I have an interesting problem that shouldn't be too hard for you guys.I have three external hard-disks connected through a USB-HUB with my WinXP computer.Never had any problems whatsoever. The other day (that is, today) one of the disks didn't show up in 'My Computer'.So I did a right-click on my-computer-->manage-->disk management, like we all would do if a disk doesn't show up.The bar was there but it sayd 'Unallocated' or something like that if I recall.Basicly, it didn't have a drive letter assigned to it wich is pretty weird. Through some magic (that I don't quite remember), I got a drive letter assigned to it.It shows up in 'My Computer', so problem solved is what I thought Not even close.

I currently have 2 x 250GB hard drives; the first with XP and Vista on separate partitions, and the second for data/media. Is it safe to restore an OS disk image without removing the partitions i.e. restoring an XP disk image back to its original partition whilst keeping the Vista partition intact. I'm trying to find a safe/efficient way of backing up my OS's by saving disk images to an external hard drive, so if something goes wrong, ie doesn't boot, I can restore an image via the other OS.

I have a problem with understanding the differences between these words (actions), when I use Retrospect,( a backup program,) I cannot read any files since the backup file turns into a huge something. When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

I want to take an Image of the entire Hard Disk and make a CD of it. When this CD is put on a brand new computer, it should, without human intervention recreate the same Hard Disk info including partitions, OS, and any software that was installed such as, Antivirus, Databases, programming environments( C, Turbo C++, .NET , Java etc.). Now, I know that there are softwares that help in taking such an Image of the Hard Disk. What I want is info on
1. which one is best?
2. whether it is available for free?(doesn't matter whether it is a trial version.)
3. if I download it from the net will it work?

New HDD-Disk Managment -Drive size is displayed as less?Evening Guys, Just after a bit of help from you.Just been out and purchased a 250GB PATA HHD to use as a slave.Fitted the new drive as normal and booted the PC.Located the drive in Disk Management, Right clicked the DISK 0 which was the new unallocated drive, and clicked initialize, The drive is showing as 31.49GB Unallocated, As the drive has not been formatted as yet i thought this would be the reason why, Right clicked the 31.49GB Unallocated, selected new partition and the "wizard" will only allow a maximum of 31GB drive partition. As this is a 250 gb drive, i need this to be larger, ideally 250 GB before format. Please can you advise how i go about formatting the drive and increasing the size?

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard disks or hard drive controllers.Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I'm not completely computer illiterate but i have never set-up a dual or triboot system before.I want to triboot XP Pro, Vista Home Premium and Ubuntu. I have a brand new 500GB SATA hard drive which is straight out of the box. I don't have vista yet but plan on getting it soon (when the next service pack is released) and don't want to have to reformat my hard drive when i do. So i thought it would be better to prepare for it now

Have attempted to install a brand new & legal copy of XP Pro as well as the pc's (Compaq Evo N620C) original restore disk (W2000) on a brand new Seagate 60GB ATA hard drive and I get one of two responses along with a failed installation.I do have an old copy of Windows 98se that appears to be recognized by the pc and probably could be installed, but I would rather not. I started it up just enough to determine whether or not the pc and hdd would recognize the program, and it did....can anyone suggest what I am dealing with here and what can be done to get one of thes programs up and running, preferably the XP?

I have an external hard drive that I have assigned it a permanent hard drive letter reference through Disk Management. I have set the System Restore tab in My Computer Properties tab to not moniter this external hard drive K. Problem is that every now and then when I plug in every now and then for backing up my files via Briefcase - this will activate the System Restore function on that hard drive. This usually happens when I have the hard drive plugged in when I either turn off or turn on my computer. I stopped having the hard drive plugged in to hopefully stop the stop the System Restore on that hard drive (and then re-checked the System Restore tab)

Her original 20GB harddrive won't boot up in the new system....it gets to where the XP colored window flashes, goes to a blue screen of death screen, but that blinks out so quickly that I can't read it or pause it, and the computer reboots itself. It won't boot into safemode either. thought the harddrive was dead since I could hear it click at that point

Just want to upgrade from an 80 gig hard drive to something in the 250-500 gig range, and I would like to clone my existing drive with operating system directly to the new drive. Is it possible with freeware? I'll then format the old drive and use it as the slave.

A friend asked me to send him a copy of a photo I had taken which I did he the complained that it was too big and that I should resize it how I asked so he told me, go to my pictures right click on an image select mail recipient and a panel will appear offering to resize the image for emailing. This is where the fun begins not for me I said so I investigate a bit and find this powertoys programe download it ( I have reinstalled this prog more times this week than you've had hot dinners) I have tried any number of so called fixes that I have found on other forums it just don't work, in fact the image resizor option your supposed to have when you right click on an image which should create a resized clone in the same folder dosn't work either to add insult to injury my friend wondered why I had to right click on the image anyway as for him all he has to do is hover the mouse icon over the image and the panel appears. Ideas needed.

Bought a new barebones PC and want to transfer my old hard disk with XP pro on it to the new machine.Back in the good old / bad old days of Win98 etc, it was easy to do this as Windows saw IDE as IDE and made no other requests to the system to fine tune, AFAIR.Now though if I transfer the drive I get a reboot, safe mode does the same.I can furnish more info from the boot log if required later but does anyone have a sure fire way of getting the GUI up and running so that it can start updating drivers etc.I'm also transferring the cdrom, dvdrw and most importantly the AGP graphics card so it's not an issue with that

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share.

I use Windows XP Professional OS on an Intel Pentium 4 PC with 512 MB RAM. Presently I have a single disk drive of 40 MB which has been divided into three logical drives C, D and E with total sizes of 20, 10 and 10 MB respectively.
I now want to add a second disk of 80 MB capacity and would like to increase the total size of the three existing logical drives to 40 MB each.Is there a feature available in Windows XP that will permit me to do this without having to reformat the existing 40 MB disk drive ?I have certain software installed in the PC for which the setup files are not available. Reformatting the existing disk drive will result in the loss of these applications. I would also not like to add more logical drives i.e. F, G, H etc.

I have two computers running WinXP; the others run Win2K. When I attempt to see the file system in Explorer of one of the WinXP machines by clicking on "Computers Near Me"/Computer Name, it takes about a minute for the list of logical hard disks to appear. This is true no matter which of the other computers this one is accessed from. No other computer behaves like this. When I click on another computer name in Explorer, the list of hard disks appears almost instantaneously. Moreover, only one installation of WinXP behaves like this -- the one with a clean install of WinXP; the WinXP installation that is an upgrade of Win2K displays its logical hard disks very quickly. Once the list of logical disks appears, clicking on one entry produces a list of the folders in the root directory almost instantaneously.

If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

I have been in the recovery console, I have tried making a winpe boot disk "Failed due to errors" tried fixing the MBR, even tried to connect to it remote with regedit to make some changes in the registry with out success. I have even installed another copy of win xp on another drive and booted the system up with the 250gig in it and changed the drive letter in there. After taking the one drive out and booting with the 250gig it still has a letter of "C:" and still the same login loop.

I recently purchased a 160 GB SimpleTech SimpleDrive (external-USB) for backup purposes. The enclosed software StorageSync (Pro) did a satisfactory job of backing up, although a little slow (1 hr - 40 min for 11.5 GB, no compression).
Neither the on-line manual or website gives information whether a restore is possible from a catastrophic-type incident of the O/S, requiring restoration from a bootup procedure. There's no instruction about preparing a "Recovery CD." I have Ghost 9.0; would this be more advisable to backup the image file; and would Ghost see the external HD from its Recovery CD?

I was wondering if there is a good way to store a disk image of a hard drive either within that drive or on a server and have it overwrite the booting drive on every boot? I work at schools with computer labs and sometimes the kids mess up the computers and we have to run a Ghost Multicast session to wipe the drive. But everyone has been asking me for a way to wipe the computers clean on each boot? File loss is not an issue, as kids save their work to thumbdrives and network shared folders.
