Finding Discounted Version Of Operating System For Students?

i am a student at the university of leicester, england. ive heard there are discounted versions of windows xp proffesional upgrade available for students in higher education. where are the best places to obtain this from, as it is confusing finding the right product. and what does microsoft have to do with the studentoptions.com site which sells this as a download. im not sure if it is practical to download a copy of windows?

I recently bought a Canon PowerShot SD430 Digital ELPH Wireless for use in my chiropractic practice. It will be used in posture evaluation and I selected it for the wireless feature. After unsuccessfully trying to install it on my samsung laptop R710 AS04 I was informed by canon help that 'Windows XP (excluding the 64-bit version) with Service Pack 2 installed is required to use the wireless function.' while the samsung came with Vista pre-installed.
My question is this: I still have an old CD of XP Home Edition, it is version 2002 with a part number X08-26270.....how do I know if this is the 64 or 32 bit version? Will I have problems installing SP2 on such an old version or should I pop for a newer one? I'm determined to make the danged camera work wirelessly, any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I don't work for this company or know anyone who does; but, this is as good a price as I've seen for a non-OEM copy of Windows XP Pro. I ordered two copies today.If anyone knows of a cheaper price, post it here; but, this is as close to free as I've seen.http://cdsfu.com/index.php?categoryID=87

I recently purchased a second hand Toshiba Tecra 8000 Laptop which came with XP Pro installed on it. Everying works fine, it is just VERY VERY VERY slow. I am unsure what O/S this laptop was built for.Here are the specs:Intel Pentium II processor 160MHz, 128 MB of Ram 6GB Hard DriveI would like to know which O/S i should install on the laptop to speed it up.

How much space should I plan to partition for a new install of Windows XP pro? My current setup has 3 partitions on an 80GB drive. My system drive is about 5GB and I keep getting the low disk space message. Is 10GB enough or too much? I install all of my software and documents to another partition.

I'm in the market for a new desktop but don't like that I'm forced to have Vista as my OS in it. Seeing as how the selsction of (new) machines with XP is basically nonexistent, can I change the OS to XP with minimal trouble? After reading and hearing all the horror stories, I'd prefer to wait until Vista has all the bugs worked out before going that route.

i have toshiba m35x laptop with celeron m 1.4 GHz,512 mb ram (256 x 2), windows xp proff.few days back i installed a 256 mb ram to make it 512mb.but i didnot find any large difference.it take too long to start and shutdown windows.when i open task manager 39 processess were running. is it can be a prob. or it is something else. i check all the startup applications from msconfig but i did not get any extra program which i can disable.

What would be the procedure for me to change from Windows XP to Windows 2000? Does XP have to be uninstalled or can I install 2000 without that requirement? Someone told me that I could just install 2000 and, that, in effect, would override XP. But, I don't want to goof something up so I thought I had better check with the experts here first.

I have an old dell that had windows ME on it (yuck) About 3 years ago, I upgraded to XP and installed service pack 2. Since then I have set up 2 laptops, broadband and a wireless network. But the old dell in the office (the main one that the high speed modem and linksys is plugged into) needs to have the operating system re-installed again. It has reached its half life...a nuisance, a pain, unbearable, unusable! When I tried to re-install it wouldnt let me because the version on the computer is a newer version then the one on the disk.

I have upgraded to XP-Pro from 98se and a little estimating program I have used for years worked ok for a couple of weeks until today.I get this message when ever I try to open the program or reinstall the program.C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT.The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I inherited a great computer that is running SP1a. It has not been used in years but is running great. It has some great programs that cannot be replaced. I've heard SP3 is incompatible with a few programs and don't want to chance losing them. Also, since its an older system, I'd rather update 1 step at a time.
Where can I find service pack 2 being that Microsoft's site only links to SP3 (all SP2 links take you to an SP3 page)? I tried Download.com but only found SP3 and SP1a.

The requirements at UNC greensboro states that all students must use Micrsoft xp proffessional, 2000, or media center. So i went to stales this am to get the upgrade from xp home to pro and it was $199.00 (Just what I needed more expenses ). At checkout a manager asked me if it was for me and I said no my daughter`s laptop as UNCG requires he to havre the upgrade or they won`y let her connect when she gets there. She very quickly told me that schools can suggest but not reqire as it is against the law to require. She also told me that if they require it that they must reimburse me for the upgrade.

Our application using MSJVM suddenly stopped working on one of the computers. The user claims that the application worked well about a month ago and stopped after that. The precise time when it stopped workign is not knwoen. He does not recall running any Windows updates etc., after that. Is there any way we could use system restore or something like that to find the difference from the current configuration to the one about a month back?

I'm trying to fix my friends Hp and I usually know what im doing. But here I have no idea what to do. I tried going into the bios to change the boot order to cd to format and I can't. Can anyone tell me what to do.I changed out his hard drive with mine and it does nothing. just posts and goes to a black screen instead of trying to boot and blue screening as it usually do when you change hardrives between two computers.Changed the Ide cables no luck.

I'm struggeling to get an new "my own" version of XP installed to my old working laptop. My old working had anther XP installed, but I tried to remove it before installing my own. The problem is; while installing it comes with an error saying that the my version doesn't fit to the original version...how do I clean the laptop fully? I'm using a tool called fdisk, aefdisk, but probably not correct

I have bought in Hong Kong a Asus netbook, wrongly I was given one which hasnt been uploaded with the English support version.I cant read Chinese, so I cant get through to the stages of the Chinese windows xp menu to use the Asus xp support dvd version. But I need to know, at which stage I have to use the Asus xp support dvd version. a client of mine has a compaq desktop.windows was starting up and then blue screening (you know the one,run a anti virus scan uninstall any drivers She told me that she doesn't have up to date anti-virus...and that the system was warning her about a virus.I ran ERD commander (the windows live cd) and when it got to the menu there was no partition to work on...no windows found.i have since slaved it to my desktop and no drive was found.but when i go to disk
manager the space is there...disk 0 40GB healthy (looks no different to my os partition)but when i right click it and properties it says local disk file system

I am using Windows XP Home, on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1GB RAM. When I have been using the internet (Internet Explorer version 7) I occassionally experience a slowdown of everything internet related. I check the Tas Manager and it shows my System Idle Process using 99% of CPU. I find this odd, as my system is clearly not idle cause I am using it! My computer is on a network, and I havent heard it happening to other computers on the network until today, when the same thing occurred on another machine in the network. any ideas on what it is?
