I've heard many bad things about vista but also many goods things. I can now get any version of it i wish and was wondering if it was primary-os good yet? Anyone with experience with using the latest's build's opinion would be much apreciated.
View 3 RepliesI stored family pictures on Windows 95 Zip disks and now use HP Pavilion dv 8380 Notebook PC with XP. I have installed an Iomega Zip 250 external USB port drive to open the old Zip discs and get a message that I need a Windows 95 program to do this. I don't want to mess up my current operating system, but want to move these files to my XP system.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am having an email conversation with Microsoft about some Windows Update issues. This is a very drawn out process as they take about three days between responses. Their last suggestion was for me to reinstall SP3. I asked them if I should remove my current version first. They haven't responded yet so I though I would throw it out here. Should I remove the current version or will it just be overwritten if i re-run the installation with their latest version?
View 9 Replies View RelatedComputer (sony-vaio desktop, turning 4 yrs old next month): Windows XP Home SP 2, IE7 and latest version of Firefox, Norton AntiVirus 2003 (I mention my AV software in case any of your solutions may conflict with it).My index.dat file under Content IE5 (which in turn is in the Temporary Internet Files folder) is bloated. I believe there are several Internet Explorer dat.files around besides the one mentioned. I ran ATF Cleaner, but it does not clean index.dat files. I was told NOT to run ccleaner, as it is said to be aggressive and can destroy computers. I do NOT want to do anything with the registry by the way, only clean out the index.dat files.
Since the index.dat files are protected by the systems, I can't get at them manually. I don't even know where the remaining index.dat files (ONLY for Internet Explorer) are located.
How can one know if his Personal Computer is having a pirated version of the Operating System installed?

I hate the folders / Graphics IE7 looks really bad. I hate all the graphics so far , It look like a cheap made of a old operating system and Whats with the name too "Vista"? M$$$ XP looks way better then Vista. Please I hope you change the way it looks before it get release.

Since then I have set up 2 laptops, broadband and a wireless network. But the old dell in the office (the main one that the high speed modem and linksys is plugged into) needs to have the operating system re-installed again. It has reached its half life...a nuisance, a pain, unbearable, unusable! When I tried to re-install it wouldnt let me because the version on the computer is a newer version then the one on the disk.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently partitioned my hard drive using Symantec Partition Magic. I installed Vista Ultimate on a separate partition. After installing, I would reboot and the normal dual boot menu would come up every time i booted my computer. But after realizing that I didn't like vista, I deleted the partition. I did not uninstall Vista, I just deleted the partition. Than I applied the newly unallocated space to the rest of my harddrive. But now when I boot, I still get the dual boot option. It tells me to pick Vista or an "Earlier Version of Windows".

The problem is that the XP CD is the original RTM version and my system has been updated to SP1 and SP2. The installation program wanted to install older versions of the files from the CD over the existing versions. I found some but not all the files I needed for the installation in the folder "Service Pack Files."Is there some way to create a CD that contains all the current system files that I need to repair XP SP2. Sort of a current snapshot. It would not have to be an installation disk, just a repair disk.It would be nice to be able to get a installation disk that is current without having to pay for a new full version of XP. After all these years my system is so garbaged up that dumping it and starting over is appealing. I do not want to start with my RTM and then run all the upgrades, it would take forever. Microsoft must realize that there are a lot of people with
the same problem. Perhaps someone could convince them to come up with a cleanup tool.

I tried going into the bios to change the boot order to cd to format and I can't. Can anyone tell me what to do.I changed out his hard drive with mine and it does nothing. just posts and goes to a black screen instead of trying to boot and blue screening as it usually do when you change hardrives between two computers.Changed the Ide cables no luck.

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

I am using Windows XP Home, on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1GB RAM. When I have been using the internet (Internet Explorer version 7) I occassionally experience a slowdown of everything internet related. I check the Tas Manager and it shows my System Idle Process using 99% of CPU. I find this odd, as my system is clearly not idle cause I am using it! My computer is on a network, and I havent heard it happening to other computers on the network until today, when the same thing occurred on another machine in the network. any ideas on what it is?
