compaq computer has bit the dust and I'm building her a new one. Her original 20GB harddrive won't boot up in the new system....it gets to where the XP colored window flashes, goes to a blue screen of death screen, but that blinks out so quickly that I can't read it or pause it, and the computer reboots itself. It won't boot into safemode either. thought the harddrive was dead since I could hear it click at that point

Recently took some hits on my Compaq Presario 7478 system. Got two or three nasties via the 'Net. After McAfee's virus scan and removal, began experiencing weird happenings, such as system closing down and restarting. Then just not starting. Tried a few remedies [probably inadvisedly], and finally the system seemed to hang on my restore at the same place repeatedly.Ultimately the system could no longer establish my OS. Restore failed.
Bottom line: Could not invoke computer restore. Could do nothing with this computer.Q... Being compaq is the BIOS set to a certain condition that would prevent my reformatting the hard drive and restablishing an OS? Is this an option I can override? If I were to piggy-back the existing hard drive onto an operating hard-drive and reformat would that solve this problem and permit me to then create or repair the hard drive subsequently to get my compaq back?
When I turn on my computer, it starts up like it's supposed to. Then, when it comes to the Windows XP loading page (you know, the one with the bar scrolling underneath it), it suddenly goes to a Blue Screen of Death for a straight millisecond, then reboots again. Then my computer gives me 5 options. I could load Windows at the previous settings that worked, load Windows normally, and there were three other options that involved loading Windows in safe mode. I've tried all five. All five result in the computer rebooting itself again. There was a timer below for 20 seconds for me to choose an option, so I doubt that it's a worm causing this problem.My antivirus is up-to-date and I do regular scans. I have a firewall.
It couldn't have been a power surge, because I have a power strip on the computer, and it says that it's protected. And, before all of this was happening (a few minutes before), my computer was acting normally. There wasn't anything funky going on, so I doubt that my hard drive was dead.
I want to wipe the harddrive of my HP Pavilion desktop and start from scratch. However, I have moved since I purchased it many years ago and I don't have any of the original disks.Is there any way to access a function in the harddrive to wipe what's there and just re-install what it came with at purchase? And will it be able to connect to the internet to get drivers, etc.? Sorry if this is a question that has been asked before... I am semi-literate when it comes to computers but I have never done a complete reinstall without the original disks that came with the system.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a sony vaio pcv-rx550 desktop that had a corrupt hard drive.It would not let me do a system recovery or system restore, so I wiped the hard drive with dariks boot and nuke,and ordered a new set of restore disks for my specific brand and model, but when i put the first disk in-it says ERROR: this recovery cd is not for your computer.I checked the dir. using a win98 setup disk and there is a sony folder and a image folder but I do not know the correct command to get them to load that way. any help would be appreciated.Can I use a regular win xp home disk to get it up and running and then use the disks to load the remaing software that came with it off of the restore disks?It had win xp home on it to begin with.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIm intrested in purchasing a product to clone hard disks in Windows but I have a question before hand If I clone a hard disk into some DVD´s and the I want to restore that image into another hard disk, a new, different size/brand hard disk. Is that possible? Is there a "correct" way to do it? Someone reccomendme either Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image, but Im not sure if itll help me. I hope your answers help me to decide weather to buy the software.

Instead, I just get a red screen with ERROR and says to contact Compaq for support. I'm assuming something is "missing" that allows the Quick Restore to be "ok" with loading. I've formatted the Hard Drive.

View 8 Replies View Relatedwhen a memory failure corrupted the OS. Compaq runs its setup from a special partition on the HD and Ive reloaded all of that from floppies. Setup says I have a 26.2GB HD but it is 60GB, otherwise all tests pass. In setup under storage the help file says I can select the boot sequence but I cant seem to find anyway to do this?? Id like to boot from the Win 2000 CD, I did make a boot floppy set from the 2000 CD but it dies on disk2 with a "isapnp.sys corrupt". Downloaded another makeboot.exe diskette set and get the same message. The original OS starts to load off the HD but stops with an error message and only allows a reboot. Can I move this HD to a slave on an XP system and load 2000 that way and then move back and configure the different hardware? Or just boot from the CD on my other PC and install

When I started the restore it was just shutting off on me. I gave up and bought a new computer. Well just a few days ago a good friend of mine passed away, and his family wants pictures that I had on this computer. Went to start it up and see if it would turn on. View 9 Replies View RelatedI decided to install an old hard drive from one of my computers that is no longer used into my aging desktop. I've always dual booted with Linux, and decided that with the extra space, I was going to put Linux into the "new" drive, and reinstall Windows on the old primary drive. Both are IDE, and the following problem occurs whether just the Windows drive is plugged in, or if both disk are hooked up: I have a Compaq SR1620NX. I've only added extra RAM, a TV Tuner, and the extra hard drive When I put in the Compaq restore CD's, you first boot from the CD's, in order to copy the files first (which are the first 50% of the install), then the computer reboots into XP, and continues the installation process (Mostly Drivers, Crapware, and the license key). I've done this process once or twice before, and it worked flawlessly, this time it keeps freezing.
Once the computer boots into XP, I'm prompted to insert the final recovery disk. A few files are copied over, and the computer reboots. Once the computer reboots, the same screen pops up, and continues the installation (as it's suppose to). After a minute or two after the reboot, the computer locks up completely. I've waited quite awhile, yet nothing happens. Although it's against what the screen says, I hold the power button in, and let the computer reboot. Again, the installation screen pops up, but nothing happens
I'm a little lacking in memory, so I think this one has hit the bit bucket on me. I use to do alot of Compaq service and know there is a way to force the quick restore to go in on a new hard drive with a keystroke combination while its starting up, but for the life of me can't remember the what the keystroke combination is.

PC runs on Windows Xp SP2. It has 2 hard drives where the biggest one is paritioned into three drives: one for Windows installation, second was used for installation files of other programs (I kept Program Files folder there) and the alst one was dedicated for data storage. So the problem occured with the second drive. and as a result i do not have most of my programs running.
I have a compaq computer and have a problem with the restore cd from compaq. I needed to reformat the hard drive because of some crup files. When I put the restore cd in the computer is says the cd's are not for this compaq. I taked to compaq and gave them all the information they ask for and was told that I had the correct cd and it must be a bad cd set. They had me order a new set of cd's from there online store which I did with the part number they gave me after I double checked the number to see if they were correct and I got them in yesterday and still had the same problem. I talked to hp again last night and was told that the mother board most likely needed to be tatoo to match the cd's. I was told to take it to one of there repair stores to have this done. Never heard of a mother board changing it's self.

I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:

I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

This morning, it was making a horrible noise (I left it on overnight and couldn't hear the noise until I went into my office). It sounded like a fan or spinning noise of some kind, but also might have been an audio file that was stuck repeating the first tenth of a second of the track. In any event, the monitor was dark and the PC was totally nonresponsive. I did a hard reboot and since then, the PC has not worked. The power button does turn it on and I can hear the HDD spinning and the DVD/CD drive looking for a disc (and it will accept/eject discs) but the screen never comes on and the PC doesn't seem to boot up. I don't ever hear the Windows welcome .wav file.
how should i fix the problem?
