Tried to reinstall xp but screen froze at 'select operating system to start'. Now I just have a blank screen with a cursor flashing in the top left side. I tried to boot by pressing F11 but cannot do so either by the cd or the hdd.

The error stated that I should run Chkdsk and then proceeds to restart and bring me to the Windows boot selection screen (safe mode, last known good configuration, normally). No matter which choice I pick, it always leads to the BSOD then restarts. Since this is getting me nowhere fast, I want to just format and reinstall windows. I do not have my recovery CDs, and when I enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence I cannot change it so the CD drive is above the hard drive in priority. The reason it gives me in the bios is that "All items on this menu cannot be modified in user mode. If any items require changes, please consult your system supervisor. Any ideas on how I can boot off the cd and reinstall windows from scratch?

When I start up my laptop, the screen immediatly says Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem.You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great. I've looked in alot of websites about how to solve this problem but I can't find any solution to the problem without the cd. I can't bypass it by doing any of the F8 options. If it helps, I can access the Calpera DR DOS program.

View 6 Replies View Related1) this pblm started after i did a reinstall of windows some time back. my system works fine now but for one thing. at every boot after its done post, the screen goes blank/dark/black for about 40 seconds, then a white progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen and only then does the windows logo with the blue progress bar appears. from then on its smooth sailing, a few seconds till the welcome screen and i'm in windows.2) this hasn't happen for a few weeks now. sometimes while in windows the pc reboots by itself but during post it wont recognize the hd. like nothing connected to the ide cable. fixed it by disconnecting/reconnecting the ide cable

I didn't do anything before, like install anything,or unistall, or did any hardware changes. My computer now just stays on the screen where there are those bars that move near the bottom. Until just now, it never happened on my PC before but I've had it many times at the Internet Cafe. When it happened, I always pressed the 3 keys: Crl, Alt and Delete and the PC would turn-off and re-boot but with my PC, it refused to re-boot after pressing for a half-hour. It showed "Windows Task Manager" where the message kept appearing. "Application Error" which kept flashing endlessly. The cursor froze in the center of the screen intermittently an hourglass flashed-on. This continued for over 1 hour. What is a fast way to re-boot when the cursor freezes ? I've used iMacs for years at the Apple Store and I never had a "Frozen" screen. Is this just a Windows problem? Does the new Windows 7 also "crash"?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe computer I'm writing about is my sister's home-built PC, running XP Home Edition on an Nforce4-A939 motherboard. *May not be verbatim as Windows is installed in Swedish.She tells me that shortly prior to this happening, the computer was transported by car for about 20 minutes, after which she set it up, played Sims for about an hour, downloaded a couple of patches and switched it off (normally). She then restarted it a day later, left it on without using it for about an hour, then switched it off again (normally). When she booted it up again, the above error appeared. She only uses the computer for playing Sims.

I think the problem is related to an program/appliocation or server that catched a virus through it. I had the laptop fixed once from the shop and the problem still exist with continuing usage of the same applications/programs. After installing a game online for my son (from gametap) the game was running very slow and then just froze on the screen. I tried every way to shut the game off...couldn't...it was just stuck. I tried ctl-alt-delete expecting the task manager to appear....nothing... At that point I resorted to just shutting off the main switch. When I turned it back on a couple of minutes later it tried to start normally...then a blue screen comes up that says a 'problem has been detected and windows has been forced to shut down....etc'.. He had been asking me for a while to reinstall the operating system to get his sister's stuff off of it since she now has a laptop. The computer came with its own recovery system built in, so I did that first. The computer would run the recovery, and then would go to the black background "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen with a little 'please wait' under the windows logo flag, and when it would go to the next screen (which would presumably be the beginnings of the start-up area) it would get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left side. (You can't type anything with the cursor, however). So I got in an online chat with HP who said that it sounded like the recover partition had been corrupted and that if I had not made a set of recovery CDs then I needed to order them and run the recovery from the Cds. So I did just that yesterday. The same thing happens. I get to the first start-up screen (black background with Microsoft 'flag' and a 'please wait') and when it goes to the next screen it's a black background with a cursor in the upper left. What is wrong with this computer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Travelmate 4200 that got a drink spilled on it last night. It spilled all over the keyboard, so we took apart the top section of the keyboard to clean it out and dried it upside down last night to get any remaining liquid out.
Now the computer will not load. The green power light comes on and it acts like it is trying to read the DVD drive but then it does nothing. The fan comes on as well. But no screen or anything else.
I went to install a program last night thati have recieved of a friend(well i thought we were) and now i have lost use of a lot of functions and keep getting security messages pop up on my screen.
