Create A Backup Disk Before Start Using Computer?
Mar 14, 2010i just had my satellite fixed and i want to create a disk to backup everything that i have on my computer.it has only the things that came with the computer on it."fresh installation" and i need to know what kind of disk, and how do i know exactly what to back-up? never backed up anything before.do i use a dvd disk? and if i use a regular cd-r will it fit everything on one disk ?

Sep 27, 2007When I purchased my lap top from Dell 2.5 years ago I made a backup OS CD. The computer did not come with the xp disc. I need to re-install the OS now-computer is slow, sluggish and just acting down right weird. I know its time, so as I gathered up the gutts to do this but when I popped in the cd and began the process it asked for the key number. I dont have that because I made the disc. I just followed the directions when I bought the computer. Now what do i do? I would rather purchase and upgrade to vista but when I ran the program to see if I could, there were some issues, plus its getting old and needs more memory, ram etc. Sooo this is the next best thing untill I breakdown and get a new PC.

Is there any way to make a backup copy of Windows XP in the event that I ever need to reinstall it for her? Sep 28, 2007I have just done a fresh install of XP Home on one of my computers and had quite a bit of trouble getting some drivers. Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Any suggestions on how I should go about it and what software, free would be nice, that will allow me to do this? I hope I made myself clear as to my intentions.

Jul 10, 2005I recently sent my computer for repair due to virus-related problems. Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just,well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
Make Operating System Disk
Aug 8, 2009Is it possible to make a Windows XP Install CD that would have all drivers already installed? I have seen this feature on some notebooks like Fujitsu Siemens and Sony VAIO, they had all the drivers preinstalled. Is there a way to make such CDs my self.

Jun 15, 2006I tried to install a operating system disk xp pro which was supposed to be an unnattended install, but I wish I had attended now, I dont know what its done but when I came back it had a message 'setup cannot copy the file irmk7w2k to skip this file press escape to quit setup press f3 to retry press enter' I decided to quit setup and run my own os disk again I have used this disk plenty of times but this time it came up with the same message that I got on the other disk. So I thought something had been left on the harddrive so I put my wipe clean cd in to clean the hard drive and then I formatted and I was still getting the same message on setup. How can this be happening and how do I fix it? Thanks. I have an os on now but it is corrupted and I cannot get online there are plenty of files missing because I pressed skip this file plenty of times just to get some sort of operating system on. I really need help I am typing this on another pc.

Aug 30, 2005Currently i have 2 hard drives, a 40gb and a 160gb. I have winxp on the 40 bg (single c: partition) as well as some files, and data and music on the 160 gb (about 50 or so gb full one partition-F. I want to take the F drive, the bigger one, and put it in my new computer. also, i want to install winxp PRO on the F: drive. so,can i add another partition on there now (so i dont lose files- i have insufficient room to backup F to C) and install xp pro, can i move the harddrive later and install xppro? basically, i want to lose no data and am unsure i have enough room to backup F, is there a way or program i can use to add a nother partition to an already formatted disk,what is the best way to do this?

Jan 6, 2005I opened Disk Cleanup and chose More Options. I clicked on Windows Components and decided that everything on the list was just fine. I clicked Next and I guess I should have clicked Cancel. The box said it was deleting files, etc and I wondered why, when I hadn't checked anything and all the boxes were unchecked. Anyway, I then went to System Restore and created a restore point so I could do the cleaning up of my System Restore. I am so mad at myself because I know I should've created a system restore point prior to doing any of the Disk cleanup!!!
