Backup-- Restore - Copy - Burn - Image A Disk

Sep 28, 2006

I have a problem with understanding the differences between these words (actions), when I use Retrospect,( a backup program,) I cannot read any files since the backup file turns into a huge something. When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

Burn Iso Image To DVD+R Disk Using NERO 7.0 Ultra Edition

I am trying to burn an iso image to a DVD+R disk using NERO 7.0 Ultra Edition and for some reason when I go to burn the image, it tells me I need a CD-R or CD-RW. I just bought some DVD disks for the first time yesterday. I have used regular 800Mb CDs to burn iso images before with no problem. What's the deal with the DVD iso burning?

How To Test New Full Image Backup Program?

Is there a way to use my new recovery CD to boot to my slave partition to see if the puter will boot and to see if the "full image" really is a full image?

How To Make Bootable Self Installing Backup Image?

Mar 11, 2009

I have been searching the internet for an answer to my question and unable to do so. What I want to do is make a bootable backup image that will self install without windows in case of an operating system failure where windows is unavailable. I want to image my C drive and make it so I can boot from CDR or DVDR and have it format the drive and reinstall my backup identical to the original. A long time ago I saw this done with Symantec Ghost on a job I was on but have no idea how to accomplish the task myself. I was wondering if there is perhaps a better software out there now for making a total self restoring image of your haed drive such as this.

Backup Copy To Disk Of An Installed The Same As Original Install Disk?

Jul 18, 2008

I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

How To Take Image Of The Entire Hard Disk

Aug 4, 2008

I want to take an Image of the entire Hard Disk and make a CD of it. When this CD is put on a brand new computer, it should, without human intervention recreate the same Hard Disk info including partitions, OS, and any software that was installed such as, Antivirus, Databases, programming environments( C, Turbo C++, .NET , Java etc.). Now, I know that there are softwares that help in taking such an Image of the Hard Disk. What I want is info on

1. which one is best?
2. whether it is available for free?(doesn't matter whether it is a trial version.)
3. if I download it from the net will it work?

New Disk Image Pulled On Boot?

Jan 19, 2007

I was wondering if there is a good way to store a disk image of a hard drive either within that drive or on a server and have it overwrite the booting drive on every boot? I work at schools with computer labs and sometimes the kids mess up the computers and we have to run a Ghost Multicast session to wipe the drive. But everyone has been asking me for a way to wipe the computers clean on each boot? File loss is not an issue, as kids save their work to thumbdrives and network shared folders.

Disk Image Restore With Dual Boot

Feb 1, 2008

I currently have 2 x 250GB hard drives; the first with XP and Vista on separate partitions, and the second for data/media. Is it safe to restore an OS disk image without removing the partitions i.e. restoring an XP disk image back to its original partition whilst keeping the Vista partition intact. I'm trying to find a safe/efficient way of backing up my OS's by saving disk images to an external hard drive, so if something goes wrong, ie doesn't boot, I can restore an image via the other OS.

Disk Image - Virtual Loop Of Resetting Itself

Sep 11, 2005

I have some kind of puter glitch in that when I restarted my desktop, it now goes into a virtual loop of resetting itself. I have taken out the master drive, put it into another PC, and ran diagnostics/virus scans/worm checks/etc., all coming up negative. But no matter what I've done (won't go into safe mode, won't do last known configuration, etc.) it still resets itself. I've now started the task of taking off all of my files & data so I can send the PC back to be fixed (unless someone has a good idea of what to try next). My concern lies in the registry/win.ini files that "tell" the PC how I want/have my files & programs. If I make a disk image of the drive, will that "reset" my settings when my PC is returned? I don't want to have to reinstall everything and redo all my settings, etc. (I-Tunes, MS Office, etc.). Or will that potentially cause it to have the same problem over again?

How To Access Protected File In Mounted Disk Image

Sep 21, 2005

I protected my personal files in WXP and made an Acronis true image of the disk. After a disk crash, I rebuilt a new disk instead of using the image but want to get to my personal files by using the Acronis image mount utility. The tool works pretty well, the image looks like drive "G" when mounted and I can see all of my files, except for the personal ones. My new WXP load has the same user name, password, and computer name as the old one did. However, the NTFS security will not let me see or take ownership of my personal files. I dont want to have to restore the old image just to get my files but will if I have to. Any ideas for an easier way?

Large Directory To A Backup Drive - Disk Size

The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match. On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Should I be concerned that the copy was not completed correctly?

Partitioned Drive - Disk Cleanup File Backup Instead Of System

Jul 10, 2005

I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just, well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.

I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)

He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? Backup Software Which Will Backup Just The Changed Elements Of The Past File

Jun 22, 2005

I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
