i just had my satellite fixed and i want to create a disk to backup everything that i have on my computer.it has only the things that came with the computer on it."fresh installation" and i need to know what kind of disk, and how do i know exactly what to back-up? never backed up anything before.do i use a dvd disk? and if i use a regular cd-r will it fit everything on one disk ?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just done a fresh install of XP Home on one of my computers and had quite a bit of trouble getting some drivers. Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Any suggestions on how I should go about it and what software, free would be nice, that will allow me to do this? I hope I made myself clear as to my intentions.

One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?

I orginally bought the computer to surf and now I want start playing with it. I have windows 2000. I would like to copy some programs and I can't get the floppy disk A to work. What do I do next? View 11 Replies View RelatedI opened Disk Cleanup and chose More Options. I clicked on Windows Components and decided that everything on the list was just fine. I clicked Next and I guess I should have clicked Cancel. The box said it was deleting files, etc and I wondered why, when I hadn't checked anything and all the boxes were unchecked. Anyway, I then went to System Restore and created a restore point so I could do the cleaning up of my System Restore. I am so mad at myself because I know I should've created a system restore point prior to doing any of the Disk cleanup!!! When I had finished cleaning up with Disk Cleanup, I tried to copy some info from a newsletter, only to find out that my WordPad program was not available!!!! Where could I have lost this program, in Disk Cleanup???? I need help to find out how to get my Wordpad program back, since I can't use system restore.

When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.
I copied a large directory to a backup drive, preparing to replace the HD on which the directory currently exists.After copying, the "size" of source and target both match:7.14 GB (7,673,318,222 bytes). The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match.On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Should I be concerned that the copy was not completed correctly?

Anyway, the repair person had to reinstall Win XP(Home) from scratch and told me that he had partitioned the drive (and without my permission!) in two: DBackup and CSystem (Backup consists of the files from the previous system). I notice that there is a duplication of files due to this partition. For example, song A would appear twice on Win Media PlayerCDocumentsandSettings/Owner/My Documents/MyMusic/SongA AND Dmydocbackup/MyMusic/SongA). I don't know if there are any duplication of other files yet. Plus, I realised during Disk Cleanup that the system's Temporary Internet Files is located in 'Backup drive' instead of 'System'. Shouldn't this folder be in the other drive i.e. system drive, since Backup is just,well, backup(of the old drive). The WINDOWS folder also appears in both drives.
I've never had partitioned drives so this is causing major headaches for me. If there is a need for me to un-partition my drives to clear the mess, can I do it without re-installing the whole system from the Cd? Sorry it's a long one How many times can you reinstall from the Cd before it cannot be used anymore (I hear there is a limit)
everytime i shut down my comp, when i turn it on again i get an error message that says 'insert boot disk' on the startup screen. i'm not sure what the exact message was, but it was something about boot disk i should have written it down anyway, i turned the comp off, and shook the CPU a bit and then tried again and it started. I did a virus scan and every things clear l. i don't know much about these things lol so doing the virus scan must sound a little silly.so then anyway, i had to turn the computer off again and then when i switched it on i got the same error message. i pushed the off button and then put it on again and it worked. how do i prevent getting the error?

I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

The USB external is a 40GB hdd and only one partition. My question is: can I also back up the hdd in my new computer to the same hdd without causing any problem if and when I have to use it to restore either? computer's hdd contents? (I have also backed up the new PC hdd with Acronis.) BTW, the external hdd is more than adequate to accommodate both PC back ups; even with dual booting XP Pro and Win98SE on the old PC.I understand that Acronis will not burn to a DVD disk but instead the burn has to be saved somewhere (desktop?) and then copied to a DVD disk. .

I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
After doing a windows backup can you restore it to any computer or can it be installed only on the computer you backed up.
