I'm having problems with my window XP opening. I have taken my hard drive out and put in an enclosure, and backed it up. Now I'm trying to determine the product key to reinstall it with the rescue disk.
View 7 RepliesI am attempting to get into my Dell Dimension 8400. It may be I am having problems due to the SP3 update but I cannot get in to see if it is there and uninstall it. (It started going to the blue screen and I cannot do anything from any of the safe mode screens...they are just black with "safemode" in all 4 corners.) I have read up on the SP3 problems on the microsoft forums and found instruction on how to take care of it. It starts with the Recovery Console and the XPCD.
I get in there and it goes directly to "Setup loading files". When it tries to start windows I get this message: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to our computer, and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or set up program. Setup cannot continue. To quit
Rescue disk for Gateway laptop, A friend has a laptop thats about 18 months old and had a HD crash.He can't find his rescue disk. Anyone know what the Gateway policy is on getting a CD?

View 6 Replies View Related1) this pblm started after i did a reinstall of windows some time back. my system works fine now but for one thing. at every boot after its done post, the screen goes blank/dark/black for about 40 seconds, then a white progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen and only then does the windows logo with the blue progress bar appears. from then on its smooth sailing, a few seconds till the welcome screen and i'm in windows.2) this hasn't happen for a few weeks now. sometimes while in windows the pc reboots by itself but during post it wont recognize the hd. like nothing connected to the ide cable. fixed it by disconnecting/reconnecting the ide cable

I've been having some major problems with my computer as of late and I'd just love to wipe the whole darn thing clean and reinstall everything, but I'm not sure if that's even an option if I don't have a disc. How difficult is the process of uninstalling XP on my old PC and reinstalling that same copy on my new one? I want to wait until the first service pack of Vista is out before upgrading. I've heard reinstalling XP on a new PC can cause problems but I don't see how it would if it's no longer on my old PC.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI started to reformat an old laptop and made it through disc one of my recovery discs. I'm guessing one of my cats knocked the power cord out of the computer. The battery died before disc two could finish. Now when I turn it on it says it can't find the operating system. It was working perfectly fine prior to this, just really slow, and I can see the hard drive is still there through BIOS.

This computer has been starting up fine but if i walk away I comp back to :1962 no operating system found. Press f1 to repeat boot sequence and when I do that I get a weird graph and more errors. I've been thinking about reformating the HD and reinstalling XP Pro. 2 questions: 1st is; if I back up my HD and then do a restore after reinstalling the os, won't I just restore the glitches I'm trying to get rid of? 2nd question; Since I've never done a reinstall and restore; will all my programs be restored just as if they have been installed (Drivers, programs, etc.); or do I have to reinstall all my programs and then do a restore so I get all the data that changed after they were installed?

This HDD had XP on a 50GB Partition, and Linux on a 30GB Partition, installed so I can choose between either operating system with Grub when I boot up. Well, I didn't want Linux anymore, so I used Norton Partition Magic to delete the Linux partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB loads and it just says 'unknown filesystem' and then 'GRUB rescue'.Obviously I didn't realize the GRUB started with Linux first, so now I'm screwed and can't boot.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to install a operating system disk xp pro which was supposed to be an unnattended install, but I wish I had attended now, I dont know what its done but when I came back it had a message 'setup cannot copy the file irmk7w2k to skip this file press escape to quit setup press f3 to retry press enter' I decided to quit setup and run my own os disk again I have used this disk plenty of times but this time it came up with the same message that I got on the other disk. So I thought something had been left on the harddrive so I put my wipe clean cd in to clean the hard drive and then I formatted and I was still getting the same message on setup. How can this be happening and how do I fix it? Thanks. I have an os on now but it is corrupted and I cannot get online there are plenty of files missing because I pressed skip this file plenty of times just to get some sort of operating system on. I really need help I am typing this on another pc.
