my little bro wants me to but him a new hard drive for his laptop for his birthday. He does not have the windows xp disk that came with the machine. Is there I way I can put his current version of windows on a disk, or back it up some other way?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an old dell that had windows ME on it (yuck) About 3 years ago, I upgraded to XP and installed service pack 2. Since then I have set up 2 laptops, broadband and a wireless network. But the old dell in the office (the main one that the high speed modem and linksys is plugged into) needs to have the operating system re-installed again. It has reached its half life...a nuisance, a pain, unbearable, unusable! When I tried to re-install it wouldnt let me because the version on the computer is a newer version then the one on the disk.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to install a operating system disk xp pro which was supposed to be an unnattended install, but I wish I had attended now, I dont know what its done but when I came back it had a message 'setup cannot copy the file irmk7w2k to skip this file press escape to quit setup press f3 to retry press enter' I decided to quit setup and run my own os disk again I have used this disk plenty of times but this time it came up with the same message that I got on the other disk. So I thought something had been left on the harddrive so I put my wipe clean cd in to clean the hard drive and then I formatted and I was still getting the same message on setup. How can this be happening and how do I fix it? Thanks. I have an os on now but it is corrupted and I cannot get online there are plenty of files missing because I pressed skip this file plenty of times just to get some sort of operating system on. I really need help I am typing this on another pc.

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed
I used a �Boot CD� and got the following information:

I have winxp on the 40 bg (single c: partition) as well as some files, and data and music on the 160 gb (about 50 or so gb full one partition-F. I want to take the F drive, the bigger one, and put it in my new computer. also, i want to install winxp PRO on the F: drive. so,can i add another partition on there now (so i dont lose files- i have insufficient room to backup F to C) and install xp pro, can i move the harddrive later and install xppro? basically, i want to lose no data and am unsure i have enough room to backup F, is there a way or program i can use to add a nother partition to an already formatted disk,what is the best way to do this?

It's not "system idle proccess" just system.After installing right off the xp pro disk, all i did was install the updates up to and through SP2, my motherboard drivers, video drivers, winamp and AIM. Other than that, nothing else has been done, yet system is still using all free cpu.I checked to make sure all drivers were current.

I replaced the storage drive...this had been the "first" drive and was labeled c: while the one running XP was labeled d:I installed the new drive and rebooted. In the process, the volume labels flipped: the primary drive became c: and the storage drive becoming d: This has thrown Windows into a world of confusion and all previously installed programs show up as uninstalled. They are still there in "program files" but many of them refuse to open, reporting not being able to find .dll files which I can search for and find on the computer.
