition or from the hard drive. That failed so HP sent me the 5 CD recovery set and I tried recovering the system. During the recovery process several different messages popped up including, missing files, files that could not be recovered and cannot open database. During another session with HP tech support we erased the hard drive and tried again. They decided the CDs that they sent were defective so they sent me another set. Again I tried to do the recovery and I once again got the same "error" messages and eventually the recovery failed after the system rebooted. After several hours it gives an error message that the recovery failed.

I'm running Windows XP SP3 with everything up to date as far as I know. I have the complete set of my PC's OEM Disks that I've used once when my OS was completely messed up, had Geeks Rescue out and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I know what they are for. What I'm not understanding are the several tools I'm afraid to open listed in my "Start"/"All Programs" I have both "Compaq"/"Compaq Presario PC Tools" with "Compaq Application Recovery"/"Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator"/"Compaq Recovery Tools CD"/"Compaq Support Information"/"Compaq System Recovery"/"Remote Assistance"/"Safety and Comfort Guide"

Compaq will not start. It gets to the welcome screen, where you press F1 for Setup F10 for System recovery, but nothing else is happening. I have tried to get into both Set up and recovery with no results. I have also tried safe mode, but nothing happens.

Recently, my computer had been running rather different than normal, and I felt that something disastrous was going to happen soon, but I took the stupid route of simply doing nothing and excusing my hunch as nothing more than the computer being old. Pompeii 2 decided to take place on my computer. My "hunch" was very correct, as yesterday, multiple trojan downloaders showed their ugly faces, and placed nearly every virus known to man on my desktop. I then proceeded to but windows in safe mode, unplug the ethernet cable, and run Trojan Remover with the latest updates. Well Trojan Remover did quite a little number on my comp, disabled svchost's from running, and made it impossible for me to connect to the internet. After rebooting again, Windows was unable to boot and a box popped up stating that lsass.exe could not be found. I then booted into Compaq System Recovery and performed a "Safe" recovery that doesn't delete data but restores everything else.

Umm yea I am normally decent with pcs but recently after I let my friend use it for the weekend there are things wrong such as. Speed Slowed, Some AV software saying 146 infections. I dont know how to explain the problem.
But When I go to use it now it just ignores my pressing. Im kinda getting pissed since no recovery CDs. It is Windows XP Home Edition says on sticker. Is it possible to boot the D: drive (The recovery partition) with command prompt. Or am I screwed since it just ignores me pressing f10.

I am only moderately technically savvy. I'm not afraid of technology, but my only experience is tinkering around with my own PC's over the years when issues have come up. I'm a big fan of trying to do things yourself before calling in the professionals. However because of this, I have been delegated to complete the task at hand. This is my nephew's computer that has been dropped off at my house to somehow get running again.

I have each a Compaq Presario M2000 laptop computer, running Windows XP, 40 GB hard drive, 256 Mg memory, DVD CDRW, they're very nice and for whatever reason his quit working. He said that one day he went to turn on the computer and it wouldn't fire up. I told him to come over to my house and I swapted my battery and still nothing. I then swapped power packs with no fix. I thought it might be a power supply problem or something like that but have not figured out how to open it up without breaking something.

My laptop, (compaq presario v3000), won't load xp, if i tap f8, sometimes it will go to the screen where you can pick safe mode but it won't let me go to safe mode. sometimes it will go to desktop but when i try to play a game it restarts & frezes up again. I also have tried system restore, it takes me as far as choose your restore point & then it does nothing, just frezes there. I also have a d drive so i can restore it to manufactuary, when I first purchased my laptop. i don't know how to do this either. I'd rather not loose everything if possible.

I am having a difficult time location 2k drivers for this machine. I go to HP/Compaq and the only drivers they have available are for XP, does anyone have any experience with a 2k migration on these machines?

I want to perform a Windows repair on a Compaq Presario desktop computer but the person doesn't have an OS CD. I think what Compaq does is put the setup files for windows on a seperate partition so you install it using their recovery console. However, if you do this then it reformats the hard drive no matter what. This is NOT what I want to do. So my question is, if I can get my hands on a Windows XP Home full install CD (The computer came with Home) and enter in the CD key that came on the side of the Compaq, will it work correctly?

I have a Compaq Presario s6500nx that we have put win2k and I have installed drivers that HP provided (after I had to beg and request the win2k drivers from them) I have installed them and the onboard NIC does not work, it stopped working a while back. I have disabled the onboard lan. I installed a US Robtics Model 7900 10/100 NIC and installed all the drivers. I am having a problem with the computer getting an IP address. the network is set up with a DHCP server and it works fine because I never have this problem with any other computer. When I run ipconfig /renew I get the following Error: Windows 2000 IP Configuration
The folling error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection:

After lots of installs, uninstalls, and other acquired crap after quite a few years of use, I'm planning on reformatting my computer (specs are in profile).I have a few simple questions which I hope you can answer. First, I have a single hard-drive that is split in two partitions: C: and D:. The D: has always been locked down as a "recovery" drive. Can I just reformat my computer from the D:?If not, a few years ago, I made a set of recovery disks using the recovery creator. I am unsure on this, but when I made the recovery disks, will it restore my computer to the point when I created them (hope not), or will it completely reformat everything (what I'm hoping for).I plan on doing a "destructive," clean install in order to completely reformat my computer to stock specifications.Lastly, can I upgrade straight from SP1 to SP3? Or do you recommend that I use something like Project Dakota (or RyanVM) to bring me up to spiff with SP2, then make the final jump to SP3?

The laptop made some subtle clicking noises and would eventually crash after being on for 30 mins+. I noticed that avast didn't load during start up and when I scheduled a boot time scan, it wouldn't run. I decided to re-install Windows (XP SP3). I deleted everything on the drive and did a quick format. About half way through the installation process, I received a black screen that there is a "hard error." I tried again and received a blue screen that says Setup can't format the partition and that the drive may be damaged.I suspect it's a dead hard drive that's causing the problems...I was just hoping someone could confirm this. My uncle wants to keep the laptop and is willing to buy a new hard drive.but will it work? Also, I was able to access the bios and do the HDD self test and it checked out ok, which I thought was weird. Do I need to do the longer version?

I have just installed Windows XP and am trying to connect to a network via Ethernet on a Compaq Presario SR5130NX.I have green lights on the network cable and when I boot into Ubuntu (Linux), the network works fine. In Windows XP, when I go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Set up a home or small office network, I get a message: "The wizard cannot find your network hardware." Under Device Manager, there is nothing to do with network components, so I'm pretty sure that I need drivers.
