I'm struggeling to get an new "my own" version of XP installed to my old working laptop. My old working had anther XP installed, but I tried to remove it before installing my own. The problem is; while installing it comes with an error saying that the my version doesn't fit to the original version...how do I clean the laptop fully? I'm using a tool called fdisk, aefdisk, but probably not correct

I have bought in Hong Kong a Asus netbook, wrongly I was given one which hasnt been uploaded with the English support version.I cant read Chinese, so I cant get through to the stages of the Chinese windows xp menu to use the Asus xp support dvd version. But I need to know, at which stage I have to use the Asus xp support dvd version. View 3 Replies View RelatedI understand that if I install an OEM version it will be a new installation (not an upgrade) and all data files and programs will be wiped clean as part of the installation (step one is formatting the hard drive). I'm okay with that, because I have files on other machines and reinstall any programs that I need My question is reference to drivers being deleted and needing to be reinstalled. I'm not as familiar on the driver issue. I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.) About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

The address bar and tab bar are displaying the correct favicon in IE7. I am certain the problem is associated with my laptop computer because my desktop computer, which never saw the old favicon, is displaying the correct favicon as a desktop shortcut. To make it short and sweet, if I right-click on any folders or on the hard drive icons in My Computer explorer.exe freezes. I have a program called HDDLife Pro (trial version) that says my hard disks are at 53% and 85%. The program measures the current tempurature and how much life is left on your hard disks. There are no tale-tell signs of a failing disk either.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI wrk for a company that has a server with Windows 2003. There are multiple 2000 and XP users who map drives from the server. Now here is where the problem begins. 2000 has no problms at all mapping drives. XP however has an issue with one folder. No matter what letter you pick, when you map the drive you get an error message "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure you are running setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102" First of all im not running any type of setup. Im merely mapping a drive. This error occurs regardless of what drive letter you pick. And the really weird part, is once mapped the drive will open in Explorer or any other mode EXCEPT through My Computer and double clicking on the drive. If you right click the drive and hit open or explore, both will open the drive just fine. You double click and you get the error. When you right click the drive you also get an "autoplay" feature which makes no sense being its a folder on the server.
It acts like it has lost its association. Like if a JPG file is associated with nothing it wont open, but if you tell it to open with paint then it will. Its really weird and after weeks of searching i have found not a single similar problem to this one i can relate or get help from. It just plain makes no sense. I am going to unshare and reshare the folder when everyone leaves and see if that helps, but it works fine in 2000 currently and not in XP just in my computer.
I recent had to install a new disk drive on my computer (Dell) and had problems installing Windows XP from their support CD so I used an illegal copy instead. Now I've been identified as having a non-genuine operating system and need desperately to get my legal copy installed. Do I use the Dell provided system CD and act as tho' I was repairing Windows? Will that get the correct key in place without losing all the other things installed on my drive?

The only problem is, however, that I don't have an XP cd, seeing as how I got it installed when I gave it to our computer tech to build my computer a while back. My CD key is for an oem version, which I'm guessing is what he used.
I am running XP SP2 with all patches installed. I was wondering if the free version of AVG antivirus will work with an OEM version of windows I am running? I thought I read it would not but I am not at all sure. I am currently running Norton but it will expire soon.

I went to Add/Remove and it is not there. I remember seeing it somewhere but can't recall if its the old Add/Remove on the other drive or I just happened to run into it. I went into Windows, Java, and it told me nothing about the version. Has a bunch of zipped files and don't want to open anything that I don't know about. I have 3 folders, classes, trustlib, and packages. Nothing shows what version, if its even installed. I know you need the new update for it, if its not installed now, is it needed?

Fine.The thing is, he installed a new instance of XP Professional instead of updating/repairing the one I had. Now I boot on a clean Windows that has no access to my apps. Sure, I can go to, say, the Photoshop dir and click on the exe, but it won't run since its dll's and stuff are all on the old Windows' installation.I have 175Gb of apps and data in the HDD and I don't want to wipe it, especially since I don't have the original CDs of many of my apps anymore. Plus there's years of downloaded stuff I don't want to search,download and fine-tune all over again.So, my question is, how can I kill this new version and fix my old one so it does work; make the new one work with all my apps so I can kill the old one; or in any way have ONE XP on my machine, that actually runs my apps, without having to reinstall them all (some I can't even if I wanted/had to)So I have a PC with TWO Windows in it and I can't use either for anything I need. Both are in the same partition, only the second one was installed in WINDOWS. All interested students sign a EULA and we were given a copy on cd with key code.Most of the other students used it to upgrade from prior os. I was told it is a full copy, so I allowed a clean install with it formating my hard drive to NTFS from the old fat32.Anyway, everytime I use Internet Explorer it gives error code " duplicate memory at line 945.

The description is as a "DSP" or "Commercial" version described as a version sold to big companies or was given away at a special programmers conference. These offers often include a copy of Office 2003 or Office XP that has the same features as the XP Pro.My question is this: Is there such a thing as the DSP or Commercial version of XP Pro SP2 and MS Office? If such a thing is real are the features being described correct (i.e. unlimited installs and upgrades allowed)? Why isn't this discussed more if it is real or, especially, if it is a scam?
